No 2711627).

Process for crimping yarns based on thermoplastic polymers, yarn obtained by this process and use of this yarn When the various artificial and then synthetic fibers have successively appeared on the market, attempts have been made for many applications to give them a reminiscent of wool as much as possible, giving them a crimp which increases their apparent volume and at the same time gives them a more pleasant feel.
Several processes designed for this purpose have received applications on an industrial scale.
The oldest of these processes consists in subjecting thermoplastic continuous yarns to over-twisting, thermal fixing and then untwisting, the rest of these operations being able to be carried out continuously if the so-called false-twisting technique is used. .
Very swelling, highly elastic yarns are obtained, one drawback of which is to have a torque which causes distortion of the articles made from these yarns, unless an assembly of two yarns which have been subjected to their over-twists in the opposite direction to each other.
In another process which also gives very elastic threads, heated thermoplastic threads are passed over a sharp edge, by imposing a path on them at an acute angle, the top of which is on the edge.
The high elasticity of these two types of yarn, which is advantageous in certain uses, turns out to be an inconvenient when they are used in certain clothing fields such as sweaters in particular, where until now wool has mainly been used for articles. of satisfactory appearance.
An attempt has therefore been made to limit the elasticity of the threads which have undergone the operations of over-twisting, fixing and untwisting, possibly carried out continuously by false-twisting, by subsequently subjecting them to a heat treatment under a controlled tension so as to adjust the degree. of final elasticity.
There is also known a method of manufacturing an extensible yarn, which can be used in particular for the making of stockings and underwear which does not show any distortion while having a dia phane appearance, and which consists in lining a polyamide yarn, having undergone a treatment of twisting, fixing and de-twisting by means of a transient yarn (silk for example) which is removed by chemical dissolution after knitting (see US Pat. No. 2711627).
A process is also known which gives swelling threads with reduced elasticity, which consists in piling up threads under pressure in an enclosure where a fixing agent such as water vapor is sent. So far, this technique has not given sufficiently consistent results. treated yarns often showing differences in tinctorial affinity.
There is yet another process aimed at the preparation of bulky yarns and according to which multi-stranded yarns are passed through a current of compressed air driven by a vortex movement (see example Australian Patent No. 221733). Rather than a real crimp, this treatment causes the formation of small curls on the individual filaments. If two or more threads are treated in parallel, it is possible, by modifying the relative speeds of these threads, as well as the other operating conditions, to obtain various effects.
Among these effect yarns, there is one which is commonly called chenille yarn and which comprises one or more peripheral yarns forming elongated and tufted loops anchored in a substantially rectilinear support yarn. Among all the variety of fancy yarns obtained by this latter type of process, there is none that can be compared to wool in appearance and feel.
The present invention relates to a process for crimping yarns based on thermoplastic polymers, characterized in that a composite yarn of the chenille type is formed by simultaneously subjecting at least two yarns to the action of a current of compressible fluid animated in a circular movement, at least one of these threads being a peripheral thread based on thermoplastic polymer and the remainder being at least one support thread,
in that the peripheral wire is thermally fixed by means of said fluid or by a subsequent treatment, and in that, after said thermal fixing, the peripheral wire, which constitutes the crimped wire, is dissociated from with the support wire longed for.
In a preferred embodiment, the chenille yarn is prepared by the action of a stream of a compressible and plasticizing fluid, such as a stream of pressurized water vapor, which so simultaneously causes the fixing of the yarn.
The crimped yarn obtained by the process according to the invention has, over those which were known hitherto, various advantages - the crimping is anarchic, without periodicity. There is no danger of phase crimping between two strands or two juxtaposed strands (unlike what often happens when the strands are crimped by tamping in a compression chamber), because the crimp of each strand is complete. ment different from that of the neighboring strand.
- the yarn is devoid of residual twisting torque and results in articles free from distortion (unlike yarns crimped by over-twisting, fixing and untwisting).
This method is applicable to the crimping of all thermoplastic yarns having sufficient strength to withstand, without breaking, the action of the stream of compressed fluid. Such are in particular synthetic yarns based on polyamides, polyesters, polyolefins, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl derivatives, etc.
