Abstract

The internal combustion engine with two opposed pistons (1) per cylinder (2) is intended to essentially improve the efficiency. In cylinders with only one piston the pressure-efficiency in the two limit positions of the piston fluctuates between 40% and 16%. In cylinders with two opposed pistons this figure is 80% to 31%. Since the two pistons each have only to perform half the stroke, the mass motions are also reduced. Due to the essentially improved utilisation of the combustion pressure the overall efficiency of such engines is increased and the fuel consumption thereby reduced. <IMAGE>

   PATENTANSPRUCH

   PATENT CLAIM
Explosion engine with one or more cylinders in which the air-gas mixture is caused to explode by ignition sparks, characterized in that two pistons (1) rotating in opposite directions are arranged in each cylinder (2), each of which increases the explosion pressure via a piston rod (3 ) transmitted to the two synchronized crankshafts (4), which drive one or more working shafts (6) by means of a transmission mechanism (5).

The invention relates to an explosion engine with one or more cylinders with two pistons each.

Explosion engines of this type with only one piston per cylinder are known, in which the explosion pressure acts on the one hand on the piston crown and on the other hand on the cylinder head and cylinder jacket. The explosion pressure is achieved by causing the compressed air-gas mixture to explode using an ignition spark. Such explosion engines can only convert the pressure on a piston surface into work force, while the larger part of the surface, namely the cylinder wall and head, is only heated, which heat has to be transferred to the cooling system without any work. The invention aims to better utilize the explosion pressure and thereby increase the power output. This is achieved in that at the time of the explosion the pressure mainly acts on the two pistons 1 and only to a very small extent on the cylinder wall 2.

The pistons transmit this pressure via piston rods 3 to two crankshafts 4, which are synchronized by means of a transmission mechanism 5 and drive one or more working shafts 6.
