The present invention relates to a device for photographic composition of texts comprising a rotating drum equipped with fonts, a flash tube intended to illuminate the selected character and an optical system for transferring the image of the selected character onto a photographic film.
In the imagesetters known to date, the character matrices are generally in the form of glass discs bearing negative character fonts.
The fonts are either transferred to a metallized surface of the disc, or printed on a photographic film attached to the glass disc.
The fonts are mounted on the periphery of a drum or cylinder which is driven by a continuous rotating movement. Fonts are made of glass or flexible negative film. The chosen character is briefly illuminated by a flash tube as it passes an optical system intended to transfer it to photographic film or sensitive paper. The number of signs that can be reproduced using such devices is between 10,000 and 200,000 signs per hour. The duration of the flash is therefore very short, of the order of a micro-second. However, even during this very short period of time, there is a shift in the chosen character. This is due to the rotation of the font drum. The result is that the flashed character observed on the photographic film will be blurred.
The object of the invention is to eliminate this drawback and to make the photographic quality of the flashed character independent of the speed of rotation of the drum and is characterized in that the optical system comprises means for temporarily immobilizing the image of the selected character and in that said means for temporarily immobilizing the image are placed at the input of the optical system transferring the image onto the photographic film.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment and a variant of the device which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a schematic view showing a rotating blade with parallel faces mounted between the font-holder drum and the optical system transmitting the image on a photographic film.
Fig. 2 is a schematic view, showing a variant of FIG. 1, in which the rotating blade with parallel faces is replaced by a linearly movable mirror, and
fig. 3 is a schematic view, showing the member used to rotate a blade with parallel faces.
Fig. 1 is a schematic view, showing a rotating blade with parallel faces 1, mounted between the font-holder drum 2 and the optical system 7 transmitting the image onto the photographic film. The font-holder drum 2 rotates in the direction of arrow 4. The selected character 5 is illuminated by the flash tube 6 and then transferred to the photographic film 3 by means of the rotating blade with parallel faces 1 of the optical system 7. If we consider that the drum 2 is animated by a rapid rotational movement, there will occur, during the lighting period of the selected character 5, a displacement of 51 in 5 of said character 5.
As the selected character 5 moves from 5 'to 5X', the parallel face rotating blade 1 will rotate on its axis 8 from position 1 'to position 1S' so as to constantly correct the impact of light rays at the entrance 9 of the optical system 7. After the character has been illuminated and impressed on the photographic film 3, the rotating plate with parallel faces 1 will again come to occupy the position 1 '. It can be noted that a form of movement of the rotating blade with parallel faces 1 which does not correspond exactly at all times to the movement of the character 5 already allows almost perfect compensation since the system only acts on the correction of the included error. between the 5 'and 5 "positions.
The shift of the spectral colors in the beam emerging from character 5 cannot be a problem because the difference between positions 5 ′ and 5 will be of the order of 1/100 of a millimeter. One could imagine that the rotating blade with parallel faces 1 is animated by a continuous rotational movement synchronized with the passage of the character 5 and the start of the flash of the flash tube 6. It would also be possible to give the blade with faces parallels 1 an oscillatory movement synchronized with the passage of the character 5 and the start of the flash of the flash tube 6.
Fig. 2 is a schematic view, showing a variant of FIG. 1, in which the rotating blade with parallel faces 1 is replaced by a mirror 10 movable linearly from a position 10 'to a position 10 ".
The selected character 5 will move from 5 'to 5 "exactly as explained above. Mirror 10 will move from position 10' to position 10" as the character goes from 5 'to 5'. The displacement of the mirror 10 is achieved by using the phenomenon of magneto-striction applied to a nickel bar 11 surrounded by an induction coil 12. The mirror 10 is fixed by gluing to the end of the nickel bar 11. L The use of this principle is made possible by the fact that the displacements which it is desired to obtain are very small, of the order of 1/100 of a millimeter.
As previously, we can note that the shape of the movement of the translation of the mirror 10 practically does not influence the correction and that the impact of the beam, at the entrance of the optical system 7, will always take place at the same place. The translational movement of the mirror 10 will be synchronized with the passage of the selected character 5 and the start of the flash of the flash tube 6. Another solution, to correct the shift of the character 5 would consist in using a mirror instead of a blade with parallel faces.
However, this way of proceeding is only suitable for very small displacements of the selected character 5, this due to the fact that for large displacements of the selected character 5 the angles of refraction of the rays coming from the different points of the image are different in color. function of the angular position of the mirror with respect to the incident rays coming from the image of the character.
Fig. 3 is a schematic view showing the member used to rotate a blade with parallel faces. A blade with parallel faces 12 is fixed by one of its faces 13 to a metal wire 14. The blade with parallel faces 12 pivots with an axis 15 which is itself also fixed to the face 13 of said blade with parallel faces 12. The pin 15 engages at each of its ends in the bearings 16 and 17. The metal wire 14 is held at its lower part 18 in a support 19 while its upper part 20 is equipped with a roller 21 anchored in a support 22 by means of a rod 23. The supports 19 and 22 are connected by tie rods 28. A permanent magnet 24 creates a magnetic field B passing in the same plane as that defined by the two strands 25 and 26 of the wire metal 14. A pulse source 27 applies a current I to the metal wire 14.
This procedure is similar to that used in a galvanometer with a movable frame for example. It is obvious that one could use other means than that described above to make the blade with parallel faces pivot, these means using known principles such as an electromagnet or an electric motor.
The device which is the subject of the invention behaves practically like a static photocomposer (typefaces immobilized during the period of exposure of the character), which results in offering excellent photographic quality of the character and to allow a higher working speed while having a large amount of light due to the fact that it is possible to maintain the flash of the flash tube for a period corresponding to the travel time of the selected character.
