(fig. 6).
Apparatus for producing articles wrapped in heat-softening material.
In main patent No. 288910 is disclosed an apparatus for the manufacture of wrapped articles, such as wooden sticks, of a material which softens at the heat but hardens at room temperature, the apparatus comprising inter alia the following devices:
a mechanism for feeding a web of packaging material (for example a film of regenerated cellulose with or without the addition of a metallic film), a mechanism for continuously folding the longitudinal edges of the web around it 'a shape so as to obtain a flexible casing, a mechanism for con t inulating the softened chocolate mass into the moving core, a mechanism for producing a flat chocolate bar with a smooth surface, a cooling mechanism of the chocolate bar, a mechanism for the formation of internal folds,
a mechanism for subdividing the chocolate bar by producing closure strips and finally a mechanism for severing the chocolate bar to the closure strips so as to produce chocolate sticks of unciform density, smooth surface, regular shape and of rigorously constant weight.
The object of the present invention is to create an embodiment of the smoothing mechanism described in the main patent, of simpler construction,
The smoothing mechanism forming the subject of the present invention comprises endless ribbons which move with the casing filled with chocolate and subdivided into tablets by transverse bands, flexible carrying members, provided with bars, and members intended to press. said ribbons against the flattened surfaces of the casing filled with chocolate and in pressing said strips against said transverse bands, said ribbons having transverse perforations to allow said strips to pass which must press said casing transversely in places.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the smoothing mechanism forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a schematic view of the complete machine for which the smoothing mechanism is intended.
Fig. 2 is a schematic view of part of the control members of the various mechanisms of the machine.

Fig. 6 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of part of the smoothing mechanism shown in FIG. 3, this part being encircled by line VI.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of part of the tape of the smoothing mechanism.
As shown in fig. 1, a web 29 of the wrapping material is continuously drawn from a suitably braked feed roll 30 and fed to a folding device 35 which folds it back around a mouth 36. This mouth is flat and drains. a chocolate slide on the strip 29. The chocolate slide has a width approximately equal to the distance between the folded edges of the strip. The folded edges of the strip are folded over one another over the mouth and are, at this point, compressed by a roller (not shown), so as to weld the edges of the strip to form a hose flexible. This casing is filled with chocolate through the mouth 36, the chocolate being still hot and soft and supplied by a hopper 47 with a pump 51 placed in the vicinity of the mouth 36.
A wrapped chocolate bar 38 is thus continuously produced.
This chocolate bar 38, passing under a leveling roller 39, is supported by a plate 46, so that downstream of the roller 39, it has a flat and regular shape, a constant density and a smooth surface.
On leaving the roller 39, the bar 38 passes through a cooling device 40 (in the form of a long straight passage), then it is successively subjected to the action of a mechanism for forming internal folds 41, a pressing mechanism 42, smoothing mechanism 43, severing mechanism 44, and from there it passes to a conveyor 45 which reviews the wrapped chocolate sticks.
After passing through the internal fold forming mechanism 41, the chocolate bar is fed to the pressing mechanism 42 (Figs. 3 and 4) for the formation of the closure bands. Said pressing mechanism comprises a pair of rollers 65, 66 each carrying a flat edge 67 (Fig. 4) arranged in such a way that the flat parts come to be placed opposite each other when the rollers rotate. These ridges 67 tightly compress the surfaces of the chocolate bar flattened by their passage under the roller 39, thus forming a crushed transverse strip 96
(fig. 6).
This pressing operation, if it were carried out without the prior formation of internal folds in the mechanism 41, would cause the formation of a widening by side tales in the vicinity of the crushed passage 96. But the internal folds formed on each side of the bar of chocolate push the material inside, so that it cannot lend itself to an enlargement of the bar in these places, and, at the end of the pressing operation, the width of the bar therefore remained substantially constant.
