Feeder for automatic printing press
The present invention relates to a feeder for an automatic printing press.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the feeder according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the feeder placed on said printing press.
Fig. 2 is a bottom elevational view of FIG. 1 when a group of members of the feeder is supposed to be removed, as well as a bar A of the press.
This automatic press provided with the feeder shown, is of the type comprising a feeler bar T whose raising and lowering movements, above the table D from which the sheets F of paper to be printed leave, are part of the cycle of functions. automatic corresponding to each sheet and serving to keep constant the height of the top sheet F1 of the stack. By one of its ends, not shown, the bar T is integral with a parallel bar A which carries a series of suckers S, S ', S ", etc. The feeder shown is an accessory device which comprises a frame C in the form of a cap with a rectangular periphery, the hollow face of which is turned downwards and the thickness of which is one to several millimeters.
The section of the frame in a plane transverse to the long sides of the perimeter has the shape of a segment of a hexagon as obtained by cutting a hexagon made normally at two of its opposite and parallel sides. It follows that the frame has two upper faces inclined in opposite directions and separated by a median edge which extends, here, like the concavity, only over part of the length, part limited by an internal transverse face designated by f. The part of the frame between this internal face and the nearest end is perforated transversely with a cylindrical hole in which the aforesaid feeler bar T is freely adjusted.
The frame can be fixed to this bar in various positions by means of a screw g passing through it to this bar and the visible end of which is pierced with a hexagonal hole corresponding to a key not shown while a lock nut E is screwed on this screw to tighten against the bottom of a recess i made around the screw in the frame, which ends there with a triangular inclined facet h then with a rod m fixed at its end and extending normally at bar T to below bar A.
It can be seen that the two bars A and T are above one of the edges of the sheets F and that the frame C extends for the most part from the side of the middle of the table D. Its angular position around the bar T which is not rotatable is determined either by tightening screw g or by rod m. This position is that for which the base of the frame is parallel to the sheets.
The role of the frame is to carry the means by which at least two levers L1 and
L2 whose articulation axes G1 and G2 are each in a horizontal plane and one of which, G1, is in the middle of the width of the frame and is perpendicular to any vertical plane parallel to the bar T, and of which l 'other, G2, is parallel to this bar. In the embodiment shown, the frame also carries a third lever L3 articulated around the same axis G1 as the lever L1, which axis is that of a screw at rest H1 passing through these two levers, while a screw to rest H2 guides the L2 lever in rotation.
Each of these three levers carries, at the end of one of its arms, a roller crossed along its axis by a cylindrical rod t on which it is free to turn and whose directing axis is in a plane normal to the axis of the lever and intersects this axis or deviates from it by an acute angle. Each of the levers is subjected to a return force tending to keep its roller at the bottom of its stroke. This force is here due in part to the weight of the roller and to the fact that the arm of the lever which carries this roller is longer than the other. This force could be due at least in part to a spring whose tension would be adjustable by means of a screw. The shape of the rollers shown is that of a segment of a sphere of more than half a turn at the front connected to a frustoconical part at the rear.
These two parts are made of a high density metal and a rubber cap bl, b2, b3 covers at least the spherical part of each of the three rollers
B1, B2 and B3. The rubber can be replaced here by another flexible material having a high coefficient of friction on the paper. The metal part of the rollers could be entirely spherical like the rubber balls of the analogous device described in Patent No. 382769. It could also have various other forms of revolution such as that of a double truncated cone. The role of rubber is described. below.
Apart from two perpendicular sides of the table D, the automatic press comprises two stop members, one of which is a wall P, parallel to the bars A and T, and the other a stop K.
The purpose of the described feeder is to ensure that the sheets to be printed will all come into contact exactly with these stop pieces so that the equality of the margins reserved between the edges of the text and of the paper is ensured on all copies of the same printed. For this, the apparatus further comprises screws V1, V2 and V3 mounted through the upper wall of the frame and respectively above the arms of the levers which are opposite to the arms carrying the rollers. It has not been shown in FIG. 2 as regards the levers L1 and L3, although the lever L2 must be brought into play at the same time as one or the other of the other two.
We see in fig. 2 that it is the lever L1 which is put into action because the screw V1 is unscrewed so as to let it take almost its greatest possible inclination while the screw V3 is screwed in such a way that it maintains the lever L3 practically horizontal .
It is understood that the - periodic movement of lowering the bar T first causes the roller B1 to rest on the sheet F1 with a force depending on its weight and which, thanks to the high coefficient of friction of the rubber cap on the paper, gives rise to a virtual friction greater than the friction determined by this same force between the first sheet F1 and the underlying sheet. However, at the first contact of the roller with the paper, the lever is in an inclined position such that the line passing through this point of contact and through the axis in a plane normal to the shape axis, with the horizontal plane passing through the 'axis, an acute angle a whose value t decreases during the lowering of the bar T.
I1 follows a movement of the point of contact to the right which drives the sheet Fl by the virtual friction of the roller on this sheet. This is therefore pushed to the right until its edge meets the stop K, provided that the latter is not far from the initial position of the edge of the sheet by a distance greater than the maximum displacement. d of the point of contact. From this meeting, the roller can continue its relative upward movement by sliding itself on the paper. At the same time as the roller B1 pushed the sheet to the right, the roller B2 pushed it against the stop P. It was therefore necessary that the two rollers roll somewhat on the sheet. This is why they are movable on their rods.
The side walls of the frame have notches h allowing the ascent of the levers.
