Screwdrivers Screwdrivers are already known comprising a blade-holder rod having two helical grooves the inclinations of which are in the opposite direction, these grooves containing a lug placed in the handle. A freewheel coupling device, disposed in the handle, allows rotation of the blade holder rod in one direction only. A maneuvering slider, movable on the handle, allows the freewheel coupling device to be switched to reverse. the permissible direction of rotation of the blade holder.
Depending on the position of the cursor, the blade holder spindles in either direction when the screwdriver is pushed in, allowing a screw to be turned in and out relatively quickly. This screwdriver is expensive and complicated, and must be executed in relatively large dimensions, given the delicate parts which constitute it. On the other hand, we have to move the operating cursor to go from screwing to unscrewing.
The object of the invention is to remedy these drawbacks. It relates to a screwdriver which is characterized in that it comprises a socket surmounted by a rotating cup and a blade holder rod having a single helical groove in which is engaged a connecting element held in place by the sleeve, a spring housed in the sleeve tending to push the blade holder rod out of the sleeve,
so that a longitudinal displacement of the sleeve in one direction or the other rotates the blade holder rod in one direction of rotation or the other.
This screwdriver can be made in small dimensions and serve for example as a precision screwdriver, in particular for watchmakers. It can be operated with one hand and allows you to switch from screwing to unscrewing without any operation. Its cost price is low and it is easy to manufacture. The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment and a variant of the subject of the invention. Fig. 1 is an elevational view, partially in section, of this embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a section on an enlarged scale, showing the pivoting of the cup.
Fig. 3 is a. view, partially in section and on an enlarged scale, of the connection between the sleeve and the blade holder rod. Fig. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3, concerning the variant.
The screwdriver shown in the drawing comprises a socket 1 surmounted by a rotating cup 2 and a rod 3 carrying the blade 4 of the screwdriver. The outer cylindrical surface of the sleeve 1 is knurled or otherwise roughened, to facilitate its gripping with the fingers. The cup 2 is rotatably mounted on the bush 1 by means of a ball bearing 5.
The balls 5 are arranged freely in holes of a plate 6 forming a cage, the thickness of which is less than the diameter of the balls, as shown in FIG. 2. A screw 7, taking in a neck 8 of the sleeve 1, abuts with its head against the end face of the neck 8, so that there remains a slight clearance between this screw head and the recess 9 of the cup 2.
The cage 6 is mounted loose with play on the neck 8 of the sleeve 1, so that the cup 2 can turn completely free with respect to the sleeve 1. The blade holder rod 3 has a long helical groove single 10 in which is engaged a connecting element held in place by the sleeve 1. As shown in FIG. 3, this connecting element is formed by the leg of a head screw 11 taking in the wall of the sleeve 1.
The end of the leg of the screw 11 has no thread and is a diameter smaller than that of the threaded part. A small roller 12, surrounding this non-threaded part, is intended to roll on the edges of the groove 10 and reduces the friction. The screw 11 has a length such that the free end of its leg does not touch the bottom of the groove 10.
The rod 3 has, at its upper part, a sleeve 13 telescopically engaged in the sleeve 1. A coil spring 14, disposed inside the sleeve 1 and the sleeve 13, constantly tends to push the rod 3 out of the sleeve. sleeve 1. This spring 14 is supported, on the one hand, on a collar 15 of a rod 16 mounted freely in the sleeve 1 and, on the other hand, on a collar 17 of a rod 18 mounted freely in the sleeve 13. A ball 19 is interposed between the collar 17 and the bottom of the sleeve 13 to allow the rod 3 to rotate relative to the spring 14 and to the sleeve 1 ,. without twisting the spring 14.
The blade 4 of the screwdriver is fixed to the end of the rod 3 by means of a screw 20. A guide cap 21, subjected to the action of a small coil spring 22, bears against a shoulder 23 of blade 4. In the rest position of the screwdriver, the free edge of the cap 21 exceeds the free end of the blade 4 (fig. 1), so that a screw 24 presented in front of the screwdriver cannot enter in contact with the blade 4.
The screwdriver described and shown works as follows To drive in a screw 24 (here assumed to be a usual right-hand screw), hold the sleeve 1 between the thumb and middle finger of the right hand and press the cup 2 with the index finger . The screwdriver is then approached to the screw 24, previously placed in the sheathing of the part, and it is pushed axially, which compresses the spring 14.
At the start of the movement, the guide cap 21 is pushed back up the thread. 1, against the action of the spring 22, so that the blade 4 comes into contact with the head of the screw 24 and falls into the slot thereof. The connection between the sleeve 1 and the helical groove 10 of the rod 3 ensures rapid rotation to the right of the blade 4, and if the groove 10 has a sufficient length, the screw 24 is screwed in all at once.
We then let go of the sleeve 1, but continue to press on the rotating cup 2 with the index, and we slowly release the pressure on the cup 2 until the sleeve, by turning to the right when empty, has returned to its initial position under the action of the spring 14. The screwdriver is then moved away from the part. The operation is complete. Tightening a screw takes barely a fraction of a second, whereas with standard screwdrivers it takes several seconds.
It can be seen that the guide cap 21 makes it possible to speed up the screwing operation. It is in fact no longer necessary to look for the slot of the screw 24 with the blade 4, because the latter automatically enters the slot when the sleeve 1 is pushed in after having capped with the cap 21 the screw 24 engaged in the tapping the part. This avoids any loss of time and any risk of scratching the part in the vicinity of the tapping.
To unscrew a screw 24, we proceed as follows: we start by engaging the blade 4 in the slot of the screw 24, as described above, then we insert the screwdriver axially by pressing on the cup 2, but without hold the bush 1 so that it turns to the left, empty, and the spring 14 is compressed. At the end of its travel, we give the sleeve 1 a slight movement to the left to release the screw 24, and we move back by holding the sleeve 1 between the thumb and middle finger and pressing the cup 2 with the index finger . During this last movement, under the action of the spring 14, the rod 3 turns to the left and unscrews the screw 24 all at once.
We see that the unscrewing is done extremely quickly, although hardly taking a little more time than the screwing. In the variant shown in FIG. 4, the connecting element between the sleeve 1 and the rod 3 is formed by a ball 25 engaged halfway in the helical groove 10 and halfway in a hole 26 of the sleeve 1. A spring 27 in the form of an open ring, disposed in a recess 28 of the socket 1, hand holds the ball 25 in place. The operation is the same as that described above.
