Coupling of vehicles of a convoy intended to be pushed The present invention relates to a coupling of a vehicle of a convoy intended to be pushed, in particular of a convoy of boats, intended more specifically for river or maritime navigation.
The convoys of pushed boats used at the present time are rigid, that is to say of modifiable shape under the influence of mechanisms internal to the boats of the convoy which allow only small elastic deformations under the action of external forces. In certain embodiments of pushed convoys of modifiable shape, a pusher rotating freely around a hinge placed at the rear of each boat is used, the rudder of the boat receiving the thrust of this pusher. If, in the latter case, the rig is stable in direction, it is not the same in the other cases, for it then has a clear tendency to bend unless the relative position of two successive boats does not. or fixed by undeformable geometric elements.
With a view to remedying the aforementioned drawbacks, the present invention relates to a coupling of vehicles of a convoy intended to be pushed, charac terized by the fact that it comprises, between two successive vehicles of the convoy, a steering body arranged in the coincident longitudinal planes of symmetry of the vehicles when they are aligned, movable relative to each vehicle longitudinally and able to pivot in horizontal and vertical planes,
a means for transmitting thrust between these two vehicles and devices for increasing the distance between vehicles respectively carried by the two vehicles and on which this means for transmitting thrust acts, each device for increasing the distance and said steering member acting mutually one on the other and being relatively movable with respect to each other, the whole being arranged, on the one hand, so that said governing body undergoes,
for any angular deviation of the previous vehicle under the influence of deviating forces with respect to the other vehicle, an angular deviation in the opposite direction and a longitudinal displacement producing an increase in the distance between the two vehicles and, further hand, so that, during such an angular deviation, the distance increasing devices apply to said steering organ a righting torque which tends, as soon as these deviating forces disappear, to align these two vehicles by bringing them closer to their initial distance.
In the following description, embodiments of the coupling forming the subject of the invention will be described by way of examples and with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Fig. 19 represents the appearance of a convoy of pushed boats equipped with curving devices, when passing S-curves in a river.
Figs. 20 and 21 show schematically the forces applied to a deviated boat, respectively in the case of a usual coupling and of a coupling according to an embodiment of the invention.
In the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 3, the two successive boats 1 and 2 moving in the direction of the arrow F are provided, near their adjacent edges, with vertical pivots 3 and 4 on which are pivotally mounted yokes 5 and 6 provided with pins horizontals 7 and 8 on which are articulated two gutters 9 and 10 in which smooth neck a bar 11 constituting both a steering member and a thrust transmission means.
The ends of the bar 11 are capped by yokes 12 and 13 which can pivot freely around this bar. These yokes carry at their ends rollers 14 and 15 which roll on vertical cam surfaces 16 and 17 substantially V-shaped that have parts 18 and 19 fixed to boats 1 and 2 and constituting distance increasing devices between the boats. These cam surfaces, arranged symmetrically with respect to the longitudinal planes of symmetry of the boats, have their vertices directed towards the centers of the boats.
The points of their profiles are located at decreasing distances from the axes of pivots 3 and 4 from the top of V.
If, under the action of external forces, the boat 1 deviates from the boat 2 by pivoting towards the boat, as shown in fig. 3, the steering bar 11 tilts with respect to the longitudinal axes of the two boats, causing the gutters 9 and 10 to pivot around the pivots 3 and 4 resulting from the mutual axis of the bar 11 and the cam surfaces 16 and 17, which gives the bar 11, with respect to each of the boats 1 and 2, an angular deviation in the opposite direction to that of each of these boats with respect to the other. The distances between the axes of the rollers 14 and 15 and the axes of the corresponding pivots 3 and 4 decrease, which causes the convoy to lengthen.
The reactions of the cam surfaces 16 and 17 on the rollers 14 and 15 generated by the thrust create a torque on the bar 11, which tends to bring the two gutters 9 and 10 back into alignment with the axes of the boats and, consequently, to rearrange the convoy while shortening the hitch. The pivoting of the yokes 12 and 13 on the bar 11 and the movements of this bar in the longitudinal vertical planes of symmetry of the gutters 9 and 10 allow the relative movements of two boats due to the roll and to the pitch.
