La machine à pratiquer des fentes représentée comprend: un bâti 15 ; un dispositif 16 d'amenée de rivets porté par le bâti ; une tourelle 17 recevant les rivets ; un dispositif 18 pour commander l'amenée des rivets à la tourelle ; un dispositif 19 pour faire tourner la tourelle 17 par intermittence afin de faire avancer en succession les rivets qu'elle porte ; un dispositif 20 pour maintenir les rivets dans leurs logements de manière à les empêcher de tourner ;
Machine for splitting rivets The present invention relates to a machine for splitting rivets at their end, comprising a turret moved angularly intermittently and comprising a number of housings spaced apart peripherally for the rivets intended to be split, a device on one side. of the turret, to bring a rivet into one of these housings during a period of stopping the turret,
a common carriage which is arranged on the other side of the turret and driven by a reciprocating movement bringing it closer to and away from the turret and on which a device is mounted for slitting a rivet in its housing during a period of stopping the turret, and, a device for dislodging, during the same stopping period, a split rivet from another housing.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine according to the invention. Fig. 1 is a side elevational view, broken away, of the slitting machine of this embodiment.

Fig. 7 is a vertical section made by VII-VII of the fi-. 4.
Fig. 8 is an end view of the device machining the slots; this view being a section taken by VIII-VIII of FIG. 4.
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary, large-scale plan sectional view illustrating the slitting device associated with operation with rivets, and the method of slitting the rivets.
Fig. 10 is a perspective view on an even larger scale of a rivet having cross slots.
The slitting machine shown comprises: a frame 15; a device 16 for feeding rivets carried by the frame; a turret 17 receiving the rivets; a device 18 for controlling the feed of the rivets to the turret; a device 19 for rotating the turret 17 intermittently in order to advance in succession the rivets which it carries; a device 20 for maintaining the rivets in their housings so as to prevent them from turning;
a device 21 for driving the rivet feed device 18; a locking device 22 for immobilizing the control device between successive phases of supplying rivets; a head 23 for making the slits; a device 24 for driving this head; a device 25 for advancing and re-peeling the head relative to the turret 17 in synchronism with the intermittent movement of the turret; finally, a device 26 for dislodging the split rivets from the turret during each advance movement of the head 23 making the slits.
It can be seen that the frame 15 comprises a bench 30 to which are attached respective end supports 31 and 32, the first of which serves to support the drive device of the slitting machine and the second of which serves to support the slitting machine. machine parts.
As can be seen more clearly in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, the support 31 carries the born web device 16 and is provided with a cover 33 which encloses parts of the driving device. Rather similarly, the support 32 is provided with a cover 34 which encloses the devices 19 and 20 as well as the locking device 22 of the working end of the slitting machine.
The supports 31 and 32 are vertical and longitudinally spaced apart. As can be seen more clearly in fig. 1, these supports are connected by a bar 35 which extends between a boss 36 of the support 31 and a boss 37 formed on a hub 38 fixed to the support 32 and extending in the direction of the support 31.
The device for feeding rivets 16 is of conventional general construction. It is constituted here by a circular hopper 39 which is mounted on an adjustable support 40 and comprises a device driven by a motor 41 for unloading rivets R from this hopper onto a slide 42. These rivets are all oriented in the same way when 'they leave this chute and enter a vertical guide 43. Therefore, as seen in FIGS. 4 and 7, the rivets are arranged one above the other and are spaced apart by their heads 44 of larger diameter, and their shanks 45 all extend in the same direction, in this case towards the end machine drive.
The turret 17 comprises a crown 46 for view of a series of housings 47 symmetrically arranged on a circumference (FIG. 7). In the present case, eight units have been provided in a regular octagon arrangement. Although eight housings are preferred, four or any multiplied by four can be provided, so that at any time two housings are mutually perpendicular to the geometric axis of the aforementioned crown.
Said geometric axis coincides with the longitu dinal axis of a shaft 48 on which the crown of the turret is mounted and which comprises bearings mounted respectively in the support 32 and the hub 38, bearings which are constituted by bearings 49 and 50 in which this tree turns.
