Centering Cutter The centering cutters used heretofore are in one piece and when the drill end which is relatively small in diameter compared to the cutter body breaks, the entire cutter must be replaced which represents a serious drawback.
The invention aims to remedy this drawback and the centering cutter which is the subject thereof is characterized in that it comprises a drill bit and a cylindrical mandrel, one end of which is generally conical in shape is relief, this mandrel having an axial bore. in which said bit is disposed with its active end projecting the conical end of the mandrel and means for locking this bit in the bore.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the centering cutter forming the subject of the present invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of this cutter. Fig. 2: is a view in axial section.
The centering cutter shown comprises a drill bit 1 and a cylindrical mandrel 2, one end 3 of generally conical shape of which is offset at 4. The mandrel 2 has an axial bore 5 in which the drill bit 1 is placed with its active end l '. protruding from the conical end 3 of the man drin 2.
A transverse hole 6 is also drilled in the mandrel 2 and tapped to receive a locking screw 7, the end of which comes to rest against the bit 1 to lock it in the axial bore 5.
The advantages of the centering cutter described are that it can adjust the length of the active end of there bit, that it can be easily replaced in the event of breakage or that it can also be resharpened in the event of a break.
Alternatively, the two ends of the support sleeve could be tapered. In this case, the bit locking screw would be centrally located in the middle of the mandrel between its two ends. One could also provide a united locking screw at each end of the mandrel.
