Office equipment for sharpening compass mines currently on the market consists of a simple wooden board on which is fixed a strip of sandpaper.
On the other hand, after having consulted various patents concerning the sharpening of compass mines at the Federal Property Office
Intellectual in Bern, we found that only a patent from the
Federal Republic of Germany N "2622 187 describes an apparatus making it possible to carry out this operation. However, this latter does not make it possible to guide the branch of the compass supporting the mine.
The apparatus of the present invention also makes it possible to make the sharpening operation non-messy, to guide the arms of the compass supporting the mine and thus to avoid their breakage and to obtain a sharp bevel sharpening always having the same angle and the same orientation. It is therefore not essential to have a clean edge to redo a complete bevel, hence saving the mine.
The attached drawings represent an execution of the object of the invention.

Fig. 4 is a section through B-B
Fig. 5 shows an example of a guide sleeve
The object of the present invention represented by FIGS. 1 to 5 consists of 4 elements which are:
A two-part hollow body 1 in which the sharpening operation is carried out, which prevents the graphite particles from spreading around.
- A rough surface 4 located in the bottom of the hollow body and on which comes to rub the mine to sharpen.
- A hollow socket 5 into which are introduced the compass arms supporting the lead, until the latter comes into contact with the rough surface.
- A system for holding and guiding the sleeve, consisting of a circular orifice made in the upper part of the hollow body 3 and surrounded inside the latter by a frustoconical seat 7 on which the spherical seat of the sleeve and to the outside by an elastic collar 6 allowing the sleeve to be held in the seat. The guide member of the socket itself consists of a groove located in the extension of the frustoconical seat inside the hollow body and is intended to prevent the socket from rotating around its longitudinal axis.
The device mentioned above can be manufactured entirely by plastic injection in 3 parts which are:
- The lower part of the hollow body with a flat surface which will be roughened later by the addition of abrasive.
- The upper part of the hollow body with the elastic collar, the frustoconical seat and the guide groove.
- The socket.
It is also possible to fabricate the rough surface separately and to attach it to the bottom of the hollow body. The assembly is done by fitting the two parts forming the hollow body, then by the introduction of the sleeve through the circular orifice.
The way to use the device is as follows:
Introduce the branch of the compass supporting the lead through the interior hole of the socket so that the lead comes out through the lower end of the latter and comes into contact with the rough surface.
Then print the compass back and forth in an arc, and thus the friction of the mine against the rough surface allows to sharpen bevel after a few repeated movements.