As can be seen in fig. 7 and 9, clearance slots 51 are formed in the face of the turret ring 46 which is oriented towards the slot head, and the slots are arranged to receive saws or discs 52 forming the slots which are carried by the slit forming head 23.
The device 18 (fig. 7) controlling the feed of the rivets comprises an escapement mechanism 53 which is driven by an element 54 from a rotating shaft 55, and conveyor screws 56 which receive the rivets released by the mechanism. exhaust 53 and which are driven by a graining train 57 from this shaft 55.
The escapement mechanism 53 is constituted by a transverse slide 58 which is driven in a reciprocating motion by a crank and a rod 59 by means of the shaft 55. The slide 58 comprises two blades, upper 60 and lower rivet release 61, which during each complete back and forth movement of the slide intermittently release a rivet from the chute 43, to drop it first onto the lower blade 61 and then onto the conveyor screws 56.
Three conveyor screws 56, which form a channel or trough receive the rivets, as can be seen in fig. 4. Each screw is machined so as to include a helical groove intended to receive the heads 44 of the rivets, so that their tails 45 are oriented towards the crown of the turret and are aligned with one of the housings 47 of this crown. The pitch of the screws 56 and their respective rotations are such that a rivet is advanced with the tail forward in the direction of the aligned housing 47.
It is obvious that this advance pushes a rivet into the crown of the turret so that its tail extends beyond the opposite face of this crown, as illustrated in FIGS. 1, 4 and 9, and that the head 44 of this rivet comes flush with the near face of the turret crown and is released from the ends of the conveyor screws 56.
The device 19 for intermittent angular displacement of the turret is illustrated in FIGS. 4 and 6. It comprises a drive shaft 62 driven continuously in rotation by means of a gear train 63, by a pulley 64 which is driven in rotation by a motor (not shown), thanks to a belt. 65. This drive shaft 62 extends between the supports 31 and 32 and rotates in bearings mounted therein. A wheel 66 wedged on this shaft is mounted in the cover 34 and comprises a toothed portion 67 which, on each revolution of the shaft 62, advances the shaft 48 by a fraction of a turn.
A Maltese cross wheel 68, wedged on the shaft 48, cooperates with the wheel 66, depending on the number of concave seats that it comprises, and advances said fraction of a turn. Because the turret crown has eight rivet housings 47, wheel 68 has eight concave seats 69 and is advanced 1/9 of a turn for each full revolution of shaft 62.
During this intermittent rotation of the turret ring 46, the rivets which it carries are advanced angularly intermittently, by 450 each time, around the geometric axis of the shaft 48. As a result, this rivet rotates theoretically around this axis according to an orbital movement. So that the rivet cannot be caused to rotate on its own geometric axis, in particular following the execution of the slots or if its shank is placed in the housing 47 with a certain play, the positive device 20 is provided .
This comprises a shoe or shoe 70, concentric with the circumference on which the housings 47 are arranged and comprising a sharp edge 71 which rubs against the heads 44 of the rivets and is embedded therein slightly under the stress of one or more if springs 72 which push the pad 70 outwardly.
As a result, the rivets move on the pad which is otherwise fixed and cannot rotate axially. Since any point on the periphery of the shank of a rivet is thus progressively displaced around the geometric axis of the shaft 38 by intermittent displacements equal to 45, this point is displaced twice or over 90 between points or stations 73 and 74. Consequently, if two diametrically opposed points are arranged vertically at station 73, they will be arranged horizontally at station 74, and two points arranged at 90- of these are located vertically at this last post.
Although the device 19 for rotating the turret is self-locking to immobilize the shaft 48 during the continuous rotation of the shaft 62, it is preferred to provide an additional locking capable of avoiding wear and / or play. parts of the machine which would tend to allow a detrimental displacement of the turret crown during its stopping periods. For this purpose, the positive locking device 22 has been provided which comprises a wheel 75 with notches 77 fixed with the Maltese cross wheel 68 to the shaft 48, a finger being able to penetrate into the notches 77 of the wheel 75, a cam roller 78 carried by an arm 79 of this finger, and a cam 80 fixed with the wheel 66 to the shaft 62.
It is easy to understand that the finger and its arm pivot at 81, and that the cam 80 is designed so as to push the finger into locking contact with the wheel 75 during the period of immobilization of the turret crown, which keeps said crown locked and fixed during the continuous rotation of the shaft 62.
