<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Une conception claire des traits caractéristiques améliorés qui constituent la présente invention et de'la construction et opération d'appareils commerciaux typiques contenant ces perfectionnements pourra être obtenue en se reportant aux dessins ci-joints qui forment partie de la . présente spécification. En se reportant aux dessins, et plus particulièrement aux figures 1 et 2, l'installation perfectionnée pour la fabrication de sacs qui y est montrée comprend en général une paire de galets de guidage 7 destinés à recevoir une matière tubulaire plate 8 enroulée de manière lâche pouvant être scellée par la chaleur, en partant d'un gabarit ou matrice et en délivrant le tube longitudinalement en-dessous d'un élément de chauffage rotatif-ou d'une roue formatrice de manière fixe à l'intérieur de la matière tubulaire 8 au moyen d'une console 11 pour produire un joint longitudinal continu 12 scellable par la chaleur''; une paire de galets d'étirage 13 coagissent avec les parois opposées du tube plat à joints longitudinaux pour faire avancer ce tube d'une manière constante ;

@
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

The present invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of bag-shaped containers and more specifically relates to the manner of effecting the sealing of multi-layered tapes or elongated tubes of thermoplastic material or the like to form bags for receiving various articles. .
The main object of the present invention is to provide improved means for rapidly and effectively effecting heat sealing of a multilayer tape or loosely wound elongated tube of heat-sealed material. plastic, both in the longitudinal direction and in the transverse direction to produce a succession of

bag-shaped containers.
It has heretofore been customary in the packaging of various articles and in the market placement industry of various goods, to produce bags or the like, starting from elongated sheets advancing in the longitudinal direction, of sealing materials. heat such as the materials known as "Pliofilm", "Polyethylene" or the like, by arranging or winding the sheet so as to give it a multi-layered shape or a tubular shape, by heat sealing its adjacent edges longitudinally overlapping loosely and then cutting the longitudinal seam tube into successive sections and then transversely sealing one end of each separate section to form a bag.
In that these thermoplastic sheet materials are subjected to static electricity and adhere to each other when subjected to frictional contact with fixed and rotating guides, and heating at the joints must be continued for long periods of time. Relatively long periods of time in order to produce perfect joints, considerable difficulty has previously been encountered in forming longitudinal joints on one of the walls of an advancing tube-wound tape without sealing the opposing side walls of the tube between. '' them to the joints, and forming the transverse end closures and delivering the finished bags without causing them to stick to the conveyor belt which carries the longitudinal jointed pipe sections past the transverse heat-sealing devices .
Therefore, one of the main objects of the present invention is to provide a simple but efficient and automatically functioning apparatus to avoid these difficulties and thus to assure rapid production of a succession of perfect bags.
Another important object of the present invention is to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
providing an improved device for positively removing finished bags formed of thermoplastic sheets in rapid succession from the conveyor belt which advances them into the heat seal area.
Another important object of the invention is to provide an improved device ensuring the production of an effective longitudinal seal, heat sealed along the middle part of one of the walls of a tape wound in the form of a ribbon. tube, in thermoplastic sheet, without the heat sealing exerting a detrimental action with regard to the opposite wall of the flat tube by gluing the opposite walls together.
Yet another important object of the invention is to provide an improved automatically operating mechanism for enabling the handling of relatively thin and very flexible thermoplastic sheets while producing in rapid succession successive bag-shaped containers of various sizes and shapes.
These objects and advantages, and still other more specific objects and advantages of the present invention, will become apparent from the detailed description which follows, from which it will be noted that the principle of the invention is constituted by the provision of devices. for the rapid and efficient formation on the material of longitudinal joints of side walls and transverse bottoms without drawbacks due to the static electric charge of the advancing material.
A clear understanding of the improved features which constitute the present invention and of the construction and operation of typical commercial apparatus containing these improvements will be obtained by reference to the accompanying drawings which form part of the. this specification. In this drawing, the same reference numerals indicate the same parts or parts

While the improved bag forming apparatus has been shown and described to apply to an installation specially adapted to produce successive bottom sealed flat bags, having longitudinal joints disposed at the middle part along one of the walls. and starting from a loosely wound, tubular thermoplastic material, it will of course be understood that it is not desired to unnecessarily restrict the application of the characteristic features to the illustrated embodiment. specific descriptive terms employed the broadest possible interpretation consistent with the description.

