<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
d'aves verticaux;

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

The present invention relates to improvements made to the couplings of convoys of pushed elements and their applications in particular for the constitution of a convoy of pushed boats intended more specifically for river or maritime navigation.
The convoys of pushed elements employed at the present time are either rigid or of modifiable form under the influence of mechanisms internal to the elements of the convoy which allow only small elastic deformations under the action of external forces. In some embodiments of pushed convoys with modifiable shape, a pusher is used
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
rotating freely around a hinge placed at the rear of the convoy while steering by the rudder of the boat which receives the thrust of this pusher. If, in the latter case, the system is stable in direction, it is not the same in the other cases because it then has a clear tendency to bend, unless the relative position of two successive elements is fixed. by undeformable geometric elements.
With a view, on the one hand, to remedy the aforementioned drawbacks and, on the other hand, to make it easily possible for river navigation of such convoys in curves with a small radius and navigation in swells, while using boats of the type normal without modifying the shape, the present invention relates to a method of pushing a convoy of pushed elements, such as normal boats, boats provided with wheels, caterpillars, support planes and land trailers with steerable wheels, according to which a reversible desmodromic, kinematic and dynamic link is established between two successive elements of the convoy causing, for any angular deviation of one of said elements with respect to the other,
a spacing between them with a distance from their instantaneous center of rotation from their longitudinal planes of symmetry, the spacing and the distance all the greater as this deviation increases angularly, and tending, consequently, to maintain or automatically re-establish the alignment of said elements under the sole action of the thrust.
Another object of the invention is to provide, between two successive elements of the convoy, a steering device arranged in the longitudinal planes of symmetry coinciding with the elements aligned and guided longitudinally on supports articulated on these elements at least around
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
vertical aves;
, and a reciprocal thrust transmission device of adjustable length., connected to said supports by reversible desmodromic links which are supported on fixed points of these elements and are determined such that, as soon as a deviating couple breaks the alignment elements, these supports move apart along the steering device, by a distance greater than the average half-width of these elements multiplied by the tangent of the angle of deflection, with simultaneous application to this steering device, by the intermediary of these supports .. a recovery torque generated by the thrust.
The stable position of the curved convoy is reached when the tacky straightening torque applied to the steering device reaches the va.leur 'of the curvature torque generating the deflection angle.
Other features of the invention will appear in the description which follows, with reference to the accompanying drawings by way of nonlimiting examples, and which will make it clear how the invention can be put into practice.

Figure 18 is a view of a bending device by applying a temporary force to the hitch shown in Figure 8.
FIG. 19 represents the appearance of a convoy of pushed boats equipped with bending devices, during the passage of S-curves in a river.
Figures 20 and 21 show schematically the forces applied to a deviated boat, respectively, in the case of a conventional hitch and a hitch according to the invention.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figures 1 to 3, the two successive boats, 1 and 2 moving along the arrow F are provided in the vicinity of their adjacent edges with vertical pivots 3 and 4 on which are pivotally mounted yokes 5 and 6 provided with horizontal axes 7 and 8 on which are articulated two gutters 9 and 10 in which slides a bar 11 playing both the role of guide bar and push bar.
The ends of the bar 11 are capped by yokes 12 and 13 which can pivot freely around this bar. These yokes carry at their ends rollers 14 and 15 which roll on vertical cams 16 and 17 substantially V-shaped formed on parts 19 and 19 fixed on boats 1 and 2.
These cams arranged symmetrically with respect to the longitudinal planes of symmetry of the boats have their tops directed towards the centers of the boats. The points of their profiles are located at decreasing distances from the axes
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
of pivots 3 and 4 from the top of V.
If under the action of external forces the boat 1 is oriented relative to the boat 2 by pivoting towards port, as shown in Figure 3, the steering bar 11 tilts relative to the two boats, causing the gutters to pivot. 9 and 10 around the pivots 3 and 4. The distance between the axis of the rollers 14 and 15 and the axes of these pivots decreases, which causes an elongation of the convoy. The reactions of the surfaces of the cams 16 and 17 on the rollers 14 and 15 generated by the thrust create a torque on the bar 11, which tends to realign the two gutters 9 and 10 and, consequently, to straighten the convoy while shortening the 'coupling.
