Process for the preparation of esters of terephthalic acid with two alcohol components which are different from one another. The invention relates to. a process for the preparation of esters of terephthalic acid with two different alcohol components, wherein a monoester of terephthalic acid, formed from a monohydric alcohol, such as. B. methanol or ethanol, is reacted with Xtbclenoxyd.
It is known to use alkali salts of a Terlit.halsäuremonoest.ers with. a chlorohydrin, such as. B. Äthylenehlorhydrin until the formation of the desired ester with two different alcohol components. to interact with each other.
The separate inorganic salt means a hindrance to the complete course of the reaction. There are also great difficulties with the complete one. Cleaning of the accomplished 3liseliesters. Furthermore, it is already known to react diacids with ethylene oxide.
.However, the diglvcol esters of diacid or their lioildensation products result. Technically valuable for the production of holimolecular condensation products are, however, the -nlonoglycules full of dicarboxylic acids,
especially the monoglycol ester of terephthalic acid, as the latter is extremely difficult to access.
When terephthalic acid is reacted with ethylene oxide in the presence of water, in addition to the diglycol ester formed as the main product, a small amount of the monoglycol ester of terephthalic acid, the so-called llono-oxyethyl terephthalate, is also disfigured. However, this procedure is not a method for the production of large quantities of this product,
because the product is only a by-product here and is difficult to separate from the main product. For condensation reactions, apart from the monoglycol ester of terephthalic acid, the derivatives are particularly useful as esters. Low-boiling alcohols are valuable because here the condensation cannot take place with elimination of water, but, for example, with elimination of 1-ethyl alcohol.
It has been found that the desired mixed ester can be obtained in good yield and in high purity and in a simple manner of reaction if one uses the monoester of terephthalic acid, formed from a monohydric alcohol, e.g. B. on the. Terephthalic acid monomethyl ester, which is preferably dissolved in an inert solvent. Let ethylene oxide take effect.
Xylene and dioxane, for example, have proven useful as inert solvents. The reaction is carried out at temperatures of 80-110 ° C. If the ethylene oxide is allowed to act in a liquid state, one will work under pressure, whereas if gaseous ethylene oxide is used the application of pressure can be dispensed with, but longer reaction times are then to be accepted.
To shorten the reaction times, the reaction in the pressure vessel will generally be preferred. You only need a small excess of ethylene oxide. The reaction time is about 4-6 hours. The mixed ester formed is obtained in almost pure form if the solvent used is mixed with benzene and this solution is filtered through aluminum oxide.
It was surprising to find that when working according to the conditions according to the invention, neither polymeric glycol esters are formed nor a conversion reaction takes place by splitting off the monohydric alcohol component. The desired mixed ester is obtained in high yield. It is a valuable starting material for the manufacture of plastics.
Example 1 100 parts of terephthalic acid monomet.hyl ester (F-21a) are dissolved in 1000 parts of dioxane at 50 ° C., filled into an autoclave, and 100 parts of liquid ethylene oxide are added and allowed to react for 5 hours 100 C heated. After cooling, the dioxane is distilled off. When the concentrated solution cools, the mixed ester separates out in crystalline form. The mixed ester filtered off is dissolved in benzene and filtered through aluminum oxide.
The mixed ester separates out of the concentrated benzene solution in long, colorless ones. Needles with a melting point of 80-S2 C. Yield: 91 1 / o of theory.
Example 100 parts of terephthalic acid monomethyl ester are dissolved in 2000 parts of xylene at 50.degree. C. and the procedure described in Example 1 is repeated. Example 3 100 parts of monoethyl terephthalate are dissolved in 1000 parts of xylene and reacted analogously to Example 1. The colorless reaction product separates the mixed ester in almost pure form after concentration.
After recrystallization from benzene, the mixed ester is obtained as a colorless crystalline product with a melting point of 59-60 ° C. Yield: 87 / o of theory.
