<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
semi-circulaire.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Waterproof watch case and method of manufacturing this case The present patent relates to a waterproof watch case comprising a stainless steel back screwed to a composite middle part formed of an outer annular body constituting the visible part of the middle part and a inner ring integral with the outer body.
It also relates to a method of manufacturing this box.
Watch cases are already known, the various elements of which are at least partially made of a soft metal such as brass, nickel silver or aluminum and the exterior appearance of which is improved by galvanic treatment or by anodic oxidation.
Watch cases are also known which include a stainless steel caseback and a soft metal caseband. Generally, the visible surface of the middle part is treated by chrome plating, nickel plating, plating or the like.
The use of these mixed constructions has various advantages. The stainless steel bottom perfectly resists the effects of perspiration and does not irritate the skin. On the other hand, this relatively thin part does not present great machining difficulties. For the middle part, the use of a soft metal makes it possible, on the other hand, to considerably reduce the manufacturing costs and the surface treatment to which it is subjected gives it good resistance to external agents.
Composite cases have also been constructed formed of a thin outer part, but of much greater thickness than a galvanic coating or a plating, in stainless steel or another unalterable metal, this thin outer part being integral with a inner ring made of a soft metal such as brass or aluminum or even of plastic.
However, these composite middle cases have a serious drawback when they are used to form a waterproof case the back of which is screwed to the middle, a drawback which has prompted several manufacturers of neat watches to give up this construction. The stainless steel thread at the back tears particles from the soft metal thread of the middle, each time the back is locked in place and especially when the case comes out of production.
When the watch manufacturer then opens these boxes and assembles the movements in them, said particles fall into them and then often cause operating disturbances, or even stoppages of the watch after unpredictable periods, that is to say even after the watch has been subjected to ex-factory checks, which is inadmissible for a quality watch.
The object of the present invention is to provide a waterproof watch with a stainless steel back and a composite caseband which does not have the drawback mentioned.
For this, the box according to the invention is characterized in that the inner ring is made of a metal having a hardness at least approximately equal to that of the bottom and in that the outer body is made of another softer metal.
By using, for example, a stainless steel ring, this box is closed under exactly the same conditions as boxes made entirely of stainless steel and about which the above-mentioned drawback has never been noted. Another grade of steel can also be used for said ring.
It suffices for the tapping of the latter to resist the bottom threads, when the latter is locked in place.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
When the body of the box is made of brass or nickel silver, the method, object of the invention, which can be used to manufacture it, which is characterized in that in order to permanently fix said steel ring to said body, said ring is placed on a punch when it already has all the projections intended to fix it axially and angularly to said body, and in that one strikes with this punch and said ring on a piece of material intended to form said body and placed after having been previously heated at the hot forging temperature,
in a die, the shape of which is at least an outline of that of the caseband of the case.
In this way, the protrusion (s) of the steel ring are automatically coated, during the strike, in the material of the middle body.
In order to form the projections of said ring, which serve to fix it axially and angularly to said body, a ring is preferably cut from a strip, then this ring is cold struck in a die having said recessed projections.
The drawing shows schematically and by way of example two embodiments of the box according to claim I and it illustrates an example of implementation of the method according to claim II.
Fig. 1 is a diametral section of the first embodiment; fig. 2, a partial diametral section of the second embodiment; fig. 3, a section illustrating a step of the exemplary implementation of the method, and FIG. 4, a section illustrating another step of this example.
The case according to the first embodiment (fig. 1) comprises a middle part composed of a body 1 in nickel silver and an inner ring 2 in stainless steel. The shape of the body 1 is chosen so that all the visible parts of the caseband, when the case is closed, are located on this body 1, which can be subjected to a galvanic treatment to improve its surface and thus obtain a plated caseband. , chrome or nickel plated.
The ring 2 is permanently fixed to the body 1 both axially and angularly. To ensure the axial fixing of the ring 2 to the body 1, the latter has a frustoconical external projection 3 which opens on the glass side of the box. As for the angular fixing of the ring 2 to the body 1, this is provided by at least one nose (not shown) projecting from the frustoconical face 3 of the ring 2.
