Description
Fuel for internal combustion machines. It has already been proposed to add small amounts of ether to alcohol to make the latter more likely to be used in internal combustion machines.
The inventor has found that alcohol is only improved as a fuel for its use in ordinary types of automotive and aircraft carburettors by addition of ether, if the ether content reaches 40% by weight of the mixture. It is only from this content that an appreciable improvement is observed, an improvement which continues with the increase in the ether content,
until the ether content is found to be so great that the fuel comes to have the disadvantages which exist for the ether itself, namely too much volatility and price; this upper limit can be specified as corresponding to a content of 60% ether.
The fuel which is the object of the present invention is consequently a mixture of 60 to 40% alcohol and 40 to 600% ether. Although absolute alcohol is advantageous, it is not essential that the alcohol be so free from water and an alcohol rectified at 950/0 (670% P.) is satisfactory; even weaker alcohols can be used, but they are obviously not so beneficial.
Based on 95% alcohol and ether washed once, it can be read that after much testing it has been recognized that parts, equal by weight of alcohol and ether, roughly represent the best proportion, when using an ordinary petroleum carburetor.
The combustion of a fuel falling within the above definition is liable to cause corrosion of valves and cylinders in machinery. This can be avoided by adding a small amount of ammonia to the fuel, for example about 0.5%.
To make the new fuel unsuitable for people to. depraved taste; it may be added with a denaturing agent, such as for example 0.5 "; o of pyridine and <B> 0.5 '</B>, o of crude oil freed from pitch by distillation.