The device 21 driving the device 18 for feeding the rivets is also actuated from the shaft 62. The device 21 comprises a gear train 82 which connects the shaft 62 and the aforementioned shaft 55. The latter s 'extends from support 32 and is connected to gear train 57 to continuously drive it and escapement mechanism 54 reciprocating.
It can be seen that the head 23 making the slots com carries a housing 83 in which is mounted a transverse shaft 84, on the ends of which are mounted two similar saws 52 mentioned above. These saws are transversely spaced according to the transverse spacing of the stations 73 and 74 of the turret head, and the geometric axis of the shaft 84 and of these saws is located at these stations. Thus, when the saws are rotated at high speed and are moved so that their edge penetrates the ends of the rivets at stations 73 and 74, these rivet ends or shanks will be split. It is clear that in the rivet at station 73 is machined the first slot and that in the rivet which is at station 74 is machined the second slot or cross slot.
The shaft 84 is driven in rotation by a longitudinal shaft 85 by means of a gear device 86 with inclined teeth, and a sleeve 87 which is disposed around the shaft 85 supports the casing 83. So that this casing does not cannot rotate in order to maintain the saws in their vertical arrangement shown, sleeves 88 and 89 placed on a fitting 90 coaxially engaged around the sleeve 87 hold this housing in position.
A conical ring 91 mounted in the connector 90 locks the latter to the sleeve 87 after the latter has been adjusted as desired in the longitudinal direction, whereby the stroke or reciprocation of the head forms the slots can begin and end in an appropriate relation with the crown 46 of the turret. Because the shaft 85 rotates at a high speed to give a high cutting speed to the saws 52, it has been mounted in the bearings 92 at each end of the sleeve 87.
The device 24 driving the shaft 85 is constituted by a pulley 93 mounted on the end of this shaft, the belt 94 of the pulley 93 being driven by a motor (not shown) and extending rearwardly through a opening the cover 33.
The saws are, as described above, continuously rotated at high speed, and their geometric axes are maintained on a horizontal line transverse to the shank ends of two rivets where slots are simultaneously cut.
As it appears from the fi-. 3 and 4, the device 25 for animating the slits execution head with a reciprocating movement between a slits execution position and an inoperative position is mounted on the same common carriage as the head 23 making the slits. As shown, this device 25 is constituted by a cam 95 disposed around the sleeve 87 and fixed to the connector 90 and, through the intermediary of the ring 91, to the sleeve 87, by a cam roller 96 disposed in the groove 97. of the cam, and by a rotating drum 98 which supports the cam roller and is provided with a sleeve extension 99 around the sleeve 87.
This sleeve extension is carried by the support 31 by means of bearings 100 and 101 which, although not shown in detail, can absorb radial and axial thrust characteristics which reduce the end and rotational loads exerted. on the support 31 by the device 24. The drum cannot move longitudinally, because its face 102 bears against the bearing 100 and that a thrust ring 103 provided on the extension 99 bears against the bearing 101.
The rotation of the drum 98 and of its cam roller 96 to drive the head forming the slots back and forth is effected by two pinions 104 which connect the shaft 62 and the sleeve extension 99. These pinions have the same number of teeth and thus rotate the drum 98 with each revolution of the wheel 66. Therefore, for each complete reciprocation of the head 23 forming the slots, the head of the turret is moved from '/ d turn.
The device 26 dislodging the rivets is illustrated in FIGS. 1, 5 and 8. It comprises a radial arm 105 mounted on the casing 83 of the head forming the slots, a bearing 106 provided on the end of the arm, and a plunger 107 biased by a spring. , plunger which is carried by this bearing and has an end 108 oriented towards a station 109 of the crown 46 of the turret. This station is the one immediately in front of the loading station at the top of the turret, but it can be any station between the station 74 and the loading station.
Since the end 108 of the plunger easily fits into the housings 47, it is evident that whenever the slit head is moved to its slit execution position, said slit head end 108 pushes back the protruding tail of a rivet that has been split crosswise to release it from its housing and drop it into a chute which can be placed between the turret crown and support 32.
