Process for producing a magnetic core with an almost rectangular hysteresis loop Magnetic cores with an almost rectangular hysteresis loop are important for many applications. This type of core is used, among other things, for so-called magnetic storage (see, for example, W. N. Papian, Proceedings of the I. R.
E., April 1952, pages 475 to 478, and D. R. Brown and E. Albers-Sehoenberg, Eleetronics, April 1953, pages 146-149). Such magnetic memories are used, for example, in calculating machines and automatic pilots and in magnetic circuits.
The measure that indicates how far the shape of the hysteresis loop approaches the rectangular shape can be expressed quantitatively in various ways. A common measure is. for example the quotient
EMI0001.0019
To explain the meaning of this expression, reference is made to FIG. 1, which is a schematic representation of part of a saturation magnetization curve e.
In this figure, B,. the remanence induction and B ,, 1 the induction at which the hysteresis loop just closes. In practice, it is often difficult to measure B, 1 accurately.
However, an approximately correct value for B, 1 is found by taking the mean value of the inductions after partial magnetization or partial demagnetization (with interim saturation), the two inductions being measured at the same field strength selected in this way that the inductions mentioned differ by more than 1% but less than 3% from one another.
This method was also used in the measurements made to carry out the present invention; a ballistic galvanometer was used for these measurements (Bozorth, Ferromagnetism, p. 843).
In the present case, it is always assumed that the Quo tient on an annular magnetic core with a
EMI0001.0043
constant cross-section of the ferromagnetic material over the entire circumference of the ring and with an outer diameter equal to at most 1.6 times the inner diameter.
The measure, which indicates how far the shape of the hysteresis loop approaches the rectangular shape, can also be expressed by the so-called squareness ratio (Rs) max. For the importance of this variable, reference is made to the literature mentioned above.
For the sake of completeness, a brief discussion follows, with reference to FIG. 2, which is also a schematic representation of part of a magnetization curve which relates to a case in which demagnetization was already started before the magnetic saturation. The size (R ') m; @, is called
EMI0002.0003
Are defined. The quotient
EMI0002.0004
is a function of the greatest applied field strength Hm.
It can be seen that this quotient has a maximum at a certain value of H "", which is mostly little different from the coercive force H,. This maximum value of the quotient is denoted by the symbol (RB) m "". The measurements of B (HM) and B, _ 1/2 Hm, required to determine (Rg), r, y, can also be performed again be carried out with the aid of a ballistic galvanometer.
In this case, too, ring-shaped magnetic cores with a constant cross-section were used as test objects. of the magnetic material over the entire circumference of the ring and with an outer diameter at most equal to 1.6 times the inner diameter.
When using ferromagnetic materials with an almost rectangular hysteresis loop, it is mostly a question of alternating currents of high frequency, so it is important to limit the eddy currents as much as possible. When using ferromagnetic alloys, this can To a certain extent, the magnetic cores are built up from very thin layers of ferromagnetic material that are isolated from one another.
But it is extremely difficult to build cores with an almost square hysteresis loop from very thin layers. So it is beneficial at these high frequencies. and at even higher frequencies it is even necessary to use magnetically soft, ferric-oxy-containing substances with a spinel structure. This is because these substances have very low electrical conductivity.
The main condition for the usefulness of the mentioned magnetic cores for magnetic storage and magnetic circuits is furthermore that the coercive force (H,) is small (preferably higher than 10 oersted and preferably even lower than 5 oersted), otherwise the electromagnetic losses get too high.
According to the invention it has been shown that magnetic cores with an almost reehteek-shaped hysteresis loop, with the conditions
EMI0002.0034
and (RJ> 0.6 as well as H, G 4 Oersted is met, can be obtained by the fact that they can be obtained from miseli crystals of spinel structure with the C overall formula L1, C11,
1 _21yFer2 @ -x @ 04, where x is between 0.25 and 0.40; These mixed crystals are produced in that an oxidic compound of lithium, copper and iron which can be converted into the mentioned mixed crystals in the required weight ratio is produced in a grass atmosphere with an oxygen content. of more than 50 percent by volume at a temperature of 1100 to 1200 C -, is wintered.
<I> Example </I> A mixture of lithium carbonate and iron oxide is ground for 8 to 10 hours in pure alcohol or anhydrous benzene and then preburnt for one hour at 750 C in a gas mixture from 1 part by volume of carbon dioxide to 6 parts by volume of oxygen. After cooling, the reaction product is then for some time, e.g.
B. 2 hours, ground in pure alcohol. If the ratio of the amounts of lithium carbonate and iron oxide is selected correctly, the reaction product consists of a compound whose composition essentially corresponds to the formula Lio, 5Fee, 50.1. A pre-fired mixture of copper oxide and iron oxide is also produced.
For this purpose, a mixture of these substances in a ratio of 1 atom of copper to about 2 atoms of iron is ground in alcohol for 10 hours and then burned for one hour at 750 C in a Sallerstoffatm.o sphere. After cooling, the reaction product is ground in alcohol for 2 hours.
For the final reaction, the compound 1.jio, 5Fe2.504 and the pre-fired mixture of copper oxide and iron oxide are mixed in the desired weight ratio, ground for 5 hours in pure alcohol and the whole thing sintered in oxygen at a temperature between 1100 and 1200 C. The following table shows the composition, the value of the quotient, of some magnetic cores produced in this way

<tb> L10. @ ;; CZ10.50Fe2.250.1 <SEP> 0.90 <SEP> 0.75 <SEP> 1.5 The squareness ratio of the hysteresis loop of the mentioned magnetic cores can be expediently opened up by heating at least the Curie temperature, and subsequent cooling in a magnetic field.
For this purpose, either an alternating magnetic field or a constant magnetic field can be used. In the case of a magnet core with a composition corresponding to the formula Lio, 3oCuo, 40Fe2.3004, it was found possible to increase the square ratio of the hysteresis loop from 0.65 to 0.80 in this way.