In the embodiment of the coupling between boats 20 and 21 illustrated in FIGS. 4 to 6, a gutter 22 carrying two arms 23 and 23a opposite and provided with a deep groove in which a guide bar 24 moves is mounted on the pushed boat 20. The arms 23 and 23a are articulated on two levers 25 and < I> 25a articulated in turn at 26 and 26a on the boat and forming part of the distance increasing device.
These arms carry at their ends pulleys 27 and 27a on which is wound a cable 28 which passes over a central double return pulley 29, fixed to the boat, and over two return pulleys 30 and 30a also fixed to the boat. to end in supports 31 and 31a fixed to the ends of two lateral push bars 32 and 32a provided with buffers 33 and 33a and guided by bearings 34.
On the pusher boat 21 is mounted a cra paudine 35 in which pivots a gutter 36 provided with two opposite arms 37 and 37a and having a deep groove in which the steering bar 24 can move. The arms 37 37a carry two chains 38 and 38a. acting as flexible connecting rods which can be deformed in the direction of their reduction in length and joined to a slide 39 movable longitudinally with respect to the boat in a smooth neck 40.
On the slider 39 is fixed a cable 41 which winds on a pulley 42 whose pivot 43 fixed to the boat serves at the same time as a pivot for a grooved cam 44 with a spiral arc profile, integral with the pulley 42 ( Fig. 7) to play with it the role of distance increasing device and serving for winding a cable 45 coupled to a block 46 comprising a double pulley 47 fixed to the boat and acting as a second distance increasing device.
A cable 48 is wound on this block 46 and from there on two return pulleys 49 and 49a also fixed on the boat to end in supports 50 and 50a fixed at the ends of push bars 51 and 51a provided with buffers 52 and 52a.
If, under the action of external forces, the boat 20 deviates from the boat 21 by pivoting towards port, as shown in FIG. 6, the guide bar 24 tilts relative to the two boats. On the boat 20, under the mutual action of the bar 24 and the levers 25 and 25a, this inclination causes a deformation of the symmetrical pentagon formed by the levers 25 and 25a and the cable 28, by pivoting levers 25 and 25a around the axes 26 and 26a, therefore a pivoting of the bar 24 relative to the boat 20 in the opposite direction to that of this boat relative to the boat 21.
This consequently results in a transverse displacement of the gutter 22, which has the effect of exerting on the cable 28 by the arm 23a a traction opposite to the thrust exerted by the pad 52 on the pad 33. Under the action of this traction the push bar 32a tends to protrude further to the rear of the boat.
As regards the boat 21, under the action of the steering bar 24, the gutter 36 pivots around the slider 35 acting as a vertical axis of relative pivoting of the bar 24. Simultaneously, the arm 37a tightens the chain 38a, chain 38 becoming slack. The slide 39 moves, causing the rotation of the pulley 42 around the axis 43 and, consequently, that of the amplifying cam 44 which, by means of the block 46, exerts on the port and starboard strands of the cable 48 voltages directed in reverse directions. The tension thus exerted on the port portion of the cable 48 is opposed to the reaction exerted by the buffer 33 on the buffer 51.
As a result, the thrust bar 51a tends to overflow further to the front of the boat 21, the buffers 33a and 52a still remaining in contact. The steering bar 24 moves longitudinally in the deep grooves of the gutters 22 and 36 undergoing an angular deviation with respect to the boat 21 in the opposite direction to that of this boat with respect to the boat 20 and thus allows the coupling to lengthen. with respect to the position shown in FIG. 4.
The thrust exerted by the push bars 51 and 51a is transformed as a function of the deflection angle by the deformable trapezoidal action formed by the arms 23 and 23a and the levers 25 and 25a, in the case of the boat 20, and by amplification under the action of the block 46 and the cam 44, for the boat 21, in a couple which acts on the guide bar 24 via the gutters to straighten the con voi. The movements of the steering bar 24 in the longitudinal vertical planes of symmetry of the gutters allow the pitch and roll movements of one of the boats with respect to the other.
In fig. 4 to 6, boats 20 and 21 are shown as equipped with two different half-couplings. They could both wear half-hitches of the kind shown for each of them.
