Selector switch. The present invention relates to a selector switch comprising a brush holder carriage, a contact bank and a tape drive mechanism for moving said brush holder carriage along said contact bank. According to the invention, this driving mechanism comprises two separate ribbons attached, on the one hand, to the carriage, and, on the other hand, each to an actuator of said drive mechanism to give said carriage a back-and-forth movement.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, an embodiment and a variant of the selector switch according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a top view of this embodiment.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view thereof, partially in section.
Fig. 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
Fig. 3A represents the clutch electro. Fig. 4 is a section taken along line 4-4 of FIG. 5.
Fig. 5 is a section taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 4.
Fig. 6 is a view showing the members of FIG. 5 in a different position.
Figs. 7, 8 and 9 relate to the variant and correspond respectively to FIGS. 4, 5 and 6 of the first realization.
The selector switch shown has a brush holder carriage 1 which can slide on horizontal guide rods 2 and 3, the ends of which are fixed in parts 4 and. 5 which form part of the frame of the contact bank that the brush holder trolley must explore by a reciprocating movement. The housing of the carriage can be closed by front plates 6 and upper 7. The carriage 1 carries the brushes which rub against the pins or contacts 8 of a rectilinear bench 9.
The main frame 10 supports, back to back, two banks of similar pins. The frame 10 is constituted by two symmetrical parts 11 and 12, provided with assembly edges 13 and 14 which will be assembled by suitable means such as screws 14a passing through the re edges 13 and 14, as well as the vertical uprights 15 placed between ledges 13 and 14.
The secondary frame which supports the essential parts of the drive mechanism of the brush holder carriage is fixed by screws 16 to the left post 15 of the main frame. On part 17 of this secondary frame is mounted a rotary assembly 18 which can be driven by clutch with a vertical shaft 19 in continuous rotation. The clutch mode is that which is applied in the automatic telephony system well known as the Rotary system. The clutch mechanism therefore preferably comprises a flexible toothed disc 20 rotating about the same axis as the rotary assembly 18 to which it is attached. Disc 20 is located above support 17, while rotating assembly 18 is below.
A toothed wheel 21, mounted on the shaft 19, meshes with the flexible disk 20 when the latter is not bent downwards to suppress the gearing effect. So that the gear of the flexible disc 20 and of the wheel 21 is good, the teeth of the wheel 21 are cut only on the underside of the latter and do not include the entire thickness of the wheel. the upper face covers all the teeth, so that, when the flexible disc 20 rises, it cannot escape the grip of the wheel 21 which it could otherwise protrude by elasticity.
The clutch is controlled by an electro 22 (fig. 3A) mounted on the frame supporting the drive members. This electro is horizontal, as seen in the figures and it acts on a frame 23 pivoting at 24 around its lower part. The upper part of the frame 24 is extended by an arm 25 which extends above the flexible disc 20 in the vicinity of the region where the graining is to take place with the star wheel 21.
In the rest position, the hand arm 25 effectively holds the flexible disc 20 out of engagement with the toothed wheel 21, thanks to the action of a spring 26 attached by its upper end to an adjustable part 27 and pulling by its lower end on a pin 28 projecting laterally (through the housing 29 of the electro 22) of an arm 30 fixed to the frame 23 near its pivot and oriented in the opposite direction to the arm 25. When the electro 22 will be energized, the arm 25 will rise and the flexible disc will be released to engage with the toothed wheel 21, and to be driven by the latter.
The rotary assembly 18 includes a short shaft 31 which rotates in a sleeve 32 placed in the support 17 (see Fig. 4). A thread of the upper part of the shaft 31 receives a hub 33 carrying the flexible disc 20. This hub comprises a lower plate on which the disc 20 rests and a proper hub which surrounds the shaft 31. The disc 20 is prevented from rotating freely on its hub by virtue of an external flat thereof, the shape corresponding to this flat being given to the central opening of the disc 20.
A washer 38 forming a seal is placed above the disc 20 and the assembly is tightened by a nut 36, while another nut 37, located below the support 17, prevents any vertical movement of the shaft 31 .
On the lower threaded part of the short shaft 31 engages the hub of an arm 39, a projection 40 of which (see FIG. 5) penetrates into a notch 41 of the shaft 31, which ensures the drive of the arm. 39 by the rotating shaft. Above and below the plane of the arm 39, the shaft 31 is surrounded by cylindrical sleeves 42 playing a spacer role and provided with flanges forming a plate at the upper part of the upper sleeve and at the lower part of the sleeve. lower sleeve. Washers 43, placed on either side of the plane of the arm 39, surround the cylindrical parts 42 and serve as a lining to receive the hubs of an upper pulley 44 and a lower pulley 45.
A packing washer 46 is interposed between the upper sleeve plate 42 and the nut 37. Another nut 47 is tightened at the lower end of the shaft 31 to ensure the tightening of all the parts mounted on the part. lower of the shaft 31. Each of the pulleys 44 and 45 has spokes 48 which by tent from the hub 49 and terminate at the rim on which the groove is located (50 for the pulley 44 and 51 for the pulley 45).
We see in fig. 1 and 2 a tape 52 which almost completely surrounds the lower pulley 45, on the rim of which it is attached at 59a. The tape 52 is guided leaving the pulley 45 by the two rollers, 53 and 54, following which it takes two parallel strokes determined by a spacer roller 55 and a small return pulley 56. The stroke of the carrier carriage. brushes 1 is carried out between two end points marked by the locations of the roller 55 and of the return 56.
