DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to a pneumatic tire for a vehicle wheel, which comprises a tread with variable configuration.
Known studded tires can improve handling on icy roads, but they cause excessive friction of studs on dry pavement, which leads to their premature wear, damage to the pavement, as well as pollution. of the environment. Thus, despite the increased road safety of vehicles equipped with studded tires traveling on icy roads, the restrictions and prohibitions imposed because of the mentioned disadvantages constituted a major obstacle to the more widespread use of conventional studded tires. This limitation is particularly unsatisfactory, given on the one hand the need to increase road safety in winter and in particular to reduce frequent accidents on icy roads, and on the other hand given the important advantages that studded tires can offer. this regard.
The object of the invention is to provide a pneumatic tire enabling increased safety on icy roads, while largely obviating the aforementioned drawbacks of conventional studded tires commonly used.
To this end, the tire according to the invention, as defined in claim 1, is essentially characterized in that it comprises a tread with variable configuration which has a studded, concave central part and which is arranged so that the tire can operate selectively at two predetermined inflation pressure limits.
The tire according to the invention can be inflated, on the one hand, to a lower limit pressure, which said central part maintains its concave shape and thus remains in an inactive position.
When the inflation of this tire is increased, on the other hand, at an upper limit pressure, its tread is radially deformed, has a convex shape and thus brings its central studded part into an active position in which it can come into contact. with icy pavement, thanks to this inflation at said upper limit pressure.
Thus, the studded surface of this central part can be selectively positioned in its inactive or active position by simply adjusting the inflation pressure of the tire to one or the other of said limit pressures so that this studded surface is either maintained in its inactive position, where it is set back and removed from the road, or brought into its active position where this studded surface can come into contact with the road, especially when rolling on icy roads, in order to be able to thus ensure a satisfactory rolling also both on dry roads and on icy roads.
The tire according to the invention lends itself particularly well to wheels with multiple tires of the type described in Swiss patent No. 652975. Wheels with multiple tires of this type are provided with at least two tires mounted in parallel on a multiple rim, and arranged thereon to bear laterally against one another in a small area in the vicinity of the tread. Such a multi-tire wheel has an equivalent or greater total tread surface to that of an extra large tire, the disadvantages of which are, however, largely avoided.
The advantages of the invention can be illustrated by the embodiment of the tire described below by way of nonlimiting example, with reference to the appended drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a partial schematic view in cross section of a tire according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a partial schematic view of a wheel equipped with two tires, one tire of which is in accordance with the invention.
The tire profile is shown in schematic partial section in FIG. 1 in its configuration in the inflated state at a lower limit pressure pl. It has two curved lateral sides 1 and a tread 2A, 2B, 2C with variable configuration which can be adapted to different road conditions.
As can be seen in FIG. 1, the tread has a studded, concave central part 2C, arranged between two lateral parts 2A and 2B suitable for rolling on dry roads. The central part 2C is provided with protruding studs 3 fixed on its external surface which has a concave shape designed so that it can be maintained in an inactive position, in which the studs 3 are set back from the lateral parts 2A, 2B ( see Fig. 1), these nails thus being kept away from the roadway.
This inactive position of the studded central part is obtained when the tire is inflated to a first predetermined pressure, which constitutes a lower pressure limit pl of inflation corresponding to walking on a dry road.
The tire described is also designed to allow inflation of the tire to a second predetermined pressure, which constitutes an upper pressure limit p2 of inflation corresponding to an active position of the central part 2C, in which the tread is deformed radially towards the outside, so that its shape becomes convex. Thus, thanks to this active position of the central part 2C, the nails 3 of the latter are brought into their active position, in which they protrude relative to the tread, in order to be able to improve the road holding and the grip on icy pavement.
The tire described is thus provided with a tread with variable configuration designed so that it can adapt at will to the condition of the road surface and in particular to changes from a dry road to an icy road, and vice vice versa, thanks solely to a simple variation of the inflation between said pressure limits.
FIG. 2 very schematically shows a partial section of a wheel fitted with two tires 4 and 5 mounted respectively on two elementary rims 6A and 6B forming part of a common multiple rim 6. The tire 5 represented on the right in FIG. 2 comprises a variable configuration tread 2A, 2B, 2C arranged in accordance with the invention. The tire 4, on the other hand, has a more or less conventional profile, its height H and its maximum width L being however the same for the two tires 4 and 5.