The formation of the internal folds and the pressing will push the chocolate back inside the casing, causing the formation of excess thicknesses in the vicinity of the crushed passage 96.
This is why the chocolate bar is then brought to the smoothing mechanism 43, which aims to remove these extra thicknesses.
The smoothing mechanism 43 (see in particular Figs. 3, 5 and 6) comprises four drums 70 arranged two by two one above the other, these drums being rotatably mounted on shafts 71 mounted on a frame. 53 of the machine and controlled as described below. Around the two upper drums passes an endless ribbon 72, preferably of steel foil and having on its edges perforations 73 (fig. 7) in which the fingers 74 projecting on the drums engage, so that the tape will not slip while it is being driven by the drums. The lower drums also carry a belt driven in the same way (fig. 3 and 5).
The drums 70 cooperate with two ramps 75 which are supported by consoles 76 mounted on the frame 53 (FIG. 5). These ramps 75 are arranged one above the other, and each comprises two guide surfaces 77, mainly horizontal, which bear over the entire width of the tape. A chain 78 rests on each of these surfaces 77 of the ramps 75, the chains of each ramp carrying bars 79 which extend over the entire width of the tapes 72.
Each bar of the chains of one ramp is intended to come into contact with a bar of the chains of the other ramp and thereby to form between it a crushed part 96 (FIG. 6). The upper and lower guide surfaces 77 gradually approach each other, so that the bars 79 face each other and, as they are arranged two by two, they are able to press. and forming between them said crushed part 96.
The ribbons 72 scroll in the same direction as the chocolate bar, on either side of the latter, these ribbons being placed between the chocolate bar and the chains 78. In the middle of each ribbon are spaced from distance to distance. perforations 80 (fig. 7), intended to receive the bars 79, of my die so that they can pass through the ribbons to form the crushed parts 96 of the chocolate bar 38.
The upper and lower ramps 75 carry on their external faces (fig. 5) a series of ronleanx 81, arranged in two rows on raceways 82 which are adjusted automatically and can be brought closer or far from each other. by means of nuts 83, the paths 82 being elastically supported by springs 84. The rollers 81 press on one of the sides of the tapes 72 and are intended to limit the spacing of the tapes in their movement on either side of the chocolate bar, the distance being able to be modified by means of the adjusting or adjusting nuts 83.
As can be seen from FIG. 3, the chocolate bar 38 is fed between the ribbons 72 and passes with these ribbons through the smoothing mechanism 43. As the ribbons move with the chocolate bar 38, the rakes 81 (fig. 5) accentuate. gradually the pressure of the ribbons on the bar, so that they compress Your bar between them.
When the chocolate bar 38 passes between the ribbons (fig. 6), the bars 79 passing through the ribbon press on each side, forming the crushed bands 96. The pressure of the bars 79 on the bands is determined by the surfaces of the bars. guide 77, but in all cases, this pressure is such as to prevent the chocolate from being forced back into the space occupied by the closure strips during the smoothing operation performed by the strips 72.
It will be noted in fig. 3 that the ramps 75 curve outwardly at their ends so that the chains which move on the guide surfaces 77 of the ramps 75 are arranged so as to engage the bars 79 in the ribbons 72 immediately before, and to release them immediately after the smoothing operation, smoothly. The faces of the bars 79 can be coated with rubber.
As is schematically shown in fig. 2, the various mechanisms of the machine are operated by an electric motor 106 by means of a gearbox 107. Thus, the pressing mechanism 42 is operated by the shaft 109 by means of the bevel gear train 110. A pair of the drums 70 of the smoothing mechanism 43 is actuated by a shaft 112 by means of a worm gear 113, 114 in synchronism with the other devices of the machine.
The tapes 72 are driven by their drums by means of the fingers 74 projecting on the drums and engaging in the perforations 73 of the tapes. Finally, the chains 78 carrying the bars 79 are actuated by the tapes 72 by means of the bars which pass through said perforations 80 of the tapes 72.