In the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 8, in which the guide bar 53 also constitutes a pushing means, this bar is mounted in a fork 54 articulated on a pin 55 located at the lower part of a plate 56. increasing distance between boats.
This carries two non-parallel bars 57 and 57a, articulated on it by ball joints arranged closer to the upper edge of this plate than to its lower edge. These bars are connected to ball joints fixed to the ends of a cross member 58 mounted by ball joints on the tops of two triangular plates 59 and 59a, articulated on the boat 60 by two hinges 61 and 61a parallel to the longitudinal plane of symmetry of this boat . The middle of the upper edge of the plate 56 is connected by a ball joint to a bar 62 mounted with a ball joint on the boat 60, the assembly being, at rest, disposed symmetrically with respect to the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the boat.
Bars 57, 57a and 62 could be replaced by chains. Likewise, the triangular pieces could be replaced by two uprights arranged as their vertical sides and fixed by sliders on the boat, and by chains arranged as their oblique sides 63 and 63a and fixed to the cross member 58 and on the boat.
When the boat 60 is deviated to port, the steering and thrust bar 53 causes a displacement to starboard and an inclination of the plate 56 about a vertical axis passing through the instantaneous center of rotation of this plate defined by the elements. elements that support it. This results in a warping of the deformable quadrilateral, formed by the bars 57, 57a and 58 and the plate 56, and an advance of the point of attachment of the bar 62 on this plate, which results in a shortening of the distance included. between axis 55 and bar 58.
The middle of the axis 55 approaches the transverse plane in which the bar 58 is located, that is to say moves back with respect to the boat, in its turn causing the steering and thrust bar 53 to move back, which undergoes a deflection. angular with respect to the boat 60 in the opposite direction to that of this boat with respect to the other boat connected to this bar. Thus, an elongation of the coupling is thus obtained to a determined value for a given angle of deflection between boats. The rolling movements are absorbed by the angular movements of the bars 57 and 57a.
The hitch shown in fig. 8 can be used between boats each consisting of two rigidly joined elements, as shown in FIG. 10, or, as shown in FIG. 11, between a boat made up of two contiguous elements and a single boat.
It suffices for this to use a cross member 58b spanning two joined elements 60b and 60c on which are respectively articulated the two triangular plates 59b and 59c, the distance increasing plates such as the plate 56b-spanning the dividing edges of the two elements. The straightening bar 62b can be fixed at a point common to the common edges of the elements or ensure the bonding of one of the plates 56b of a pair of elements to the other plate 56c of the same pair. The latter assembly could moreover be used in the case of the coupling of successive boats shown in FIG. 8.
The outline of the cam surfaces 16 and 17 in FIG. 1 and the increase in distance by the cable 28 or muffle 46 devices of FIG. 4 or by the plate 56 of FIG. 8, give the possibility of adjusting the elongation of the coupling so that it is greater than the average half-width of these boats multiplied by the tangent of the deflection angle. This ensures the stability of the convoy even for large angles of deviation.
Indeed, if we consider two boats A and B (fig. 20) articulated between them on two adjacent angles in C, the boat A deviated according to the figure is recalled in alignment as long as the hydrodynamic resistance R passes to starboard of the center of rotation C and deviates from boat B if this thrust passes to port of C. When the thrust passes through C, the mean spacing e of the two boats of width a and b is:
EMI0004.0010
a being the angle of deflection.
With the coupling described, the boat A '(fig. 21) is deflected with respect to the boat B' by pivoting around the instantaneous center of rotation C 'through which passes the resultant of the thrust R' and of the torque applied to the boat A 'by the push bar t. The hydrodynamic resistance R 'passing to starboard of the center of rotation C' tends to straighten the boat A 'even for angles of deviation much greater than a, hence increasing stability. The mean spacing é is greater than e.
Figs. 12 to 14 schematically show couplings mounted, on the one hand, between two successive boats of a pushed convoy of boats 64 provided with rollers 65 to pass over the shallows (fig. 12), on the other hand, between two boats of a pushed convoy of boats 66 fitted with support planes 67 capable of carrying all or part of the weight of the boat (fig. 13) and, finally, between two successive vehicles of a pushed convoy of land trailers 68 fitted with steerable wheels 69 (fig. 14).
