Auch bezüglich ihrer Oberflächengestaltung werden von der Post keine Vorschriften gemacht. Dem Couvertschneider sind daher bezüglich Materialwahl kaum Grenzen gesetzt. Geschenk- und Schrankpapiere, sowohl Abfallpapiere wie Zeitungen, Zeitschriften, alte Landkarten, Kalender, Poster usw. eignen sich als Material.
