Device for guiding and centering a bar in an automatic lathe The present invention relates to a device for guiding and centering a bar in an automatic lathe, comprising an axially split barrel, constituting jaws acting on said bar, and a tubular frame in which said barrel is slidably engaged, this frame having a seat with which cooperates a bearing surface of the split part of said barrel.
In known guide devices, the clamping of the jaws is generally effected by means of a screw pressing the bearing surface of the jaws against the generally conical seat of the frame. This tightening, which is carried out manually, requires a certain experience and a certain dexterity on the part of the operator so that the bar is maintained with gentle friction in the guiding and centering device. In addition,. If the bar has irregularities, it may get stuck or on the contrary start to play too freely in the guide device.
The aim of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks.
The device according to the invention is characterized by an elastic device acting on the barrel to apply said bearing surface thereof against the seat so as to produce a clamping of constant value of the jaws on the bar.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of a device which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an axial section.
Fig. 2 is an axial section of a detail, and FIG. 3 is an end view of this detail, on an enlarged scale.
The guiding and centering device shown comprises a tubular frame 1 intended to be fixed on the frame of an automatic lathe (stripper) not shown. This frame encloses a guide and centering barrel 2 having slots 3 over part of its length, and slidably mounted inside an intermediate sleeve 4; the latter slides in the frame 1.
A screw 5, taking in the frame 1, engages in a longitudinal groove 6 of the sleeve 4, to prevent it from turning on itself, while a screw 7, taking in the intermediate sleeve 4, enters a longitudinal groove 8 of the barrel 2 to prevent it from rotating in the sleeve.
The sleeve 4 carries, screwed into its rear end, a tube 9 terminated by a control head 9a allowing the sleeve 4 to be moved manually inside the frame 1. A coil spring 10, mounted on the tube 9, is supported on the one hand on the rear end of the sleeve 4 and on the other hand on the frame 1, by means of a ring 11, screwed into the frame 1, and which is integral with a control head 11a allowing it to be rotated. By screwing the ring 11 more or less into the frame 1, the tension of the spring 10 is modified.
This spring 10 tends to apply a tronconi seat 12 that has the front end of the sleeve 4 against a bearing surface 13, also frustoconical, of the guide barrel 2, thus moving this barrel to the left of FIG. 1 and tending to apply a second frustoconical bearing surface of this barrel, designated by 14, against a frustoconical seat 15 which the frame 1 has at its anterior end.
Thus, the spring 10 tends to close, by the combined action of the surfaces 12 and 13, on the one hand, and 14 and 15 on the other hand, the jaws 2a of the barrel 2 separated by the. slots 3 of the latter.
It should be noted that the anterior part of these jaws is provided with a cylindrical gasket 16 split at 17 over its entire length, welded to the jaws of the barrel, and which is made of a metal harder than that of the latter. When a bar to be machined using the automatic lathe on which the device shown is mounted is engaged in the tube 9 and in the barrel 2, the pressure of the spring 10 is adjusted, by rotating the head 11a of the ring 11,
so that the jaws 2a exert a friction on the bar which just allows it to rotate and slide in the barrel.
Thanks to the present device, the pressure of the jaws 2a on the bar remains substantially constant, even if the bar has slight irregularities. This pressure can also be adjusted according to the work to be performed and according to the material of the bar to be machined.
The device is released manually by acting on the head 9a of the tube 9 to move the barrel 2 to the right of FIG. 1, against the action of the spring 10.
