1-I et. 15.
Method for fixing a metal assembly element and device for implementing this method. The present invention relates to a method for fixing a metal assembly element and to a device for implementing this method.
We know a container assembled by metal elements applied to one face of each of the panels of the container. The elements are provided with a number of teeth cut from the material and integral with them, and each tooth is formed of a relatively flat portion passing through the corresponding panel. The tip of each tooth is folded back against the opposite face of the panel, and. this point is curved longitudinally over its entire length, so that its end is bent and penetrates the thickness of the panel.
Each tooth moreover has a longitudinal rib con cave extending over the curved tip to keep it applied against the opposite face of the corresponding panel.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method for fixing a metal assembly element having a certain number of projections cut out in the element and forming one body therewith, on a wooden panel, making it possible to form at the same time the reinforcing rib extending along the curved end of each tooth.
According to the invention, this method is characterized in that these projections are pushed through the panel until one face of the panel is applied flat on one face of the assembly element and As the tip of each protrusion emerges on the opposite face of the panel, the tip of each protrusion is gradually bent and bent to penetrate the opposite face of the panel, until the entire protrusion is curved and that the outer surface of the curved part is sunk below said opposite face of the panel, and a rib is stamped in the. curved part of each projection to reinforce it and to improve the fixing in the panel.
The device for carrying out the method is characterized by movable shaping tools, each having a concave curved face for bending the protrusions longitudinally and a convex rib on this face to form a concave and longitudinal rib for reinforcement in the protrusions. curved, and by means for guiding these shaping tools against the protrusions. This process helps. the. manufacture of cases assembled by metallic elements, and the use of relatively thin and inexpensive woods ensuring rapid and inexpensive manufacture.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, a container obtained by an embodiment of the process according to the invention and an embodiment of a device for carrying out this process.

Fig. 25 is a partial section, on a large scale, taken on line 25-25 of FIG. 23. FIG. 26 is a view, on a large scale, of the underside of a swimming tool 12.
From the examination of fig. 1, we see that the crate is made with five relatively thin pieces of wood, which make up the sides 1 and 2, the ends 4 and 5 and the bottom 3. It is also seen that the boards of the crate are rigidly assembled. and permanently by two bands or metal assembly elements 8 having above all a cross section in the form of an angle.
In each wing, angle-shaped assembly elements are cut and folded back teeth intended to pass through the juxtaposed boards of the body, as described below, so as to assemble these boards rigidly and permanently without having to 'It is necessary to use nails, screws, slats or other fasteners. It emerges from fig. 1 to 17 that the teeth of each wing of the assembly elements are in a triangular shape, extend substantially at right angles to the corresponding face and that they are substantially planar.
On this subject, it is necessary to insist on the fact that each (slow) is oriented in the direction of the grain of the wood constituting respectively the sides, the ends and the bottom of the. crate. This. arrangement is clearly indicated on the fig. 1, 2, 16 and 17, the grain of the wood being indicated by arrows. The aim of this arrangement is not only to facilitate the assembly, but also to cut the fibers of the wood as little as possible, so as to maintain as great a mechanical resistance as possible.
On the other hand, this arrangement. minimizes waste. as a result of bursting panels, waste that would be. more important if the plane of the teeth was not substantially parallel to the grain. wood. Finally, this agency ment allows. to pass the boards through the teeth with a deviation as small as possible from their initial orientation, which ensures a suitable alignment of the (slow) and an exact correspondence with the respective shaping and clamping tools which will be described later.
\In the. preparation of the constituent parts of the body, before their assembly in the form shown in fig. 1, two connecting elements in the form of an angle are used, having the necessary length and dimensions, and each having teeth cut out in each wing and distributed at. substantially equal intervals over their entire length. The particular arrangement of the teeth with respect to each other, and with respect to the grain of the wood of the boards, emerges clearly from FIG. 1.
To assemble the elements 8 with the boards, these two elements are placed parallel to a table T, made integral with the fixed plate of a conventional press, press type. cut. Each element 8 is placed on the table T, and the sides 1,? as well as background 1 are. laid flat on the tips of the teeth of the corresponding wings of the elements as shown in fig. 19. Using appropriate tools, such as those shown in figs. 19 to 26, the boards are pressed from top to bottom, so that the upright teeth 10 are brought through the boards (Figs. 19 to 25).
Sides 1 and 2 as well as the bottom 3 are spaced apart from each other, and the standing wing of each element 8 has a V or miter notch, directly above the joint between the sides and bottom, so that the boards can then be brought to the position shown in fig. 17.
