Abstract

The water-soluble polyurethanes are obtained by reaction of a sulphonated polyester with a diisocyanate. The sulphonic groups may be carried by the 5-sulphoisophthalic acid or sulphosuccinic acid residues. The polyester has a sulphur content of 0.8 to 2 % and the reaction between the polyester and the diisocyanate takes place in a molar ratio NCO/OH+COOH equal to or lower than 1. The aqueous solutions containing 5-6 % of the polyurethanes thus obtained are clear and stable and do not foul the weaving looms. They are employed, for example, for sizing polyester warp yarns.