The middle part (1, 2) has a cylindrical opening 4 which extends through the body 1 and the ring 2 and which is intended to receive a tube (not shown) to ensure, on the one hand, the passage of the rod winding and setting the time of the movement 5 and, on the other hand, the sealing of this passage by cooperating for this with a crown fixed to said stem and carrying a sealing gasket. The horns 6 have come from manufacture in one piece with the body 1 to ensure the attachment of a bracelet to the case.
An annular housing 7, formed in the upper internal corner of the body 1 acts as a notch and a glass 8 is fixed to the middle part (1, 2) by its peripheral rim 9, which is engaged in the housing 7 and compressed. against the side wall of this housing by a tension ring 10. The ring 2 extends vertically inside the body 1 through the entire space in which the opening 4 is made. The upper face of this ring is however not visible. It. Is covered by a thin flange 11 of the body 1, the face of which visible through the rim 9 of the glass can be surface treated in the same way as the other visible parts of the body 1.
The inside of the ring 2 has a shoulder 12 serving as a support for the thread 13 of the plate of the movement 5. An internal thread 14 is formed in the lower part of the internal wall of the ring 2. This internal thread 14 is intended to receive a threaded sleeve 15 with a bottom 16, which serves to close the box in the usual way. To resist the effects of perspiration without irritating the skin, the bottom 16 is made of stainless steel. The seal between the back 16 and the caseband (1, 2) is sealed by a gasket 17, of circular profile, housed in an annular space 18 of approximately square profile, formed in part in the lower internal angle of the body 1 and extending around the ring 2.
The bottom 16 has a peripheral rim 19 which extends outside the sleeve 15 and which bears axially on the lining 17.
Because the stainless steel bottom of the box is not screwed into a soft metal part, but in a part also made of stainless steel, the net cut around the sleeve 15 of the bottom is not likely to remove particles material of the thread in which it is engaged.
Instead of the axial fixing of the ring 2 in the body 1 is ensured by a frustoconical projection of this ring coated in the body 1, it could also be ensured in the way shown in the second embodiment (fig. 2). . In this second embodiment, of which only the middle part is shown, a stainless steel ring 2a is permanently fixed to the nickel silver body 1a by a peripheral rim 20 which is coated by the body 1a, which thus prevents the ring 2a from move axially relative to the body 1a.
The angular fixing of the ring 2a in the body 1a can be ensured as in the first embodiment by one or more radial noses of the ring 2a. However, it can also be provided by one or more notches made in the rim 20, before the engagement of the latter in the body 1a.
Instead of ensuring the axial fixing of the outer body of the middle part and of the inner steel ring in the manner shown in one or the other of the two embodiments described, it could also be ensured by a projection. peripheral of the steel ring, located halfway up the latter and having an approximately semicircular profile or by two end projections of the steel ring delimiting a peripheral profile groove approximately
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
semicircular.
In each of these cases, it would obviously still be necessary to ensure the angular fixing of the steel ring in the outer body of the caseband by radial noses of said ring or by notches made in the peripheral projection (s) of the ring, before these projections are not embedded in the outer body of the middle part.
In general, the axial and angular fixing of the steel ring in the outer body of the middle part can be provided by projections of any shape on the outer face of the ring. Thus, four protuberances distributed around this ring, for example in the vicinity of the strap fixing horns, could ensure at the same time the axial fixing and the angular fixing of the steel ring to the outer body of the middle part.
In choosing the shape and location of the protrusions of the steel ring, it suffices to ensure that these protrusions do not oppose the drill intended for drilling the opening 4 for the tube ensuring the passage of the winding and setting stem. per hour, a resistance that could deflect this bit and cause it to break. This is also the reason why it is advisable to choose a steel ring, the upper face of which is not located at a level included in the field of passage 4, but is clearly above it.
Instead of a nickel silver middle body, one could also choose one in brass, aluminum or injected cast iron. In these last two cases, the projections of the steel ring intended to ensure the axial and angular attachment of this ring to the middle body could be embedded in the latter at the time of molding or injection, by placing the steel ring in the corresponding mold before bringing therein the material of the outer body of the middle part.