@
The jig for initially converting the thin, flexible thermoplastic tape into a loosely wound bag 8 as it continuously advances to the heat sealing facility is of old and well known construction. but the apparatus for forming the longitudinal seam is an improved and important assembly capable of producing the longitudinal seam 12 very efficiently.
The thermoplastic material employed in the production of such bags is preferably transparent "Pliofilm" or "Polyethylene" or the like which receives a charge of static electricity and is therefore able to stick or adhere to adjacent surfaces of the same. material when they are frictionally engaged by fixed metal guides or by guide rollers,
so great care must be taken to prevent the opposing walls of the tubular material 8 from coming into contact with each other and heat sealing at the zone of formation of the longitudinal seam. Heating at this zone must also be applied for a relatively long period of time in order to ensure a perfect longitudinal seal 12 and all of these desirable results are achieved with the improved apparatus shown in detail in Figures 4 and 5.
The heating element or impeller 9 is preferably relatively heavy in weight and has a diameter large enough to ensure good peripheral contact over a long distance between its heated periphery and the free outer edge 26 of the top wall 27 of the heater. tubular material folded flat 8, and this wheel 9 can be heated in any suitable manner and is tiltably supported by an arm 28 so that it can tilt up and down to compensate for a slight lack of uniformity in the raw material or allow
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
its removal from the active position.
The internal reaction pad 10 is formed of elastic, relatively soft material, and has a considerable width in the direction of advance of the raw material 8 in order to provide support for the material.
8 over the entire sealing zone and to ensure maximum placement of the tube which advances between the wheel 9 and the outer edge 26, and the free inner edge 29 of the tubular material 8 is covered by the free outer edge 26 of the upper wall 27 and advances over the upper part of the pad 10, while the lower wall 30 advances below this pad and is thus separated from the upper wall 27 by a considerable space at the heat-sealing zone (see figure .., 4 and 5)
. The console 11 which supports the fixed buffer can be fixed to the frame of the machine and arrives in the tubular flat material 8 which is. loosely wound and advance longitudinally between the upper and lower overlapped free edges 26-29, and the free end of this bracket 11 has an arm 31 extending in the lateral direction which supports a shelf 32 for the buffer 10. This shelf Additionally keeps the bottom wall 30 at a distance from the top wall 27 of the tube, thereby doubly preventing the bottom wall of the tube from coming into engagement with the top wall 27 of the seal area.
The draw rollers 13 coact with the longitudinally sealed tubular material $ to advance the latter along the first heat seal zone and to deliver the flat tube to the knives 14 which can be operated in such a manner as to provide a better fit. cutting the material 8 into sections 15 having the desired length.
In order to prevent the upper draw roller 13 from coming into contact with the freshly formed longitudinal seal 12, this roller is preferably formed with a median gap 34 of reduced diameter as shown.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
in Figure 2 and the endless transfer belt 10 is adapted to promptly remove the various successive sections 15 from the cutting area, and is actuated at a speed such that it will spread the sections 15 at the end so as to allow appropriate cooperation with successive transverse heat sealing bars or elements 18 of rotor 17 to which belt 16 delivers the bag sections in rapid succession.
The bars 18 of the rotor 17 can be heated in any suitable manner and are slidably enclosed in radial notches 36 formed in the rotor. As shown schematically in Figure 3, each bar 18 has one or more rods 37 extending inwardly, each rod being provided with a plate 38 coming into engagement with the spring 39 which constantly pushes the corresponding bar back. laying inwardly in the notches 36 and towards the axis of the rotor, and the internal end of each rod 37 supports a roller 40 coacting with a fixed cam 41 formed so as to force the adjacent bars 18 outwardly to the - beyond the periphery of the rotor and in the sealing position,
but only after each tube section 15 to be cross-sealed has been brought into advancing engagement with the periphery of the rotor by the reinforcing conveyor 19. This endless conveyor 19 is formed of a relatively heavy and durable belt. and has an arcuate portion 12 which comfortably advances and engages the periphery of the rotating rotor 17 and terminates in a horizontally disposed, inversely curved lower portion which covers an inversion drum 44 disposed considerably beyond the periphery lowest of the rotor.
The arcuate belt portion 42 is adapted to press the successive bag sections 15 against the bars
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
successive seals 18 project outwardly and co-operate with the periphery of the rotor to frictionally advance the sections 15 as the transverse end, or bottom seals 20 are formed, and this frictional propulsion tends to produce a static electricity charge in the final bags 22.
The endless element or bag release tape 21 is provided in order to positively release the final successive bags
22 of the rotating drum or rotor 17 and more particularly of the belt conveyor 19, from the adhesion caused by the static electric charge and by sticking due to the heat sealing, and this tape 21 can have a relatively small width by preferably acting with the bags along the joints 12 where it will not interfere with the production of effective end seals 20. The tape 21 advances around and past the rotor 17 between the conveyor portions 42, 43 and successive bags 22; and when it leaves the periphery of the rotor, it cooperates with the belt 23 to engage each of the opposing side walls 27, 30 of each successive final bag 22.
The tape 21 as well as the belt 22 pass along the conveyor part 43, which is inversely curved, and around the drum 44, and advance considerably beyond the lower part of the portion 43 so as to ensure the positive release. bags 22 of the conveyor 19 and its delivery to the container 24.
While the normal modes of operation and operation of the improved bag-forming apparatus should result from the above detailed description, a brief summary of the operation will be given below. The heat sealing wheel 9 and the bars 18 can be heated and receive electric current so that they will only work while the raw material is being fed
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
8 and the current, will be stopped when not feeding the raw material.
The spinner wheel 9 normally cooperates with the fixed internal pad 10 to form a continuous seal longitudinally closed by heat along its overlapped edges 26, 29 of the top wall 27 of the raw material loosely wound into a tube shape which advances rapidly in the initial heat sealing zone thanks to the stretching rollers 13; and the pad 10 and the shelf 32 prevent the bottom wall 30 from coming into engagement with the top wall 27 at this initial zone. The stretching rollers 13 deliver the material 8 with a longitudinal joint to the knives 14 which cut the successive sections 15 and deposit them on the transfer belt 16.
This transfer belt 16 separates successive sections 15 at the end and delivers them at the desired spacing to the final transverse heat-sealing zone.
The bars 18 do not act on the sections 15 unloaded by the belt 16, until an appreciable part of each successive portion 15 has been introduced between the periphery of the rotor 17 and the reinforcement carrier 19, and then the cam 41 acts to force the bars 18 outwardly against the action of the springs 39 and in heat sealing contact with the adjacent ends of the sections 15 to form the end or bottom seals 20. The final bags are then transported away from the rotor 17 and are positively removed from the belt conveyor 19 by the tape 21 which advances in the middle between this conveyor and the successive bags 22, and the tape 21 then cooperates with the belt conveyor 23 to remove the finished bags 22 from the installation in rapid succession.
It should be noted that both the longitudinal seal 12 and the transverse seals 20 are effectively formed by subjecting