These two tires 4, 5 are mounted in parallel on the elementary rims 6A and 6B of the rigid multiple rim 6 so as to constitute a multiple tire wheel of the type which is the subject of the Swiss patent NO 652975 mentioned above.
The H / L ratio of the height H to the maximum width L of the profile of the two tires 4 and 5 according to FIG. 2 can correspond to approximately 100%; it will generally be between 80% and 100%.
The profile of the tire 5 represented on the right in FIG. 2 moreover has a tread with variable configuration 2A, 2B, 2C according to the invention, which is analogous to that of the tire already described with respect to FIG. 1. Thus, the similar elements already described bear the same reference numbers in FIGS. 1 and 2.
The tread 2 of the tire 4 disposed on the left in FIG. 2 comprises a more or less conventional tread 2 which has a convex configuration, therefore without the studded central part as provided according to the present invention.
It should be noted that, when the two tires 4 and 5 are mounted in parallel on the elementary rims 6A and 6B of the multiple rim 6 and inflated, they together occupy a total width equal to twice their width L and in addition the interval which separates their contiguous sides when they are assembled and inflated. This interval X between the adjacent sidewalls of the two inflated tires is relatively small and is designed so as to allow the tires to bear laterally against one another in a very restricted area of the sidewalls, located at a short distance from their strips. of rolling.
This special combination constituting a wheel with multiple tires mounted so as to allow their lateral support is described in more detail in Swiss patent N "652 975, and can be better understood by referring to this patent.
Such a combination of tires according to FIG. 2 will thus roughly correspond to the dimensions and proportions of a single tire with a very low profile having an extra wide tread.
The special arrangement of the wheel described according to FIG. 2 thus constitutes a particularly advantageous combination of the present invention with the prior invention which is the subject of said Swiss patent. Such a combination thus provides a multi-tire wheel having together two contiguous treads, which are supported laterally one on the other, and thus making it possible to obtain a noticeable improvement in road holding and grip on dry roads, as well as icy roads.
It is understood that a multi-tire wheel as described above, of the type covered by the aforementioned Swiss patent, may also include, if necessary, three tires, or even more, insofar as the available technical space provided for mounting the wheel on the vehicle allows.
Thus, for example, a wheel fitted with three tires, of the type according to said Swiss patent, can advantageously comprise two more or less conventional tires which are mounted on either side of a central tire comprising a tread with variable configuration which has a studded, concave central part in accordance with the present invention.
It may be envisaged, if necessary, to equip a wheel with multiple tires of said type of a single tire or else of several tires comprising a tread with variable configuration according to the present invention.
The tire according to the invention can be manufactured in a suitable mold, the internal surface of which is provided with a convex annular part serving to delimit the concave shape of said central part of the tread with variable configuration.
Said studded, concave central part of the tread with variable configuration provided according to the invention is arranged so that it has elasticity and resistance to radial bending which allow it to maintain its concave shape in its inactive position during inflation. at said lower limit pressure, to deform radially towards its active position, when the inflation is increased at said upper limit pressure, and to resume its concave shape to return to its inactive position, when the inflation pressure is reduced to said limit pressure lower.
The structure of this studded central part provided according to the invention, its concave configuration, as well as its composition and its reinforcement can be chosen so as to give it the shape and the characteristics required so that it can be brought selectively into its active positions. and inactive, only by inflating the tire to said upper and lower limit pressures.
Said limit pressures will be chosen from case to case depending on the structure, dimensions, characteristics and conditions of use (load, speed, etc.) of the tire according to the invention. These pressure limits, provided for carrying out the variable configuration of the tread in accordance with the invention, can have, for example, a value around 1.6 bar for the lower limit pl and around 2.4 bar for the upper limit p2.
Said tread, and in particular its studded central part provided according to the invention, can be provided with any suitable reinforcement to give it the required flexural strength and allow it to maintain its concave shape in its inactive position.
Such a frame can be formed for example of a metal mesh, synthetic material, or any other suitable material.
Said studded central part can be provided with nails implanted in a manner known per se and distributed in any appropriate, more or less conventional, for example an arrangement of the nails staggered on this central part of the tread.
The present invention thus makes it possible to obtain a tire having a relatively simple structure and having a variable configuration which can be selectively easily adapted, simply by inflating to the appropriate limiting pressure, in order to ensure satisfactory rolling on dry roads, as well as on icy road.
