Nun ist aber eine gute Lichtechtheit der Wirksubstanz schon des halb unbedingt notwendig, weil sonst bei der sehr geringen Konzentration des Stoffes auf der Oberfläche eines aufgehellten Substrates der optische Effekt. im Tageslicht viel zu rasch verschwindet und nur die ;

Man erhält sie beispielsweise aLis Saliey -säure durch Umsetzling ihrer Hydroxylgi-tippe nach an sich bekannten Methoden mit. 1, 2, 3 oder mehr Mol Äthy lenoxyd oder mit Alkoxyalkyl- halogenid en, worauf man gegebenenfalls nach Freisetzung der Carboxylgruppe durch Ver- seifun s.;
Be handelt man hierauf die 4,4'-Di-(2"-hydroxy- benzoylamino) - stilben - 2,2'- sulfonsäure bzw.
Process for the preparation of a whitening agent. 1: s has been around for a long time. known that aeyl derivatives of 4,4'-diamino-stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid have the property of acting as an optical brightening agent due to blue fluorescence in daylight, in that they do not have their own yellowish color. Compensate for completely white substrates with blue radiation.
The technical evaluation of this property soon showed that the nature of the acyl radicals is not indifferent, yes, your acyl radical. plays a decisive role in the usability of the end product in several respects. For example, an optical brightening agent is only sufficient for modern requirements if it has one. emits pure blue fluorescent light, i.e. when its shade appears neither too red nor too green.
For example, because of its too red shade, 4,4'-dibenzoylamino-st.ilbene-31,2'-disulfonic acid, which was proposed at the time as an optical brightening agent for textiles, has never achieved greater practical importance. In contrast, they draw the benzoylated derivatives of 4,4'-diamino-stilbene disulfonic acid according to the invention by a much purer blue fluorescence.
Another requirement for modern optical lead means is a high fluorescence intensity of the active ingredient, once for purely economic reasons, but also because of the slightly yellowish inherent color of the teehni see 4,4'-diamino - stilbeii-2,2'-disulf onsäui -e and their benzoyl derivatives, which are in high concentration on a white substrate. can interfere with the optical brightening effect.
For this reason, too, efforts are made to use compounds that fluoresce as intensively as possible, which, even in the smallest concentrations, bring about a strong brightening of the substrate. While the fluorescence intensity of 4,4'-dibenzoylamino-stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid is very low, individual derivatives suitably substituted in the benzene ring of the benzoyl group exceed the basic structure many times over.
For example, 4,4'-di- (4 "-aminobenzoylamino) stilbene -2,2'-distilfonic acid is a strongly fluorescent optical brightening agent, but has the disadvantage of very poor light fastness.
However, good lightfastness of the active substance is absolutely necessary because otherwise the optical effect of the very low concentration of the substance on the surface of a lightened substrate. disappears far too quickly in daylight and only that;
The inherent color of the decomposition products @ remains, which instead of lightening leads to increased yellowing.
The derivatives of 4,4'-di-amino-stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid emptied according to the invention have not only an increased fluorescence intensity compared to the aforementioned compounds, but also a very good light fastness.
Very recently, a process for the preparation of 4,4'-di- (2 "- alkoxy-benzoy laniino) -stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acids has also become known, which are said to represent valuable optical fluorescent agents by being characterized by blue fluorescence and good lightfastness.
In that process it is stated and particularly emphasized that only those compounds which are exactly substituted according to the process, the only small variation being a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon residue. can have from 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkoxy radical, have the described good properties as optical Aufhel'lungs- mit.tel.
In contrast, the surprising observation has now been made that modified 4,4'-di- (2 "-alkoxybenzoylamino) -stilberi-2,2'-disulfoic acids also present valuable, blue fluorescent and borrowed elite optical brighteners .
Instead of an aliphatic, saturated hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the 2-alkoxy group of the benzoyl radical, these have a substituted -Xalkyl group which is never substituted. These new compounds of the general formula
EMI0002.0031
wherein R is a lower substituted alkyl 1 radical. means., not only represent a valuable range of technology,
on the contrary, depending on the character of the substitutes, they also have physical properties which favor their use for very specific purposes, as will be explained in more detail below.
The new dibenzoyl derivatives of 4,4'-diamino-stil'bene-2,2'-disulfoic acid substituted according to the invention are obtained by treating an aqueous solution of its alkali metal salt at a lower, customary or slightly elevated temperature Presence of mineral acid dulling or acid binding agents and, if appropriate, inert agents with water.
Visible, organic solvents for (the invention, well usable benzoyiating agents, with aey animals, i.e. derivatives of salicylic acid which are suitable for aylation and which are alkylated on the hydroxyl group by substituted alkyl tipping.
