(fig.

Fig. 22 is a perspective view of the control device of the apparatus of FIG. 1.
As can be seen in fig. 1, a web 29 of wrapping film is continuously fed from a spool 30, and is held under appropriate tension by tension rollers 31 and 32.
The spool 30 is mounted on a shaft 33 which is supported by a support 34. The strip 29 is then led into a folding device 35 where the edges of the strip are made to overlap on the upper part of a spoon 36 where a heating roller 37 seals the edges of the strip so as to form a casing. The casing is filled with chocolate (as will be described later in detail) by the spoon 36, while the chocolate is sufficiently hot and plastic and thus a casing is obtained which is incompletely filled with chocolate.
The chocolate casing, which will generally be indicated by the reference 38, passes under a leveling roller 39, then in a cooling device constituted by a long tunnel 40. The cooled casing is delivered to a mechanism 41 for forming the internal folds, a mechanism tab forming 42, a flattening mechanism 43, a severing mechanism 44, and finally to a conveyor 45 which receives the wrapped chocolate bars.
The chocolate casing is supported all along the apparatus by a plate 46 and by the lower part of the tunnel 40. Various varieties of chocolate, ordinary chocolate, milk chocolate or any other varieties of chocolate can be introduced into the casing. or, as shown by the apparatus of FIG. 1, simultaneously introduce chocolate and other filling products so as to obtain filled chocolates. In this case, the core or core composition is supplied by a hopper 47 which is suitably heated and provided with a stirrer 48. The chocolate is supplied by a hopper 49 fitted with a stirrer 50.
A pump 51 supplies the filling composition from the hopper 47 to the scoop 36, and a pump 52 delivers the chocolate from the hopper 49 to this scoop 36. The pumps are set as will be indicated below.
The spoon 36 comprises two concentric pipes, the central pipe bringing the filling substance from the hopper 47 and the annular part between the two pipes, bringing the chocolate from the hopper 49.
The wrapping tape 29 can be constituted by a regenerated cellulose film, optionally coated with various substances, gums, resins, waxes and, preferably, by an echilosic film 53a and a metallic film 53b (see Figs. 2 and 3). .
One of the edges 54 of the web or film is folded back so that when the web or film is made to form a casing, the surfaces which contact to be welded are both regenerated cellulose surfaces of the complex. 53sus. It is preferable that the complex 53a is covered with a thin thermoplastic layer on its outer surface; such a layer, based on nitrocelhiose for example, is commonly applied to regenerated cellulose films to make them impermeable.
The adhesion between the two longitudinal edges of the cellulosic complex can thus be obtained simply under the action of heat and a slight pressure.
The heating roller 37 constitutes the heat welding device. The spoon 36 has a relatively flat upper surface and the overlapping edges of the cellulosic complex 53a pass over this surface and under the roller 37. The roller 37 is heated by any suitable known method and is applied by means of a spring against. the flat upper part of the spoon 36. To avoid any danger of deformation of the wrapping strip due to the pressure exerted by the roller, the latter can be mounted between two other rollers x of slightly smaller diameter, so as to reduce excess pressure and deformation by the central roller. It is advantageous to use two rollers made of insulating materials, so as to reduce heat loss from the central roller.
The pressure exerted by the central roller can be easily adjusted, for example, by employing one or more springs acting on the axis of the roller.
The seal obtained by the action of heat is shown in fig. 3 at 55. It should be noted that there is formation of a very short tab 56 beyond the seal. This tab can be easily grasped between the fingers to detach the welded part and thus constitutes a means of removing the finished product from its envelope when it is consumed.
Instead of the two-layer complex 29 described above, it is possible to use a three-layer complex composed of a metal film comprised between two films of regenerated cellulose and waterproofed with a thermoplastic varnish. A three-layer complex then does not require the preliminary folding of one end of the strip, but it is somewhat more expensive.