The pivoting of the yokes 12 and 13 on the bar 11 and the movements of this bar in the longitudinal vertical planes of symmetry of the gutters 9 and 10 allow the relative movements of the two boats due to the roll and to the pitch.
In the embodiment of the hitch between boats 20 and 21 illustrated in Figures 4 to 6, a gutter 22 with opposite crank arms 23 and 23a provided with a deep groove in which moves a guide bar 24 is mounted on the pushed boat 20. The arms 23 and 23a are articulated on two levers 25 and 25a articulated in turn at 26 and 26a on the boat.
These arms carry at their ends pulleys 27 and 27a on which is wound a cable 28 which passes over a central double return pulley 29, fixed on the boat, and on two return pulleys 30 and 30a also fixed on the boat to end in supports 31 and 31a fixed to the ends of side push bars 32 and 32a provided with buffers 33 and 33a, and guided by bearings 34.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
On the pusher boat 21 is mounted a slider 35 in which pivots a gutter 36 provided with two opposite crank arms 37 and 37a and a deep groove in which the steering bar 24 can move. The arms 37,37a carry two chains 38 and 38a acting as flexible connecting rods and joined to a slide 39 movable longitudinally with respect to the boat in a slide 40. On the slide 39 is fixed a cable 41 which is wound on a pulley 42 whose pivot 43 fixed on the boat serves at the same time as a pivot to a groove amplifying cam 44 with a spiral arc profile, 'integral with the pulley 42 (fig. 7) and serving for winding a cable 45 coupled to a block 46 provided with a double pulley 47 fixed on the boat.
A cable 48 is wound on this block 46 and from there on two return pulleys 49 and 49a also fixed to the boat to end in supports 50 and 50a fixed to the ends of push bars 51 and 51a provided with buffers 52 and 52a.
If, under the action of external forces, the boat 20 is oriented with respect to the boat 21 by pivoting towards the port side, as shown in FIG. 6, the steering bar 24 tilts with respect to the two boats. On the boat 20, this inclination causes a deformation of the symmetrical pentagon formed by the levers 25 and 25a and the cable 28 by pivoting of the levers 25 and 25a around 26 and 26a, and, therefore, a transverse displacement of the gutter 22, which, combined with the inclination of this gutter, has the effect of exerting on the cable 28 by the arm 23a a traction opposite to the thrust exeroed by the buffer 52 on the buffer 33.
Under the action of this traction, - the push bar 32a tends to overflow further to the rear of the boat.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
As regards the boat 21, under the action of the steering bar 24, the gutter 36 pivots around the frame 35 and the arm 37a tightens the chain 38a, the chain 38 becoming soft. The slider 39 moves, causing the rotation of the pulley 42 around the axis 43 and, consequently, that of the amplifying cam 44 which, through the intermediary of the block 46, exerts on the port and starboard strands of the cable 48 voltages directed in opposite directions. The tension thus exerted on the port portion of the cable 48 is opposed to the reaction exerted by the buffer 33 on the buffer 51.
Under its action, the push bar 51a tends to overflow further to the front of the boat 21, the buffers 33a and 52a still remaining in contact. The steering bar 24 moves in the deep grooves of the gutters 22 and 36 by moving backwards with respect to the two elements, thus allowing the hitch to stretch out from the position shown in FIG. 4.
The thrust exerted by the push bars 51 and 51a is transformed as a function of the angle by the action of the deformable trapezoid formed by the arms 23 and 23a and the levers 25 and 25a, in the case of the boat 20, and by amplification under the action of the block 46 and the cam 44, for the boat 21, in a couple which acts on the steering bar 24 via the gutters to straighten the Convoy. The movements of the steering bar 24 in the longitudinal vertical planes of symmetry of the gutters allow the pitch and roll movements of one of the boats with respect to the other.
In Figures 4 to 6, the boats 20 and 21 are shown as equipped with two different half-couplings. They could both wear half-hitches

Gender represents for each of them.