The couplings of the type illustrated in fig. 1 to 11 allowing the convoy to deform in a stable manner under the action of forces external to the convoy can also be equipped with devices making it possible to voluntarily bend this convoy, in particular to pass in the curves of rivers, such as the curve C of fig. 15. Such bending of the convoy can be obtained by providing the lead boat with a bulldozer.
In order to break the symmetry of the coupling to replace the basic stable alignment of the boats by a stable angular deviation determined from boat to boat, the bending can be obtained either by modifying the geometry of the coupling (fig. . 16 and 17), or by applying a temporary internal force to the coupling ensuring a deformation of the latter (fig. 18).
In the bending device illustrated in fig. 16 and 17 associated with the coupling illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2, the V-shaped cam 70 is carried by a plate 71 with peripheral den ture 72 pivotably mounted on the pivot 73 carrying the gutter 74 in which the steering and push bar 75 moves. This plate rests on the boat 76 by balls 77 and is controlled in journalling around the pivot 73 by a toothed wheel 78 controlled in turn by a flywheel 79.
If the plate 72 is rotated in the direction of the arrow f, the guide bar tends to come back towards the top of the cam 70 which deflects the boat 76 in the desired direction. If this boat is fitted with a similar device at the front, the plate is rotated in the opposite direction to arrow f. A similar device could be associated with the coupling illustrated in FIG. 4, the gutters 22 and 36 then being integral with plates which move relative to the arms 23 and 37 respectively.
In the bending device illustrated in FIG. 18 and associated with the hitch illustrated in FIG. 8, the lower axis 80 of the distance increasing plate carries two pulleys 81 and 81a. Two return pulleys 82 and 82a are fixed to the boat 83. Two cables 84 and 84a pass respectively over the pulleys 81, 82 and 81a, 82a and over the similar pulleys of the other half-couplings of the convoy.
If a pull is exerted on the cable 84a in the direction of the arrow f, the pulley 81a approaches the pulley 82a and the whole device tends to bend as shown in FIG. 9. If the traction exerted on the cable 84a is released and the cable 84 is pulled, the curvature of the convoy is reversed.
The above device is given by way of example, any asymmetry created in the coupling being able to be used to produce the bending, by acting on the position of the pulleys 81 and 81a, of the steering bar 53 on the hinge, or of the attachment point 85 of the bar 62 on the boat.
The convoy curving devices described above also make it possible to modify the rectilinear shape of a convoy to give it an S-shape in order to pass through two successive curves of a river having reversed curvatures, as shown in fig. 19.
If the bending device fitted to the convoy is of the type illustrated in FIGS. 16 and 17, the plates 71 will be driven in pivoting following the direction of the arrow f at the rear of the boats e2 and e; 3 and at the front of the boats e; 3 and e4, while these plates will be moved in pivoting in the opposite direction of the arrow f at the front of the boats e1 and e. and at the rear of boats e_1 and e ,,.
If the bending device fitted to the convoy is of the type illustrated in FIG. 18, the cables 84 and 84a are fixed in any known manner on the boat e3 so as to pull on the end of the cable 84a passing over the rear half-hitch of this boat e; 3 and on the hitches of the boats e. # And el while pulling on the end of the cable 84 passing to the front of the boat es and on the boats e4 and e5.
The coupling can be supplemented by means for retaining between the successive elements, such as, as shown by way of example in FIGS. 1 to 7, two crossed soft cables 86.
As regards the roll and the swerves, it is possible to interpose in the coupling a filter of a conventional type consisting of a spring, an inertia element and a damper.
Finally, in order to avoid the entrainment of a large mass of water between the successive boats of the convoy, when they are aligned, the length of the push bars can be adjusted to bring the edges almost into contact. manhole of two successive boats by means of a shortening device controlled by the pilot.
Thus, by way of example and as shown in FIG. 8, the bar 53 consists of two parts, one of which is integral with the body 87 of a single-acting cylinder and the other with the piston 88 of this cylinder. Such an assembly can be made for any one of the guide bars of the couplings shown in the drawings. The cylinders of the guide bars of the same convoy are joined to general conduits leading to a control station. In the case of the coupling illustrated in fig. 8, the steering and push bar could be replaced for this purpose by a Nuremberg scissor member.