For the manufacture of chenille yarn, the apparatus ordinarily used is a compressed fluid nozzle of a type known per se. The auxiliary core yarn (support yarn) and the crimping yarn (peripheral yarn) are introduced simultaneously from two independent delivery rolls. The chenille yarn is then fed back once it has left the nozzle. The core yarn is fed at a speed slightly higher (5 to 15%) than the winding speed of the chenille yarn. The crimping yarn, which constitutes the peripheral or effect yarn of the chenille yarn, is delivered at a speed which can be notably greater than that of the winding (10 to 5000%).
The choice of the operating conditions influences the fineness of the crimping, the ease of subsequent unwinding and the productivity of the overall process (this is directly proportional to the web speed born of the peripheral wire which is the wire to be crimped). Good results have been obtained with feed speeds of 100-400 m / minute for the crimping yarn, and take-up speeds of 5-30 m / minute for the chenille yarn.
As for the pressure of the compressed fluid, it is most often 4 to 7.5 kg / cm? in the case of air (these figures, however, cannot be considered as limiting). If steam is used, the productivity of the apparatus is increased, since high pressures of the fluid used in the manufacture of chenille yarn are easier to obtain with steam than with water. air, beyond a certain value. However, these high pressures make it possible to operate with significantly higher wire passage speeds.
The choice of the core yarn is made taking into account that this yarn is not recovered at the end of the treatment. The percentage by weight of this core yarn in the chenille yarn will therefore be reduced as much as possible, for reasons of economy. It can be as low as 0.5 to 1%.
If the chenille yarn has been prepared by the action of compressed air, it is necessary to subject it to an intermediate fixing which can be carried out by any suitable technique.
For example, steaming at variable temperature was used depending on the nature of the yarn. If, in this preparation of chenille yarn, the air has been replaced by a plasticizing fluid such as water vapor, subsequent fixing is completely superfluous, which has a certain number of practical advantages; first of all, that of reducing to two the number of distinct operations involved in the manufacture of crimped yarn. In addition, the elimination of the intermediate steaming of the chenille yarn also entails that of the risks of yellowing, which are difficult to avoid during a heat treatment of any duration.
The unwinding, that is to say the dissociation of the core wire and the peripheral wire and the recovery of the latter in the form of crimped wire, can be carried out by various methods. Mention may be made, for example, of dissolving the auxiliary core yarn (this is the case in particular when this yarn is made of cellulose acetate or polyvinyl alcohol).
- Melting of the core wire, when the latter has a relatively low PF (polyethylene for example).
- mechanical process causing, by traction, the breakage of the core yarn, which forms short strands which can be separated for example by electrostatic means or which are eliminated by themselves during subsequent textile treatments .
The crimped yarn obtained can be used as it is, as has been said, for the manufacture of textile articles free of distortions. However, it is understood that one can assemble two or more of these yarns, for example by milling, without particular precautions, which leads to yarns, surprisingly resembling wool to be knitted.
It is possible, if desired, to further reduce or increase the elasticity of the crimped yarn, by subjecting it to a heat treatment with or without tension as the case may be.
Table I below summarizes the results obtained in a whole series of tests in which the fluid used during the preparation of the chenille yarn was compressed air. The nature of the crimping yarn, that of the auxiliary core yarn, as well as the operating conditions used in the manufacture of the chenille yarn, that is to say,
according to the abbreviations in the table P = the pressure of the compressed fluid in kg / ce VDt = the feed speed of the core wire in m / minute VD2 = the feed speed of the wire to be crimped in m / minute VR = the winding speed of the chenille yarn in m / minute.
With regard to the nature of the treated yarns, the meaning of the abbreviations is as follows PA = polyhexamethylene-adipamide Ac = cellulose acetate PP = polypropylene (The figures appearing after these symbols each time indicate the title of the yarn and its number of strands ).

The chenille yarns being here received in a rotating pot, the winding speed is substantially equal to the speed of passage of the core yarn.
As regards the nature of the treated yarns, the meaning of the abbreviations is as follows PA = polyhexamethylene-adipamide. PVA = polyvinyl alcohol.
PP = polypropylene. (The numbers after these symbols each time indicate the thread title, number of strands and twist).

Example 32 shows that steam under 11 kg / cm2, which is not more expensive than air under 7-8 kg / cm, allows compared to the latter, to double the speed of passage of the wire to be crimped .
It should also be remembered that the chenille yarn obtained in Examples 31 and 32 by the action of steam does not require, unlike that of Example 30, treated with air, any intermediate fixing before the dissociation of the peripheral yarn. with the soul thread.