The front strand of the ribbon 52 is attached, as seen in FIG. 3 (and also in Figs. 1 and 2) to a part 57 at right angles, carried by the brush holder carriage. A similar endless ribbon 58 is fixed at a point of the upper pulley 44 and is guided by this pulley as well as by another set of rollers 53 and 54 where it leaves the pulley to take its two parallel strokes of which the parallelism is ensured by another spacer roller 55 and by another small return pulley 56. The rear run of the tape 58 is attached to a small support 59 at the rear of the brush holder carriage (see fig. 3). .
The two tapes 52 and 58 are preferably made of steel or bronze and are about 5 to 6 hundredths of a millimeter thick. The tape will be drilled at suitable points to be fixed by screws on the pulleys and on the brush holder.
With the arrangements described, if the pulley 45 turns clockwise, the brush-holder carriage will move from right to left and the tape 58 will then force the pulley 44 to turn counter-clockwise. 'a watch.
Conversely, if it is the pulley 44 which comes driving, in the direction of clockwise, the brush-holder carriage will move from left to the right, while pulley 45, which has become an idle pulley, will turn in counterclockwise.
The two pulleys 44 and 45 are actuated, one at a time, by an arm 60 of which part 39 forms part which is assembled on the shaft 31. Part 39 bends below the plane of its hub. A finger 61, located in this plane and projecting from the hub, serves as an attachment point for a coil spring 62 which finds a housing in a notch in the inflected part of the part 39. The other end of the compression spring 62 attaches to another finger 64 which extends the inner end of a part 65 which can slide between guides 66 projecting vertically from the edges of the arm 39. The longitudinal movement of the part 65 is limited by a pin 67 implanted in the arm 39 and passing through an opening in the part 65. The peg 67 which is provided with a head also serves. to hold the part 65 on the arm 39.
At its outer end, the part 65 is provided with gripping members on the. inner face of the rims 50 and 51 of the pulleys 44 and 45.To this end, two rollers 69 are mounted on a vertical pivot 69a (see fig. 4) carried by two small arms 70 fixed to the outer end of the part 65.
When the brush holder carriage moves from its extreme left position to its extreme right position, or vice versa, each of the two pulleys 44 and 45 rotates approximately 180 degrees. As a result, the points where the shaft 60 will have to apply its action to one of the rims and stop applying it to the rim of the other pulley are 180 degrees from each other, as seen on the. fig. 5.
So that the rollers 69 can exert their action on the rims of the pulleys, each of the rims is provided at the appropriate point with a connection piece 71 having a housing 72 for the roller near its front end in the direction of movement and provided also an inclined plane 73 (playing the role of cam for the roller) at its rear end.
In the position shown to the left of fig. 5, we are at the end of a 180 degree stroke with drive by the lower pulley 45 and at the time of the pulley change which requires the introduction of the roller 69 in the housing 72 of the rim of the. upper pulley 44. The device of the upper pulley 44 is shown in section. In the position of FIG. 5, the upper roller 69 of the arm 60 is pushed rearward by the cam 73 of the rim of the upper pulley, which necessarily releases the other roller from the housing 72 of the part 71 of the lower pulley.
Fig. 6 shows the positions a few moments later when the two rollers 69 are pushed back to the maximum and the one that was in the housing 72 of the lower pulley is completely free from it, while the upper roller 69 is ready. to fall into the housing 72 of the upper pulley, which it will do a few moments later. So that the tapes 52 and 58 cannot slip on the rims of their respective pulleys, each tape is attached to the pulley at the point which is furthest to the left when the brush holder carriage is in the middle of its stroke.
In the mode of operation which has just been explained, the motor arm 60 actuates the lower pulley from the position shown to the right of FIG. 5, in broken lines.
When the electro 22 is energized, the flexible disc 20 meshes with the toothed wheel 21 and the arm 60 will drive the lower pulley from its right position to its left position, at the same time as the brush holder carriage is will move from right to left, exploring the entire field of selector pins until the switching element 74 (see fig. 1) carried by the carriage hits the stop 75 of the selector frame; . which will determine the return movement of the carriage to its right position.
It is at this moment that the transfer of the action of the arm 60 from the lower pulley to the upper pulley will take place, and the brush holder carriage will be driven from left to right. At the end of the return stroke, the electro-clutch 22 will be de-energized and the movement will stop.
During a trolley race, one of the pulleys is leading and the other turns idle in the opposite direction.
In fig. 7, 8 and 9, there is shown a modification according to which the change of pulley is controlled by a part located outside the rim. The smoothing neck piece 65a extends to the outside of the rims by a finger 76 which passes between the rims of the two pulleys and can abut against a roller 77 carried by a fixed pivot. The finger 76 is profiled so that the contact with the roller 77 is progressive, and the sliding part 65a will thus undergo an inward movement against the antagonistic action of the spring 62.
The pin 78 passing through the arm 60a and protruding from both sides constitutes the member for gripping the connectors 80 placed inside the rims of the pulleys. This peg will be driven to the right and come out of the recess 79 of the connector 80 in which it was engaged, while, when the finger 76 has finished straddling the roller 77, the sliding part 65a will move outwards. and the pin 78, opposite to the one which has just been released, will fall into the recess 79 of the connector 80 of the other pulley.
The other parts of the apparatus represented by FIGS. 7, 8 and 9 are identical to those of the first preferred embodiment.
In this second embodiment, the connectors 80 have no role of cam and the rims of the pulleys are not subjected, as in the first preferred embodiment, to the forces transferred to the outer roller 77.
Fig. 8 is drawn at the moment when the drag is going to be transferred from the lower pulley to the upper pulley, and fig. 9 shows the components once this transfer has been completed, the peg 78 having fallen into the recess 79 of the connector 80 of the upper pulley.