The casing is partially filled with chocolate in an amount per unit length. If the casing is completely filled and distended, it assumes a circular section, which is not desirable. As shown in Figs. 4 and 7, the casing is filled so that the quantity of chocolate introduced is always less than that which would cause distension. The tube filled with fig. 4 and 7 does not have the required regular shape. To produce this regular shape, the filled casing, supported by the plate 46, is passed under a cylinder 39 which is disposed transversely to the casing and which extends at least over its entire width.
This cylinder is mounted idle and pivots freely on rollers 57 and springs pushing it towards the plate 46, a minimum distance to the plate 46 which cannot be exceeded.
The cylinder 39 flattens the casing and the minimum distance mentioned is chosen such that the casing when it is flattened is completely filled with chocolate and stretched, as shown in fig. 6. The air (if any) is pushed and forced in front of the cylinder, while the chocolate does not undergo a similar displacement during the operation.
After passing through the cylinder 39, the casing is in the form of a continuous and flat strip filled in such a way that its surface is even and smooth. The weight per unit length of the hose 38 thus obtained is constant.
In the particular device which has been described, the roller 39 is cylindrical, the plate 46 is flat, and the distance between them is uniform; in this way, the cho colat casing is generally rectangular in cross section, but with uniformly convex side edges (Figs. 5 and 8).
The amount of chocolate which is supplied to the tube per length is easily adjustable (as will be described more precisely later) and the distance between cylinder 39 and plate 49 can be changed accordingly. The thickness of the chocolate casing can be increased by this my die; thus the hose of FIG. 7 contains approximately twice as much chocolate per unit length as the casing of FIG. 4. Under all circumstances, the hose as it is obtained after passing under the roller 39 is uniform, of constant density and has a smooth and regular surface.
The flattened hose then passes into the cooling device 40 and leaves it with a plasticity determined as a function of the operations which will have to take place subsequently.
The cooled casing may be cut transversely into tablets by any suitable known method, or preferably subjected to a series of operations aimed at the production of isolated chocolate tablets, the chain being completely enveloped by the film of the casing. These operations will now be described in detail.
At the outlet of the cooling device 40, the hose is led into a device 41 for forming internal folds where it engages between two endless, flat, steel ribbons 58 (fig. 13 and 14) moving in the same direction, arranged laterally in relation to the hose and applying slight pressure to it. Each tape 58 passes around a pair of discs 59, 60 and as is clearly indicated in FIG. 14, the ribbons 58 are arranged such that the distance between them decreases slightly in the direction of advance of the chocolate casing. The hose is supported by plate 46 as it passes through device 41.
The tapes are perforated as indicated at 61 (Fig. 13) at regular intervals and each disc 59 has three equally spaced protrusions 62 shaped so as to be able to engage with the perforations 61. The protrusions 62 enter the opposite lateral sides of the hose. chocolate and, having a thickness less than that of the casing (see fig. 13), they are imprinted in the latter by forming pairs of opposed internal folds 63 (fig. 9 and 10) at regular intervals. The role of these internal folds will be explained quickly.
At the same time that the internal folds are made in the casing, as has been described, the upper surface of the casing engages under a plate 64. This plate prevents any possible deformation of the upper surface of the casing as a result of the movements of the chocolate. .
The hose which has received these internal folds then passes through a dividing device 42 comprising a pair of rollers 65, 66 each provided with a boss with a flat surface 67.
These two: bosses apply simultaneously on either side of the continuous chocolate casing, compressing the flat surfaces of the casing against each other (fig. 13), to form a closure tab 96 (fig. . 11).
When the internal folds are not practiced beforehand, the splitting operation causes local enlargements of the casing.
The folds 63, as shown in FIG. 9, push the material inside so that it cannot bring about local enlargements of the casing, as has been indicated. The folds 63 thus eliminate the detrimental effect of the dividing operation and the width of the casing is kept substantially constant. The cho colat pushed back by the bosses 67 causes the formation of extra thicknesses on the flat surfaces of the hose, near the closure tab 96.