Referring to fig. 19 to 26, it can be seen that the device for implementing the method described, that is to say for causing the teeth 10 to be driven in through the planes of the body, to bend them and to practice in at the same time the reinforcing rib 9c in the curved tip of each tooth comprises a number of similar shaping tools 12 fixed in a tool holder 11 and a presser plate 14 which is normally spaced from the tool holder 11 and hand held in the position shown in fig. 19 by springs or rubber blocks interposed between the tool holder 11 and the presser plate 14.
Of course, the pressure plate 14 is provided with the usual guide pins and stops, the arrangement being such that this plate is normally maintained, with respect to the shaping tools 12, in the position indicated in FIG. . 19. These means are well known and it seems unnecessary to describe them in detail. Likewise, the usual reciprocating press, generally called a die-cutter, is not shown in the drawing, because presses of this kind are well known. The constitution and the arrangement of the guide pins and the stops of the pressure plate 14, as well as the method of mounting the tool holder 11 and the table T on a press, can be realized in forms different.
In the drawing only vertical sections of the shaping tools have been shown; these sections seem to be the only essential and necessary ones to give a good understanding of the various operations by which the assembly elements and the panels of the body are linked together. It is understood that the tool holder 11 comprises appropriate means for its mounting on the punch holder of a conventional punching press, punch holder driven in a vertical reciprocating movement with respect to the anvil or at the stationary table T, this table itself being fixed to the fixed plate of the press.
Accordingly, and as shown in Figs. 19 to 26, it should be understood that the assembly elements 8 rest on the anvil or the table T, while the shaping members, constituted by the pressure plate 14 and the tools 12, etc., are moved. from top to bottom to engage with the corresponding panels or planks and the teeth of the elements 8.
The device which is shown in the drawing is essentially a polish attachment of the connecting elements to the sides and the bottom of the crate. It is therefore understood that the shape and dimensions of the anvil T, as well as the. shape and dimensions of the pressure plate 14 and of the tools 12, 18, etc., can be modified to adapt to the shape and the particular dimensions of the boards and the elements 8, when it is desired to ensure the assembly by the method described.
It is therefore important to note the relative position of the inner faces of the concave curved ends 1 \ 3b of the shaping tools 12, with respect to the outer faces of the teeth deformed by these tools, in order to understand the process employed in the assembly of the various elements. For this purpose, it is necessary to refer again to figs. 19 to 23.
Fig. 19 shows it. position of the boards 1, 2 and of the bottom 1 with respect to the end teeth 10 of the assembly element, as well as the position of the tool holder 11 with respect to the planks, strips or assembly elements and to the table T, when the press is ready to start the assembly work, the various elements being placed on the table.
Fig. 20 shows the relative position of the various elements when the teeth have been driven through the boards of the body, and just before the moment when the shaping tools 12 come into contact with the tips of the various teeth.
Likewise, FIG. 21 shows the relative position of the different parts immediately after the moment when the shaping tools 12 have contacted the tips of the teeth and begin to bend and bend them.
On the other hand, FIG. 22 shows the relative position of the different parts towards the end of the working stroke of the press, i.e. the relative position of the different parts substantially at the time when the convex curved rib 12c of each tool 12 begins to shape. the reinforcing rib in the curved tip of each tooth. Fig. 23 shows the relative position of the different parts at the end of the working stroke of the press, that is to say the relative position of the different parts at the end of the bending and strengthening operations of each tooth.
It can be seen, for example, that the pressure plate 14 first comes into contact with the wooden planks of the box and drives the teeth 10 through the wood under the action of the pressure exerted by the press and which is transferred. setting the plate by the springs 12s, sufficiently powerful so that the teeth 10 penetrate the wood and pass through the boards before the pressure plate 14 does not move significantly compared to the tool holder 11.
It goes without saying that the lowering movement of the tool holder 11, relative to the table T, is continuous, and that FIGS. 20 to 23 simply show the relative position of the different parts at certain determined points dle the downward stroke of the tool holder 11, in order to make it easier to understand the process intended to bend, bend and reinforce the teeth.
Figs. 20 and 23 respectively indicate the position of the different parts at the start and at the end of the bending of a tooth 10. It will be noted more particularly the shape and the arrangement of each shaping tool 12. It can be seen that the end of each tool 12 has a convex curved stamping rib 12c placed in the axis of the concave curved underside 12b of the shaping tool 12 (Fig. 26).
Each curved stamping rib therefore comes, during the downward movement, in contact with the tip of a tooth, and gradually and continuously bends or bends the free end of this tooth in the manner indicated by the fig. 20 to 23. It goes without saying that similar tools act on the teeth 9, to bend them progressively. in the manner indicated by fi-. 13, until bringing them to the. form represented by FIGS. 1-I and. 15.
