d'amener le tenon 31 en regard du butoir 32; simultanément. un déplacement du levier 23 dans le sens de la flèche 42 jusque, par exemple, en regard de l'encoche suivante 43 amène le tenon 32 en 44 par sinte du déplacement de la coulisse 30 dans la direction de la flèche 47 dans une position telle que, par suite de la rotation de la. roue 1 dans le sens de la flèche 45, il frotte contre le butoir 32 et assure son déplacement ainsi que celui de l'élément. 7 correspondant dans le sens de la flèche 46 (fig. 4) pour augmen ter le diamètre de la roue 1;

The device shown comprises a toothed wheel 1 fixed on the axis 2 of the crankset of a cycle, this crankset being intended to be dragged rotatably by means of pedals 3; axis \? is mounted in a bearing 4 forming part of the frame 5 of this cycle.
The toothed wheel 1 has a rim 6 com taking three elements 7; each of these is carried by an arm 8 having two parts 9 and 10 with telescopic interlocking connected by a coil spring 11. Part 9 is integral with the corresponding rim key element 7 and is. provided longitudinally with a series of orifices 12; part 1.0 is integral with the hub 13 of the. wheel 1 and has an axial longitudinal bore 54 in which the part 9 can slide.
Each part 10 carries, pivotally mounted, a pawl 14 with two branches 15 and 16; the latter is provided with a tenon 17 of the tines through an opening 48 of this part 1.0, to come in engagement. in one of the orifices 12 of part 9, in order to immobilize or lock the latter; the other branch 15 is intended to be lifted by a pusher 18, forming part of a control member carried by the frame 5 of the cycle. The ratchet. 14 is biased by a return spring, not shown.
The control member comprises a support 19 provided with two sockets 20 (fig. 7) which can slide on two supports 21 fixed to the frame 5: and a ball joint 22 mounted on the latter, provided with an operating lever 23 of which the 'free end 25 is intended to come into engagement in stops 26 formed in a cross member 51 fixed to the uprights 27 and 28 of the frame 5.
The support 19 is assembled by means of a bar 24 at the. ball joint 22 which is also provided with a control part 29; this is intended to move a slide 30 due to carry the support 19 and which is provided with a tenon 31 capable of engaging a stopper 32 with which each of the elements 7 is provided on its face facing the support. 111.
The hub 13 of the toothed wheel 1 of the pedal carries, between the arms 8, three intermediate arms 33 each comprising two parts 34 and 35 with telescopic interlocking; the part 34 integral with the hub 13 is pierced with a longitudinal duct in which the. part 35 which is provided with an arc 36; the latter is arranged between the contiguous elements 7 which, for this purpose, have longitudinal countersinks 37; the walls of each of the latter are provided with facing guide grooves, 38, in which is. intended to move a tenon 39 carried by the corresponding end of an arc 36.
The arcs 36 are intended to support the drive chain of the cycle between the elements 7 of the toothed wheel 1.
The crankset being rotatably driven, the device shown operates as follows: To slide part 9 of each arm 8, that is to say to vary the diameter of toothed wheel 1, operating lever 23 is moved in the direction of arrow 40; this movement makes it possible, on the one hand, to move the support 19 in the direction of arrow 41 (FIG. 8) so as to bring the pous evening 18 into contact with the branch 15 of the pawl 14; this pusher 18, due to the key rotation of the wheel 1, lifts the branch 15 which comes, at 42, driving the branch 16, the tenon 17 of which releases the corresponding part 9, and, on the other hand;
to bring the tenon 31 opposite the stopper 32; simultaneously. a movement of the lever 23 in the direction of the arrow 42 until, for example, opposite the next notch 43 brings the tenon 32 to 44 by the movement of the slide 30 in the direction of the arrow 47 in a position such that, as a result of the rotation of the. wheel 1 in the direction of arrow 45, it rubs against stopper 32 and ensures its movement as well as that of the element. 7 corresponding in the direction of arrow 46 (fig. 4) to increase the diameter of the wheel 1;
after moving along the pusher 18, the branch 1: i escapes. the latter and the pawl 14, under the action of the return spring, not shown, ensures the locking of the element. 7 corresponding: when the wheel 1 has made a complete tone, the three elements 7 have been moved by the same length, in the direction of arrow 46, and the lever 23 is. introduced. in notch 43, ee which has the effect. to move the support 19 and the tenon 31, in the opposite direction of the arrow 41, which do not come. more in touch.
with the pawl 1.4, respectively the stopper 32; to reduce the diameter of the wheel 1, the lever 23 is dragged in the opposite direction of the arrow 42, after having been moved in the direction of the. arrow 40; therefore, part 9 of each arm, under the action of the corresponding spring 11, moves in the opposite direction to the. arrow 46 until the part 50 of the stopper 32 of the corresponding element 7 bears on the tenon 31; the locking of each part 9 of the arms 8 is carried out as before, then the lever 23 is engaged in the stop 26 corresponding to the chosen speed.
When the elements 7 are moved in the direction of arrow 46, or in the opposite direction to the latter, they drive by means of the tenons 39. sliding in the grooves 38, the ares 36 and, consequently, the part 35 of the arms intermediaries Ô3; for this purpose, each of the arcs 36 is rotatably mounted on the corresponding part 35.
A tensioner, not shown, attached to the frame #> adjusts the tension of the cycle chain.