To counter this deformation, the gut, which has taken the form of a string since the dividing operation, is then passed through an equalizer device 43 which causes the excess thicknesses to flatten.
Device 43 comprises two endless chains 68, 69 which are suitably supported by drums 74, 75, 76, 77
(fig. 16 and 17), so that the two chains are held vis-à-vis each other on a common path and advance in the same direction as the rosary. The chains 68, 69 carry at regular intervals projecting transverse bars which are arranged to work in pairs.
(see fig. 16). A support guide 72 (fig. 17) is provided for each chain which is supported on this guide by rollers 73. The guides 72 prevent the chains from moving apart and ensure correct application of the bars 70, 71 on the bars. closing tabs. The drums 74, 77 rotate about a horizontal axis, the chain 68 lying above the chain 69.
The chains 68, 69 are driven in synchronism with the string which circulates between them. Thus, the bars 70, 71 working in pairs, grip the closing tabs and tighten it strongly between them. The bars 70 are lined with rubber. The bars 70, 71 will thus firmly hold the closure tabs 96 and prevent the movements of the string during the equalization operation.
The particular arrangement described here is designed to be able to equalize simultaneously on the string three consecutive shelves separated by four closing tabs 96.
The assembly of chains 68, 69 is mounted as shown in FIG. 16, so that the bars 70, 71 grip six consecutive closing tabs 96 simultaneously.
The plates 78, 79 are applied two by two on the flat surfaces of each of the shelves of the chain, these plates being pushed towards each other by springs 80. The three plates 78 are carried by a carriage 86 which circulates by means of wheels 81 on a pair of raceways 82. The three plates 79 are carried in a similar manner by a carriage 83 which travels by means of the wheels 84 on the raceways 85.
The carriages 83, 86 are driven back and forth in the longitudinal direction of the chain by means of a heart-shaped cam 87. The cam is engaged between two opposed rollers 88 integral with a common slide 89 which is connected by connecting rods 90 to the carriages 83, 86.
The raceways 82, 85 rest on vertical columns 91 and each raceway is controlled at its ends by a cam 92, all the cams of a group having the same shape and being controlled simultaneously (see FIG. 16) by sprockets 93 and chains 94. The raceways 82, 85 are applied against the cams 92 by springs 95. The cams 92 and the springs 95 thus communicate upward and downward movements to the raceways, thereby ensuring an identical back-and-forth movement vertically to the carriages 83 and 86 normally to the direction of movement of the string.
The carriages simultaneously undergo a horizontal reciprocating movement thanks to the cam 87, and therefore the pressure plates 78, 79 which they support perform a continuous cycle; during part of this movement, the trays apply two by two to the surfaces of the tablets of the rosary and compress them together, while the rosary and the trays advance at the same time. After flattening the surfaces of three shelves of the web, the trays 78, 79 disengage and are pulled back to repeat the operation.
Each of the tablets of the rosary can be pressed only once only, but it is preferable to use the device which is shown in fig. 16 and which is designed to press each tablet three times between the plates 78, 79. The chocolate displaced by the pressing plates is forced towards the rounded side faces of the shelves and against the closing tabs 96. The side faces of each of the shelves of the Rosary beads will therefore be regular, smooth and of a beautiful appearance.
Flat surfaces will be smooth and free from wrinkles.
The equalizer plates 78, 79 can be adjusted at will on the carriages 83, 86 by means of nuts 97 (fig. 18), so that the minimum distance between two facing plates can be fixed within given limits. .
The lower chain 69 extends past the upper chain 68 (Fig. 17) at the end of the equalizer mechanism and thus supports the string of separate shelves.
