Filtration devices are already known which are arranged in the form of a nozzle intended to be mounted at the end of a pipe leading the liquid to be filtered. A tip of this kind is described in particular in Swiss patent CH 638689. However, these are bulky devices formed from an assembly of numerous elements.
However, in certain activities, in particular in certain laboratory work. low volume samples are prepared from repeated sands. in particular liquid samples for analysis by gas chromatography. These samples result from reactions which are carried out in miniaturized flasks having a volume of less than 1 cm 3 for example and, in many cases. the liquid in the flask after the reaction is mixed with solids or muddy residue. This is particularly the case when certain organic materials such as tobacco leaf segments are introduced into the reaction bottles.
Until now, it has been the practice to extract the liquid contained in the bottles by pouring it onto a filter paper and recovering the filtrate for analysis by gas chromatography.
The present invention responds to the idea of seeking a means to facilitate and accelerate these manipulations.
Thus, the invention relates to a filter tip, in particular for the preparation of analyzes by gas chromatography, characterized in that it comprises an elongated tubular neck adaptable to a syringe needle and a sleeve which extends the neck and contains at the minus a filter mass.
In fact, during the manipulations alluded to above, syringes are commonly used to collect the liquid in the reaction bottle and transfer it to another bottle. The creation of a filtering tip capable of adapting to the needle of a syringe makes it possible to combine the operation of taking up the liquid resulting from the reaction with the filtering operation, and with the operation of returning the liquid. in another vial, either for another reaction, or for analysis by chromatography.
Two embodiments of the subject of the invention will be described below by way of example with reference to the appended drawing, of which:
fig. 1 is a partially cut elevation view of a syringe, the needle of which is fitted with a filtering tip and is engaged in a reaction bottle,
fig. 2 is a sectional view on a larger scale of a first embodiment of the end piece, and
fig. 3 is also a sectional view on a larger scale of a second embodiment of the nozzle.
We see in fig. 1 a reaction bottle 1 of conventional construction which is shown in section and the dimensions of which are such that it can contain from 0.05 to 1 cm 3 of liquid. A mass 2 of liquid having undergone a certain reaction is contained in this bottle and, with the aim of extracting the liquid while separating it from solid residues 3 contained in the bottle. a syringe 4 is used, the needle 5 of which is provided with a filter tip 5. According to the embodiment shown in FIG. 2, The filter tip 6 consists of a sleeve 7 and a neck 8. These two parts are tubular elements of circular cylindrical shape made of plastic, for example Teflon or Nylon.
The sleeve 7 is a tube about 1.5 mm in internal diameter and 8 to 10 mm in length, its external diameter being of the order of 3 mm. As for the neck 8, it is a tubular segment whose external diameter is 1.5 mm. while the internal diameter is about 0.4 mm in the example described. As can be seen, the neck 8 is engaged inside the sleeve 7 over a distance greater than half the length so that there remains at the end of the sleeve 7 opposite the neck 8 a cylindrical space which can be 1 to 3 mm long for a diameter corresponding to the internal diameter of the sleeve. or 1.5 mm. To achieve the rigid structure of the end piece, one can simply force the tube 8 inside the sleeve 7, by choosing tube segments whose diameters are adjusted with a slight tightening.
Of course, the two parts can also be glued to one another or, if necessary, mold the end piece in one piece to the shape shown in FIG. 2 onâla fig. 3.
The extreme space of the nozzle in fig. 2 is occupied by a filtering mass 9 constituted by a small plug of agglomerated glass wool.
For the implementation of the tip 6. one can start by engaging the needle 5 of the syringe inside the neck 8 by observing how far it penetrates under the effect of a slight force of commitment. The needle is then withdrawn and the neck is cut along a line 10 shown in phantom in FIG. 2 in such a way that. by reengaging the neck 8 on the needle 5. the end of the latter arrives approximately at the internal end of the neck. The syringe, the needle of which is provided with its tip, can then be engaged in the reaction bottle 1 and by maneuvering the piston 1 1 we suck the liquid 2 through the filtering mass 9 so that we re superior the liquid 2 in the filtered state.
Fig. 3 shows an embodiment of the nozzle 6 which differs slightly from that of FIG. 2 in the sense that the free space between the internal end of the neck 8 and the end of the sleeve 7 is of greater length than it is in the embodiment according to FIG. 2. In this case, the length of this space could reach for example 4 to 5 mm.
This free space is occupied by two filter masses 12 and 13 constituted by small plugs of agglomerated glass wool. On the other hand, between these two buffers is placed a trapping mass 14.
While the filtering mass is a mass completely inert with respect to the liquid 2, the trapping mass 14 is chosen on the other hand so as to be able to exert a predetermined action on the liquid which passes through it. If applicable. the glass wool will be treated so that its chemical inertness with respect to the liquid is perfect and preferably quartz wool will be used.
On the other hand. for the trapping mass. different possibilities are open. In the case where the desired action on the filtered liquid is a selective trapping action. the trapping mass could consist of the following products:
SiO silica
Selective trapping mixture (Florisil) SiOrMgO
Alumina Al203
Lead oxide PhO
Examples
If the liquid in the reaction bottle is a mixture of aldehyde. of ketone and alkane, the use of the abovementioned trapping masses gives the following results:
1) with lead oxide the aldehyde is removed.
2) with silica the aldehyde is also removed,
3) with the Florisil mixture, the aldehyde and the ketone are removed.
It is also possible, as trapping agent, to use materials capable of absorbing water, and consequently of acting as desiccants. Common drying agents can be used for this function. as
CaCI2
MgSO4
Na2SO4
Indeed, in the case where a non-aqueous solvent is used for the reaction product, it may happen that it contains a certain proportion of water. The desiccants mentioned are capable of capturing a water content of up to a few percent.
The described tip can be produced very easily in very large quantities and it considerably simplifies laboratory operations. Its field of use extends to samples of volume greater than or equal to 50 mm3 and it is applicable to the following operations:
filtration of heterogeneous samples (solid-liquid),
selective filtration by trapping,
drying samples.
By providing an internal diameter of the neck slightly smaller than the external diameter of the syringe needle on which the nozzle is intended to adapt, it provides mechanical fixing and sealing of the junction.
Finally, as mentioned above, the length of the neck will be provided sufficient so that it can be shortened in case the engagement force on the syringe needle is too considerable. The difference in diameter may for example be 0.1 mm and, for a needle with an outside diameter of 0.5 mm, a neck with an inside diameter of 0.4 mm will be provided, for example.