It follows that a little before. the moment. where a curved tooth takes its final shape, the strength (the compressed material of the body panel increases and exerts sufficient strength to allow the stamping of a reinforcing rib into the curved tip of the tooth.
It emerges from the above that the method described. consists of. Simultaneously press the flat teeth of the fastener through the different panels until the tip of each (slow emerges on the opposite side of the panels, to bend the protruding tip of each tooth sideways and towards the bottom on the face of the respective panels, in order to noticeably bend it.
in an arc of a circle while it is not yet in contact with the panel, prolong the folding and bending until the end of the point enters the corresponding face of the panel # and stamping a con cave reinforcement rib running the entire length of the curved tip of each tooth as the tip of each tooth is driven into the corresponding face of each board.
It is important to note that this process pre-shears the fibers of the panels slightly on the inner faces, so that each tooth is separately and simultaneously bent to a position below the inner face of the panels. This arrangement makes it possible to avoid the presence of protruding metal parts inside the body, parts which could injure the hands of persons handling the boxes.
The sides and the bottom of the body are therefore assembled in a single press stroke and fixed to the corresponding wings of the assembly elements 8, they then occupy the position shown in FIG. 16, after which the sides are raised by hand to assume the position shown in fig. 17.
In this fig. 17, it can be seen that each end of the assembly elements is supplied with lugs 8g which are fixed on the corners and protect them. These tabs are respectively folded on the edges of the corresponding panels, and their free end is curved to penetrate into the panel, as seen in FIG. 12 which represents the corresponding tab 8f.
As indicated, sides 1 and 2 are raised to the position shown in fig. 17, after the sides and bottom have been attached to the connecting elements. Then the ends 4 and 5 are placed simultaneously or separately in the partially completed box, so that, when the desired pressure is exerted on each end, the teeth 9 are driven through the corresponding ends and then bent and bent of the manner described for the teeth 10. The ends are thus fixed firmly on the assembly elements and the finished case is obtained as shown in FIG. 1.
It should be noted that the protective tabs 8f of the assembly elements are at the same time folded over the upper edge of the corresponding end, and bent until they enter in the manner shown in FIG. 12 and described above for the legs 8g.
In fig. 25, it can be seen that each shaping tool 12 has a flat 12a and that its fixing to the tool holder 11 is provided by clamping screws 15.
It emerges from the foregoing description that the method described is extremely simple and effective for permanently assembling the sides, the ends and the bottom of a box by means of metal elements. This process should not be confused with the usual bending or riveting operations which do not ensure a solid and permanent assembly. In this regard, it should be particularly emphasized that the process described makes it possible to firmly and firmly fix the panels of the body on the assembly elements.
Of course, it is to be expected that there will be variations in the thickness of the boards, but, thanks to the process of bending and stapling teeth 9 and 10 to the boards, and of reinforcing, each curved tooth, a perfect fixation is always obtained, even if the thickness varies quite considerably. In addition, the bending and stapling process differs from conventional riveting in that the. rectilinear part of each tooth passing through the boards retains its initial shape when the point is bent and stapled in the corresponding panel. It is known that, during riveting, the rectilinear part between the base and the curved tip is also deformed in an irregular manner, and these irregular deformations make it practically impossible to obtain a permanent and rigid assembly.
It is also important to note that the tool 12, of small diameter, which shears the fibers on the. inner face of the boards near the curved tooth and the assembly element, materially contributes to increasing the strength of the body.
In summary, the method of fixing described allows the use of suitable sides, ends and bottom which do not require any special cutting, shaping or grouting. These panels being prepared, shaped connectors are produced. angle as shown in the drawing, each element having a number of teeth cut in each wing and folded faeon that each tooth sinks into the corresponding panel in a plane substantially parallel to the grain of the material.
The assembly elements being. placed horizontally, the sides and the bottom i are fixed by driving the teeth of the assembly elements through the panels, these teeth being. then gradually and simultaneously folded and bent to staple them in the corresponding panels, after which the sides are raised and the ends are put in place and fixed in the same way as the sides and the bottom, this using a separate set of tools operating on the same principle. In this way, a body of solid and durable construction is obtained.
It is important to note that the teeth cut in each wing of the assembly elements are relatively close to each other, and that they are spaced from the horizontal edges of the assembly elements. This arrangement is important because it allows the two horizontal edges of each element to be kept firmly against the body, to prevent them from catching on to other boxes. The cutting of the teeth at a point away from the horizontal edges also contributes to the importance of keeping smooth and. free from ripples the horizontal edge of each element, unlike what would happen if teeth or other fasteners were cut near the horizontal edges of these elements.
