Process for the production of dyes In the German patent specification No. 386057 the production of vat dyes by reacting perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid or its derivatives with ammonia or primary aromatic or aliphatic amines is described. The condensation is generally carried out in a large excess of the amine in question at elevated temperatures.
According to the information in American Patent No. 2,715,127, this implementation succeeds with a small excess of the amine in the presence of a high-boiling solvent or diluent, such as nitrobenzene or o-dichlorobenzene, and a dehydrating agent such as anhydrous zinc chloride . According to the method of American patent specification No. 2543 747, the condensation of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetra- carboxylic acid with arylamines can also be carried out in an aqueous medium with equally good results.
The products obtained in this way are red to bordeaux red vat dyes, which the vegetable fibers, such as. B. cotton, rayon or viscose silk, dye from the vat in red tones with good authenticity properties.
If you want to use these process products for other purposes, e.g. B. as pigments in the printing inks and coatings industry, for real coloring of plasticizer-containing polyvinyl chloride, also in so-called stoving enamels or for dyeing in the spinning mass, it turns out that the vast majority of these dyes are out of the question for these purposes because they are not have the properties that are required of a dye in these areas of application, z. B.
Solvent and overspray fastness; Insolubility in a polyvinyl chloride mixture, even at elevated temperatures; Resistance of the dye to high processing temperatures; Non-blooming in highly plasticized mixtures and high lightfastness, even in very weak tones.
If, for example, the perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid or its anhydride is condensed with aromatic amines, such as. B. vic. meta-xylidine, 1-amino-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene or 1-amino-3-methylcyclohexane, dyes are obtained which have poor solvent fastness, so that they are not suitable for practical use.
When the perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid or its anhydride is reacted with o-aminodiphenylsulfone or 5-aminohydrindene, dyes are obtained which have poor lightfastness, so that for this reason alone they are of no practical interest.
The condensation product of perylenetetracarboxylic acid with p-toluidine undergoes a complete change in color when exposed to heat. The reaction products of perylenetetracarboxylic acid with asymmetric m-xylidine and cyclohexylamine show very poor resistance to bleeding in polyvinyl chloride mixtures.
It has now been found that you can keep dyes, which are characterized by clear shades and in a particularly advantageous manner for real coloring of plastics, such. B .. plasticized polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene, paints and printing inks with very good fastness properties are suitable if perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid or its anhydride is condensed with p-cyclohexyl aniline.
Example 1 160 parts by weight of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and 416 parts by weight of p-cyclohexylaniline are added one after the other to 3200 parts by volume of quinoline. After 80 parts by volume of concentrated hydrochloric acid have been added dropwise, the mixture is heated to 220-230 for 10 hours while the water is continuously distilled off. The product is filtered off with suction while cold, washed once or twice with methanol to remove the adhering quinoline and then boiled several times with dilute sodium hydroxide solution, washed with hot water and dried.
The red dye, which crystallizes from quinoline in fine needles, does not melt up to 340, is sparingly soluble in common organic solvents and dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a purple color without fluorescence. It is characterized by exceptional clarity and excellent fastness properties both in paints and in plastics, such as. B. polyvinyl chloride mixtures, and has a very good oil resistance, spray fastness, solvent fastness, blood fastness and light fastness.
Example 2 20 parts by weight of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, 62 parts by weight of p-cyclohexylaniline and 10 parts by volume of concentrated hydrochloric acid are introduced successively into 320 parts by weight of water in a stirred autoclave. The mixture is stirred at 210-220 and 40 atmospheres pressure for 12 hours. Then the product is sucked off cold and worked up according to the information in Example 1. The dye obtained is identical to the product obtained according to Example 1.