the stock of bags at the heating elements 9, 18 for rather long periods of time; and that the internal pad 10 positively prevents exposure of the bag wall 30 to harmful heat in the initial seal area, while the tape 21 ensures the positive release of the finished bags 22 from the conveyor 19 after leaving the area. final heat seal.
The relatively heavy and large heating wheel 9 coacts with the soft, resilient pad 10 to produce considerable contact between the periphery of the wheel and the bag stock 8, while the large diameter of the rotor 17 cooperates with the arcuate portion. extended length 42 of the carrier to similarly provide a long seal period between each bar 18 and the adjacent bag section 15.
From the above detailed description it is apparent that the present invention provides an improved, automatically operated apparatus for rapidly and efficiently heat sealing a multi-layered tape, or elongated, coiled tube. loosely, of thermoplastic material, both lengthwise and transversely to produce successive bag-shaped containers with the greatest precision and with minimum material loss. Successive bags 22 are formed without interference from the static electric charge of the thin flexible stock, and are positively removed from the plant by the tape 21 coacting with the longitudinal joints 12 to prevent interruption in the. end transverse closure or seals 20.
The improved mechanism can be employed to produce sack-shaped containers from various sheet-like materials, and having various sizes and shapes, and has been found to be very satisfactory and the results obtained.

sales have been good. While the apparatus has been shown and described to act on successive tube sections 15, it can of course be easily modified to seal lengthwise and crosswise a continuous tape simply by placing the knives 14 in position beyond the length of the tape. sealing rotor 17.
Likewise, when the tube is cut into successive sections before introduction into the r ,, tor 17, it suffices to adjust the moment of the operation so that the transverse sealing bars 18 coact with the rear edges of the sections. 15 successive instead of acting with the front edges as shown.
It is understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction and operation as described and that various modifications may be made within the scope of the following claims.