Examples of such acylating derivatives are the halides of 2- (ss-l @ ethoxyethyl-oxy) benzoic acid, 2- (ss-ethoxy-ethy 1-oyz-) benzoic acid and 2- (ss -halogen) ät.lioxy-äthyl-oxy) -benzoic acid, der-IL (ß-chloro-äthyloxy) -benzoic acid and similar in question.
They are obtained, for example, in the form of Saliey acid by converting their hydroxyl type according to methods known per se. 1, 2, 3 or more moles of ethylene oxide or with alkoxyalkyl halides, whereupon, if necessary, after liberation of the carboxyl group by saponification;
, these with thionyl chloride or phosphorus chlorides converts to the carboxylic acid chloride, with the possible simultaneous replacement of hydroxyl groups by halogen or chlorine. On the other hand, those which contain the 1111 alkyl radical of the alkoxy group of the benzoyl radical according to the invention are more valuable than these aforementioned compounds. However, these cannot be represented by the known method described above.
They must be obtained in a new way, which is also a characteristic of the invention in the process for producing this particularly valuable class of optical brightening agents. As known and stated above. has been, -earth aliphatic bonded hydroxyl groups in the action of halo-reducing agents on the carboxylic acids replaced by halogen,
this cannot easily be replaced by a hydroxyl group without cleavage of the benzoyl alcohol in the end product. On the other hand, these compounds can easily be obtained if the -l, 4'-di- (2 "-acyloz-y-ben-zoy lamino) - stilbene - '', '?' - disulfonic acids, which can be easily obtained by the method described above,
is subjected to saponification under mild conditions in an aqueous solution, in which, remarkably, the aeyloxy groups are easily saponified to free hydroxyl groups without the slightest change in the benzovlamino bonds. Be treated on this to 4,4'-di- (2 "-hydroxybenzoylamino) - stilbene - 2,2'-sulfonic acid or
their salts in aqueous solution with. alkylating agents containing hydroxyl groups, the particularly valuable 1-hydroxyalkyloxy-s-Lrbstituierien compounds are formed very easily and in good yield.
Examples of hydroxyalkylating agents that can be used in this process according to the invention are glyeolelilorhydrin, Clyeolbromhyin, Epich.lorhydrin, Epibromhydrin, Cxlycerinchlorhydrin, Glycerinbromhyin and so on. In this way, it is easy to introduce the hydroxylethyl and 2,3-di-hydroxy-propSyl radicals.
The A: icylation can take place in aqueous-alkaline or in alcoholic-alkaline solution or suspension. The hydroxyalkyl-substituted compounds according to the invention are distinguished, in addition to intense, blue fluorescence and good lightfastness, by the property that they can be emulsified very easily to give solutions or dispersions of high content, and furthermore because
that the aqueous solutions of their alkali salts are much less sensitive to salt than the known dibenzoylderiv ate of 4,4'- 1) ianiino-stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid, which even at low concentrations from their solutions with the addition of common salt or Glauber salt turn out very easily. They are therefore particularly good as additives to textile treatment agents such as soaps, synthetic wetting agents and cleaning agents, etc. suitable.
The new dibenzoyl derivatives of 4,4'-diamino-st.ilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid substituted according to the invention or their alkali salts are technical-grade powders with a more or less yellowish color, which look in water to form practically colorless solutions dissolve easily.
As a result of their substantivity, they are particularly well suited for the treatment of cellulose fibers in textile treatment agents and textile treatment liquors. to produce a strong, optical lightening effect on these fibers and the goods made from them.
The present patent now relates to a process for the production of a whitening agent. The process is characterized in that 4,4'-di-salieoy 1 amino-stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid with a compound introducing the radical -CH, -CH2-OH, such as, for example, ethylenehlorliydrin or '#thylenoxyd ,
treated until the phenolic hydroxyl groups disappear.
The new lightening agent obtained, 4,4'-di- [2 "- (r, -oxy-ethoxy) -benzoylla.mino] -stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid, is a yellowish colored powder, which has a good affinity for cellulose fiber.
Example: 65.4 parts of 4,4'-di-salieoylamino-stilbene-2,3'-disulfonic acid sodium, 8 parts of sodium hydroxide and 1300 parts of alcohol are briefly heated until everything has dissolved. is, and after the addition of 16.1 parts of neutral ethylene ehlorhydrin boiled for 1 hour on the R.üekfluss.
The disodium salt of 4,4'-di- [2 "- (fl-oxv-ätlioxy) -) benzoyla.mino] -stieben - 2,2 '- distifonic acid separates, together with common salt, from the alcoholic solution as weak yellowish, sandy body and can be cleaned by dissolving in water. Thanks to its celhilose-affine and fluorescent properties, this product is well suited as a brightening agent for slightly yellowish looking cellulose fiber products ..