In the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 8, with a single steering and thrust bar 53, this bar is mounted in a fork 51 articulated by knuckles on a pin 55 at the lower part of an amplifying part 56. The latter carries two non-parallel bars 57 and 57a, articulated on it by ball joints arranged closer to the upper edge of this part than to its lower edge. These bars are connected to ball joints fixed to the ends of a cross member 58 mounted by a ball joint the tops of two triangular plates 59 and 59a, articulated on the element 60 by two hinges 61 and 61a parallel to the longitudinal plane of symmetry of this element.
The middle of the top of the amplifying plate 56 is connected by a ball joint to a bar 62 mounted with a ball joint on the element 60, the assembly being, at rest, disposed symmetrically with respect to the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the element.
The bars 57, 57a and 62 could be replaced by chains, Similarly, the triangular pieces could be replaced by two uprights arranged as their vertical sides and fixed by sliders on the element, and by chains arranged as their oblique sides 63 and 63a and fixed to the cross member 58 and to the element.
When the element 60 is deflected towards port, the steering and push bar 53 causes a displacement and an inclination towards starboard of the plate 56 around the instantaneous center of rotation of this plate as defined by the elements which support it. This results in a warping of the deformable quadrilateral, formed by the bars 57,57a and 58 dt the plate 56, and an advance of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
pent attachment of the bar 62 on this plate, which results in a shortening of the perpendicular common to the axis 55 and to the bar 58. The middle of the axis 55 approaches the transverse plane in which moves the bar 58, that is to say moves back relative to the element., in turn causing the steering and thrust bar 53 to move back.
An elongation of the coupling to a determined value for a given deflection angle between elements is therefore thus obtained.
The rolling movements are absorbed by the angular movements of the bars 57 and 57a,
The device illustrated in FIG. 8 instead of being applied to a coupling between two successive elements can be used to provide a coupling between pairs of rigidly joined elements, as shown in FIG. 10, or, as shown in FIG. 11, between a pair of adjoining elements and a single element. It suffices for this to use a cross member 58b spanning two adjoining elements 60b and 60c on which the two triangular plates 61b and 61c are respectively articulated, the amplifying plates such as the plate 56b spanning the party edges of the two elements.
The straightening bar 62b can be attached to a point common to the common edges of the elements or 'connect one of the amplifier plates 56b of one pair of elements to the other amplifier plate 56c of the same pair. This latter assembly could also be used in the case of the coupling of successive elements shown in Figure 8.
The layout of the cams 16 and 17 (the figure 1 and the amplification by muffles 28 or 46 of figure 4, or by the amplifying plate 56 of figure 8, gives the possibility of adjusting the elongation of the hitch way

that it is greater than the average half-width of these boats multiplied by the tangent of the deflection angle.
This ensures the stability of the system even for large angles of deviation.
Indeed, if we consider two boats A and B (figure 20) articulated between them on the common angle C, the boat A deviated according to the figure is recalled in alignment as long as / the hydrodynamic resistance R passes to starboard of the center of curvature C and folds back onto boat B if this thrust passes to port of C. When the thrust passes
In the coupling according to the invention, the boat A '(fig. 21) is deflected with respect to the boat B' by pivoting around the instantaneous center of rotation or center of curvature C "through which passes the resultant of the thrust and of the torque applied to A 'by the thrust bar t.The hydrodynamic resistance R' passing to starboard of the center of curvature C 'tends to straighten the boat A' even for angles of deviation much greater than Ó hence increasing the stability.
The average spacing e 'is greater than e.
Figures 12 to 14 schematically show the use of a coupling device according to the invention, on the one hand, between two successive elements of a pushed convoy of boats 64, provided with rollers 65 to pass over the tops. funds (fig. 12). on the other hand, between two successive elements of a pushed convoy of boats 66 provided with support planes 67 capable of carrying all or part of the weight of the boat (fig. 13) and, finally, between two successive elements of a Pushed convoy of land trailers 68 fitted with steerable wheels 69 (Figure 14).