The cutting device comprises a knife holder 98 which engages periodically and successively on each of the closure tabs 96 over their entire length, while the tabs rest on the bar 71 of the lower chain 69. A knife 99 passing through the center of the knife holder 98 (fig. 19 and 20) intersects the tab 96 in its middle in the direction of its length. Each bar 71 has a hollow groove 100 intended to receive the cutting edge of the knife, so that the latter cannot become blunt.
The assembly formed by the knife holder 98 and the knife 99 is mounted on a carriage 101 driven by a reciprocating movement on the raceways 102 above the chain 69. The carriage receives its movement. reciprocating a cam 103 which is actuated in synchronism with the movement of the string, so that the knife is driven with the string during cutting operations.
The knife holder 98 and the knife 99 are released independently of each other from the string. To this end, the knife holder 98 is supported by springs 104 which compress more and more easily than the springs 105 supporting the knife. A swinging lever 106 with horizontal axis controls the assembly of the knife 99 and the knife holder 98 and, due to the different reaction of the springs, it first applies the knife holder 98 to the closing tabs and then only the knife 99.
The carriage 101 is driven by reciprocating back and forth movement and a lever 106 receives its oscillating movement from the single cam 103 which is helical and has a groove 107.
The string of tablets is thus cut into sections, each of which constitutes a completely wrapped chocolate bar. Each individual shelf is deposited by the chain 69 in boxes 108 arranged around the periphery of a drum 109 which rotates around a horizontal axis.
A wrapped chocolate bar is placed in the box 108 which is located at the top of the drum 109 and is then retained there by suction until the box reaches the bottom of the drum. At this time, the box deposits the tablet either in a box or on a conveyor belt 45 which brings it to the inspection, finishing, labeling, additional wrapping and shipping services. Suction is applied to each box 108 through a pipe 111 which is connected to a main vacuum chamber 112 directly in communication with a vacuum pump.
According to another embodiment of the equalizer mechanism, the chains 68, 69 are replaced by endless steel bands carrying transverse bars intended to clamp the closing tab as described above. These steel strips are applied directly with a certain pressure on the shelves with a view to leveling the surface thereof in a continuous manner, without it being thus necessary to resort to the reciprocating movement of the device described above. These steel bands are supported by appropriate supports so that the bars clamp the closing tab two by two and on either side of the latter.
These steel bands pass over drums and carry, on one side or on both sides, perforations into which the pins or teeth of the drum will be inserted; the bands will thus be driven without any slippage. The lower steel strip is longer than the upper steel strip and the severing is carried out, as described above, on the extension of the lower strip.
Fig. 21 shows the assembly of a receiving mechanism in which each individual chocolate bar, as soon as it is cut from the string, is weighted sideways against a tablet 117, then in a suction box 108 on the drum 109. The tablet is carried by the box in a circular movement, then deposited on a conveyor belt 45 to be brought to the inspection and finishing services.
A pusher 113 which discharges the shelves in the boxes 108 is actuated from the side by an electromagnet 114 and returned to its initial position by a spring 115. The electromagnet 114 is supplied by a current source 116 and via the intermediary. a switch 118 controlled by the helical cam 103 so that the pusher 113 is actuated in synchronism with the cutting operation.
Fig. 21 also shows a part of a steel strip 119 mentioned above and having perforations 120. These strips are driven by drums having pins which engage in the perforations, which eliminates any possible slippage of the moving strip. .
The carriage 101, the raceway 102, the lever 106 and the knife 99 are also shown in FIG. 21. This disconnecting device operates as has already been indicated. It should be noted that the electromagnet is carried by the carriage 101 which moves it simultaneously with each shelf driven by the strip 119. The mechanism 41 for forming the internal folds, the mechanism 42 forming the closing tabs, the device equali seoir 43, the cutting device 44 and the conveyor 45, are all controlled together by a single motor 121 (FIG. 22) which makes them work in synchronism. These mechanisms are actuated via a chain 122, a pulley 123 and a belt 124.