If this is made of injected cast iron, it can be improved in surface by gilding and if it is made of aluminum or an aluminum alloy, it can be improved in surface by anodic oxidation.
In the case where the outer body of the middle part is made of brass or nickel silver, the steel ring is advantageously fixed to this body by the method illustrated in FIG. 3.
According to this method, which refers to the box according to the first embodiment, a blank 2b of the steel ring 2 is placed on the punch 21 of a stamping press. The outer face of this blank 2b is prepared so as to present all the projections intended to fix this ring to the outer body of the middle part. Given that these projections are embedded in said body and that they have no other purpose than to ensure the final fixing of the two parts of the middle part to each other, they do not need to present high precision. On the other hand, the internal face of the blank 2b is rough.
However, it is given an inclination of about 5, on the one hand, to ensure easy and safe positioning of this blank 2b on the punch 21 and, on the other hand, to allow the punch 21 to easily come free of the ring 2b after stamping. As this takes place hot, it is advantageous to preheat the blank 2b before placing it on the punch 21, to prevent it from falling from this punch before the striking operation as a result of expansion.
Preheating the blank 2b to 200 ° C., for a striking temperature of 780-8001) C., has proved sufficient. At the same time as the blank 2b is placed in the manner described on the punch 21, a piece of mesh 22, in the form of a cylinder, is planted in the middle of the bottom of a die 23 after having been heated, by for example, by induction at striking temperature (780-800 C). This slug 22 is then crushed in the die 23 by the punch 21 carrying the ring blank 2b.
During this operation, the material of the slug 22 flows in all directions and thus fills all the gaps left free by the punch 21 and the ring blank 2b inside the die 23. In this way, the projections described on the outer face of the ring 2b are automatically embedded in the material which has flowed from the billet 22. Due to the malleability of the material of the billet 22, when the latter has been heated to the temperature indicated above, it is advisable to give the die 23 a shape which constitutes at least a blank of the final outer shape of this middle part.
The die 23 will thus advantageously have four recesses (not shown) intended to form blanks for the horns 6.
During the striking operation, the punch 21 and the ring 2b do not descend to the bottom of the die 23, so that between the end faces of the punch 21 and the blank 2b a veil of the material of the piece 22. After striking, we can start by cutting this veil. To complete the part obtained, it suffices to submit it to the same machining operations as a middle part made entirely of nickel silver, as regards the outer faces of the body 1, and to the same machining operations as a middle part made entirely stainless steel, as regards the faces, inner and lower, of the stainless steel ring.
To complete the part thus shaped, it suffices to subject it further to the treatment intended to improve the outer surface of the body 1. To manufacture the blank 2b of the steel ring, one proceeds advantageously in the manner illustrated in FIG. 4. For this purpose, we begin by cutting a ring 2c of a strip of material, this ring therefore having faces, internal and external, cylindrical. This cold ring is then placed in a die 24 having a central core 25.
To shape the outer face of the blank 2b, the die 24 has an annular housing 26 with a frustoconical wall, as well as recesses 27 in a few places distributed around the periphery of the housing 26, these recesses 27 being intended to form the projections ensuring the angular fixing of the steel ring to the outer body of the caseband. The core 25 likewise has a frustoconical wall 28 to form the internal face of the blank 2b intended to be engaged on the punch 21.
The ring 2c is then crushed by a punch 29 having a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
annular projection 30, in the annular housing extending in the die 24 around the core 25.
As the ring 2c must not undergo a significant deformation to produce the blank 2b, a single cold forming operation is generally sufficient for this purpose.
After the strike, the core 25 functions as an extractor, by means of known means (not shown) and causes the stamped piece to come out of the die 24.
The blank 2b obtained following the cold forging operation described has surfaces, external and internal, rough, which facilitates both the mounting of the blank 2b on the punch 21 and the final fixing of this blank. 2b to the outer body of the middle, following the hot forging operation.