The convoy of pushed elements equipped; of devices
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
coupling of the type illustrated in Figures 1 to 11 allow it to deform in a stable manner under the action of forces external to the convoy is also equipped with devices allowing this convoy to be bent voluntarily, in particular to pass through curves. rivers, such as curve C in figure 15.
Such bending of the convoy can be obtained by providing the head boat with a bulldozer,
In order to break the symmetry of the assembly to replace the basic stable alignment of the elements with a predetermined stable angular deviation from element to element, the bending can be obtained either by a modification of the geometry of the system (figures 16 and 17), or by applying a temporary internal force to the hitch to deform the system (figure 18).
In the bending device illustrated in Figures 16 and 17 applied to the coupling illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the V-shaped cam 70 is carried by a plate 71 with peripheral toothing 72 pivotally mounted on the pivot 73 carrying the gutter 74 in which moves the steering and thrust bar 75. This plate rests on the element 76 by balls 77 and is controlled in journalling around the pibot 73 by a toothed wheel 78 controlled in turn by a flywheel 79. turn '' the plate 72 in the direction of the arrow f, the guide bar tends to return to the top of the cam 70 which deflects the element 76 in the desired direction. If this element is equipped at the front with a similar device, the plate is rotated in the opposite direction to the arrow f.
A similar device could be associated with the couplings illustrated in FIG. 4, the gutters then being integral with the plate which would move relative to the crank arms.
In the oourbage device illustrated in FIG. 18 and applied to the coupling illustrated in FIG. 8, the lower axis 80 of the amplifying plate carries two pulleys 81 and $ la,
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
Two return pulleys 82 and 82a are fixed to the element 83. Two cables 84 and 84a pass respectively over the pulleys 81 82 and $ la, 82a and over the similar pulleys of the other half-couplings of the convoy.
If one exerts a traction on the cable 84a in the direction of the arrow f, the pulley 81a approaches the pulley 82a and the whole of the device tends to bend as shown in figure 9. If one relaxes the traction exerted on the cable 84a and that one pulls on the cable 84, the curvature of the convoy is reversed.
The above device is indicated by way of example, any asymmetry created in the coupling that can be used to produce the bending, by acting on the position of the pulleys 81 and 81a, of the steering bar 53 on the hinge or of the retainer. 85 on the element.
The convoy curving devices described above also make it possible to modify the rectilinear shape of a convoy to give it an S-shape with a view to passing through two successive curves of a river having inverted curvatures as shown in figure 19.
If the bending device fitted to the convoy is of the type shown in Figures 16 and 17, the plates 71 will be driven in pivoting in the direction of the arrow f at the rear of the elements e and e3 and at the front @ of the elements e3 and e4, while these plates will be pivoted in the opposite direction to the arrow f at the front of the elements e1 and e2 and at the rear of the elements e4 and e5.
If the bending device fitted to the convoy is of the type illustrated in FIG. 18, the cables 84 and 84a are fixed in any known manner on the element e3 so as to pull on the strand of the cable 84a passing over the
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
rear half-hitch of this element c3 and on the hitches of elements e2 and e1 while pulling on the end of the cable 84 passing to the front of element e3 and on elements e4 and e.
The coupling is completed by means of positive connection between the successive elements, such as, as shown by way of example in Figures 1 to 7, two crossed soft cables 86.
As regards the roll and the swerves, it is possible to interpose in the coupling a filter of a conventional type consisting of a spring, an inertia and a damper.
Finally, it is possible to avoid the driving in movement of a large mass of water between the successive elements of the convoy, when these are aligned, the length of the push bars can be adjusted to bring the edges almost into contact. next to two successive boats by means of a shortening device controlled by the pilot.
Thus, by way of example and as shown in FIG. 8, the bar 53 consists of two parts, one of which is secured to the body 87 of a single-acting jack and the other with the piston 88 of this cylinder. Such an assembly can be achieved for any one of the guide bars of the couplings illustrated in the figures.
The cylinders of the guide bars of the same convoy are joined to general pipes leading to a control station. In the case of the hitch illustrated in Figure 8, the steering and push bar could be replaced for this purpose by a Nuremberg bird device.
