Device for fixing a cutting tool in a tool holder The present invention relates to a device for fixing a cutting tool in a tool holder, intended more particularly for machining metals, for example for drilling. .
Cutting tools are already known which have a cutting edge located at the end of an externally threaded key. The position of the cutting edge can be adjusted by moving the cartridge along the axis of its thread. To do this, loosen a locking screw, rotate an adjusting ring screwed onto the cartridge and tighten the locking screw again. The adjusting ring rests on a precisely machined surface forming a seat which has a tool holder such as, for example, the arm of a boring machine. The position of the cutting edge depends on the desired depth of cut in the workpiece.
When a cartridge of the type described above has been mounted on the arm of a boring machine or on another tool holder, it is often necessary to advance the cutting edge slightly. This need most often arises from the wear of the cutting edge.
However, it may also happen that the cartridge needs to be retouched to its original position. Even when the position of the ring on the cartridge has been determined beforehand, it may be necessary to make a fine adjustment after the cartridge has been placed on the tool holder. This need arises from minimal variations between the position of the ring as it is predetermined. And its position once the cartridge is fixed to the tool holder.
The aim of the present invention is therefore to perfect cutting tools of the type mentioned above by equipping them with means allowing the tool to be easily adjusted without it being necessary to loosen and tighten a member. blocking.
In a preferred embodiment, the device also makes it possible to fix the cutting tool in such a way that the ring which determines the position of the cartridge only presses on its seat with a moderate force, which avoids the possibility of inaccuracies resulting from too much tightening of the locking screw.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the. device according to the invention. Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a: detail of a. tool holder to which a tool is attached and, FIG. 2 is a sectional view along the line II-II of FIG. 1.
The drawing shows a tool holder which is constituted by an arm 10 partially shown in FIG. 1. This tool holder could also be of another type. However, a tool holder for turning, a rotating head, a disc milling cutter and other supporting members could also be arranged to receive the tool which will be described. The arm 10 shown in FIG. 1,
has a housing which is intended to receive a tool and which is formed by a number of elements: a conical seat 12, projecting from a surface 14, a bore 16, a cylindrical bore 18, and a bore 20. The conical seat 12, as well as the bores 16 and 20, and the main bore 18 are coaxial and form a housing which passes right through the arm 10. The bore 20 may be referred to as the rear bore of the housing.
A radially extending annular shoulder 22 separates the bottom of the bore 20 from the bore 18. The latter has two grooves 24 extending axially and diametrically opposed to each other, the function of these grooves being explained below. .
The tool which is engaged in this housing comprises a cartridge 26 which carries a cutting element 28 at one of its ends. This element can be made of tungsten carbide or some other hard material. It is sharpened to present a cutting edge. The cartridge 26 is provided with an external thread 30 which extends over the greater part of its length. It also has a threaded central hole 32 which opens into its rear end.
A guide collar 34 with a diameter greater than that of the threads 30 extends outside the cartridge in the vicinity of its rear end. Tenons 36 project from the collar 34 at two diametrically opposed points of this collar and each extend into one of the grooves 24.
The collar 34 is adjusted so as to slide without play in the central bore 18 while the threads 30 are kept slightly apart from the internal face of this bore. The engagement of tenons 36 -in grooves 24 prevents any rotation of cartridge 26, while allowing it to move axially.
The position of the cartridge 26 in the housing of the ball arm 10 is determined by an adjustable ring 38 which has a conical seat 40 resting on the conical seat 12. The ring 38 is also provided with flaps 42 and an axial opening. threaded 44 by means of which it can be engaged on the thread 30.
A conical upper surface portion 46 carries graduations which make it possible to measure the angular displacement of the ring relative to a fixed point marked on the arm 10.
It can be seen that a rofiation of the tba # gue 38 carried out in such a way that this ring is kept pressed against the seat 12 causes an axial displacement of the cartridge 26.
In use, the adjustable ring 318: is held pressed against the seat 12 by a locking screw 48 which has a flat head 50 in which a conical bearing surface 52 is formed. This surface of the locking screw bears against a conical seat 56 which has an intermediate ring 54. The latter is a rigid ring one of the front faces of which is formed by a planar annular surface 58. Its outer side face forms a cylindrical surface 60.
The annular face 58 bears against an elastic ring 62 formed for example by a flat corrugated ring. Ring 62 can be formed from a relatively thin sheet of metal. Its: diameter is slightly less than that of the bore 20 in which it is engaged and it presses against the shoulder 22. When screwing the locking screw 48, in the: tapped hole 32 of the cartridge 26, the rigid ring 54 compresses the elastic washer 62 against the shoulder 22.
When the cartridge is first installed in the arm 10 the locking screw 48 is tightened just enough to cause the spring 62 to start to compress. Then the cartridge 26 can be advanced somewhat without loosening or retightening the screw 48. For this, the ring 38 is rotated in a direction such that the cutting element 28 moves away from the seat 10.
The resulting movement of the rigid ring 34 which is driven with the cartridge 26 by the locking screw 48 causes compression of the spring 62. The possible adjustment range of the cartridge without tightening the screw 48 depends on the displacement. which can be done until the corrugated washer 62 is completely flattened.
If the washer 62 compresses enough to allow the cartridge 26 to move 0.3-0.5mm, this is sufficient in most cases.
Those skilled in the art will understand that the vast majority of the forces which are: applied to the cartridge 26 tend to press the ring 38 against its seat 12. However, the spring 62 must offer sufficient resistance to compression to avoid accidental release of this ring. On the other hand, the spring 62 should not be so strong that it requires too much force to cause the ring 38 to rotate on the cartridge 26.
It follows from the foregoing that the ring 38 can be driven in rotation by means of a key engaging on the faces 42, which allows the adjustment of the cartridge 26 without loosening or tightening the screw 48. In addition, any adjustment of the cartridge 26 carried out under these conditions presents a very great precision in that the ring 38 remains applied against its seat 12 during the entire adjustment operation and that the forces applied to the ring 38 prevent accidental rotation of this ring during or after adjustment.
It will also be noted that the ring 38 is held against its seat 1,2 by a force of the magnitude of those which are exerted by the annular spring 62. Previous constructions which did not include this spring presented the inconvenience. that the locking screw was often tightened with such force that the accuracy of the position of the cutting edge suffered.
It is clear that the device described above avoids this drawback and, consequently, increases the precision of the tool.