The transmission can be common to two or more mechanisms, whenever this is advantageous. Thus, as shown in fig. 15, the motor transmission chain 121 drives a pinion 125 which is mounted on an axle 126. The axle 126 is supported by bearings 127 and carries a helical pinion 128 which drives a second helical pinion 129 mounted on an axle -vertical 130. A second vertical axis 131 is actuated by the pinion 129 by means of toothed wheels 132 and 133. The axes 130 and 131 carry the discs 59. The axis 126 actuates the wheels 65 and 66 by means of the gears 134. The transmission chain of the engine 121. also controls the cams 92 which are synchronized with each other by means of the chains 94 (fig .: 16).
It has already been mentioned that the different mechanisms which act on the cho colat casing are synchronized so that the pressure plates, the discs forming the internal folds, the compression elements and the set of knife and knife holders, always act in exactly the same places and that there is no lag. In addition, when it is desired to obtain filled chocolate, according to the device of FIG. 1, it is necessary to be able to regulate the flow rate of the two pumps 51, 52 very exactly, so as to be able to maintain a constant ratio between the core and the outer layer of chocolate. Finally, it is necessary to be able to control the speed of the whole apparatus and at the same time the flow of the chocolate on the belt 29. The diagram of fig. 22 shows a control device which satisfies these requirements.
The electric motor 121 drives a multiple pulley 138 via a variable speed drive 139, the pulley 138 operating the belt 124, then the pulley 123 and the chain 122 as already mentioned. The pulley 138 also actuates a pulley 140 via a belt 141, the pulley 140 actuating the input shaft of a new speed variator which drives a differential designated by the general reference 146, a pulley 143, a belt 144, a tensioner 145 transmitting the movement.
The differential 146 is composed of rings 147, 148 and satellites 149, 150. The variator 142 operates another variator 151 which transmits the movement to pulleys 153, 154 by means of a belt 155 and a tensioner 156 The output shaft of the variator 151 also actuates the pump 52 by means of a reduction gear which will be indicated by the reference numeral 157.
The sun gear 148 is integral with a toothed wheel 158 which actuates the pump 51 by means of another toothed wheel 159 and a speed reduction gear 160.
The arrangement of FIG. 22 shows that the speed of the pulley 123, and hence the speed of the internal fold forming, dividing, equalizing, sec tioning and receiving devices is directly related to the speed of the motor 121 and can be set by the inverter 139. The speed of pumps 51 and 52 must be set correspondingly at the same time. The variable speed drive 142 allows the adjustment of the speeds of the chocolate supply device by the two pumps 51, 52, so that the mass of chocolate supplied per unit length of the strip 29 can be varied as described above. top with reference to fig. 4, 5, 7, 8. Finally, the relative proportions between the flow rates of the pumps 51, 52 can be varied by means of the variator 151.
The arrangement which has just been described has the advantage of allowing variations in the proportions between kernel and chocolate while maintaining a constant total flow. It is preferable to employ a variation field such that it is possible to stop either the pump 51 or the pump 52, in which case the scoop 36 is only supplied with a single substance.
The pumps 51, 52 can be stopped by separating the clutch claws 161, 162.
The legs 96 of the string may be welded by the action of heat, during their formation or thereafter. The dividing rolls 65, 66 are then heated by any suitable known means.
The boss 67 of the dividing cylinder 65 (Fig. 13) may be lined with rubber. The degree of precision which is obtained with the apparatus thus described can be easily appreciated by the fact that the weight of the tablets does not vary beyond + 2 2 / o for tablets of 25 g. It is understood that the example of embodiment described is in no way limiting and that the invention also applies to any variant in the same context.
REVENDI (: ATIONS:
I. A method of manufacturing articles wrapped in a heat-softening material, characterized in that the material is continuously poured in the softened state into a casing formed by a moving wrapping band and of which the longitudinal edges are folded over and joined, which the incompletely filled casing is then passed through a flattening and leveling device which gives it a regular shape, then it is cooled and cut into tablets.
