use les filets de la vis-mère suivant une spirale, -ou, si le patin, est en un -étal tendre, c'est @ce dernier qui s'use prématurément. Il est évident qu'une telle usure interdit tout usi nage de précision, De ce qui précède;
Ce déplacement angulaire du bras 30 provoque: 10 l'oscillation du doigt 27 et l'engage ment du peigne 25 avec les filets de la vis- mère 10; 20 par l'intermédiaire des secteurs dentés 111, 110, 104 et de la crémaillère 102, le dé placement vers la droite du dessin de la tige 101 et la compression du ressort 100;
30 le déplacement angulaire du bras 106 jusque dans la position représentée au dessin, pour laquelle le doigt 107 coopérant avec l'extrémité dudit bras interdit tout déplace ment de la tige 101 sous l'action du res sort 100;
40 par l'intermédiaire du poussoir 103, l'oscillation du doigt 61 et le déplacemént de la réglette vers la, -gauche du dessin jusque dans la position représentée. Pour cette posi tion .de la réglette, l'extrémité 40 de la cré maillère 38 est sortie de l'évidement 80 et a provoqué une avance transversale de la cou lisse 6 amenant la pointe de l'outil à fleur de la surface -de la pièce à usiner;
Ce déplacement angulaire du maneton 60 provoque l'oscillation, en sens inverse des aiguilles d'une montre, du levier 5 i et l'actionnement dans ce même sens de la roue à rochet 53 par l'intermédiaire du cli- quet d'avance 55;
Dans. cette fig. 2, les or ganes correspondant à ceux de la fig. 1 sont désignés par les mêmes chiffres -de référénce. Le retour de la coulisse longitudinale après chaque course @de .travail est commandé exac- tement de la même façon que dans la forme d'exécution selon la fig. 1;
Automatic threading lathe, The most popular automatic threading lathes at present include a device for controlling the movements of the cross smooth necks of the tool holder having a lead screw driven in rotation cooperating with a sliding shoe parallel to the axis of the tool holder. lead screw and can oscillate in a plane perpendicular to this axis.
Cams cause at the start and end of the working stroke the engagement, respectively the disengagement of the shoe with the lead screw, The movements of the shoe, parallel to the axis of the lead screw, control the movements of the longitudinal slide of the tool holder. These turns have certain drawbacks, due to the fact that the skate must be able to perform movements in two planes perpendicular to each other, on the one hand, and, on the other hand,
the fact that the release of the shoe from the lead screw at the end of the working stroke is caused by a cam. In fact , to allow the shoe to perform movements in two perpendicular planes to each other, the manufacturers have generally made this pad integral with a sleeve mounted on a rod which can slide in its housings.
It is obvious that such an assembly is difficult to achieve when high thread precision is required, the clearances having to be reduced to a minimum. In addition, this sleeve generally has a collar with an adjustable longitudinal position.
This collar has a nose intended to cooperate with the cams at the start and at the end of the working stroke of the tool. Now, it is clear that the range that said nose can present to the cam which engages it is at most equal to the pitch of the thread of the lead screw. The nose and the -came wear out quickly and the shoe release control may be performed one turn too late.
As a result, the tool risks getting stuck in the material and being either broken or in any case overheated to such an extent that its resharpening is obligatory.
However, after each resharpening, all the adjustment of the lathe must be carried out again and checked if it is desired to obtain a precision thread. In-addition, depending on the degree of wear of the nose cooperating with the cam, it: it is possible that the shoe remains half-engaged with the # mother screw. In this case, there is rapid local wear of the lead screw and the pad.
Finally, the disengagement movement of the shoe cannot be abrupt since it is commanded by a cam which must necessarily perform a certain angle of rotation to perform this command. However, this angle of rotation corresponds to an angle of rotation of the lead screw. Consequently, the skate:
uses the threads of the lead screw in a spiral, -or, if the pad is in a soft-slab, it is the latter which wears out prematurely. It is obvious that such wear precludes any precision machining, From the above;
we. You may realize that the lead screws and the pads of known automatic threading lathes wear out relatively quickly and above all very irregularly, so that it is necessary to check them frequently.
In order to eliminate some of the aforementioned drawbacks, some manufacturers have articulated the pad holder directly on the longitudinal slide of the tool-holder carriage.
Such a construction, however, is not desirable, since it makes the tool-holder carriage heavier, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, this construction does not eliminate the drawbacks due to the control of the pad .by two. cams, one for controlling its release, the other for controlling: its engagement.
Finally, this command of the engagement and disengagement of the skate by means. of two cams does not allow reliable control at the high cutting speeds permitted by the special steel tools currently in use.
In fact, for the control of the engagement of the pad with the lead screw to be carried out in an irreproachable manner, it is necessary for the pad holder sleeve and therefore the entire longitudinal slide of the tool holder to perform its return movement in starting position at a time in any case well below the times corresponding to a complete revolution of the cams.
It is clear that the higher the cutting speed, the greater the speed of rotation of the cams and the longer: the period of time still admissible for the return of the carriage is small. Indeed, the speed of rotation of the cams can be lower than that of the lead screw.
However, these two speeds must be synchronized and, moreover, the speed of the cams cannot be lower than that of the lead screw, otherwise the engagement and disengagement of the pad takes place over a very large angular course of the screw. mother, which causes excessive wear of the latter, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the need .de provide an insufficient longitudinal dead travel to allow entry and exit of the chisel.
Gold; the special steels currently used allow cutting speeds such that it is no longer possible to guarantee a sufficiently rapid return of the carriage and it follows that the pad holder comes into contact with the lateral face of the the cam for controlling the engagement of the pad with the lead screw, The lathes with two lead screws, one for controlling the working stroke,
the other for controlling the return stroke of the carriage does not avoid wasting time. Indeed, if they allow machining at all -desi reed cutting speeds, the control of the return of the carriage to the rest position is always the cause of a great loss of time.
The subject of the invention is an automatic threading lathe comprising a workpiece-carrying spindle and a tool holder with crossed slides, the longitudinal movements of which are controlled by a pad cooperating with a lead screw. This lap differs from the laps known to date by the fact that it has a snap-action relay, put into action at the end of each working race and causing the release of the skate at a speed independent of the speed of spindle rotation.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, a schematic perspective view of an embodiment of an automatic threading lathe.
The lathe shown comprises a spindle 1 rotating in bearings 2 arranged in a frame 3 of the lathe. Spindle 1 is driven in rotation by a motor M and carries the part 4 to be machined. A tailstock 5 maintains the latter in position at its free end.
This lathe comprises a tool-holder carriage with crossed slides, the transverse slide 6 of which is guided by fitted guides; in the frame 3 and carries the longitudinal slide 7 guided by guides arranged in the transverse slide 6. This longitudinal slide 7 is subjected to the action of a return spring 8 tending to keep it engaged with a stop rest 9 with adjustable position.
The longitudinal slide 7 is connected by transmission members to a lead screw or "boss" 10. The latter is rotated by the motor M and by means of a train of interchangeable gears. This lead screw is rigidly mounted on a shaft 11, one end 12 of which is capped, and slides inside a sleeve 13.
This bushing rotates in a bearing 14 arranged in the frame of the lathe and carries two gears 15, 16 each fixed rigidly on one of its ends. 15 is engaged with a toothed wheel 17 integral with the shaft of the spindle 1. The shaft 11 is therefore driven in rotation by the motor M; furthermore, it is connected, by means of a coupling 18, to a pusher 19 sliding in a guide 20 formed in the frame of the lathe.
A finger 21, engaged in a groove 22, prevents any angular displacement of the pusher. At its free end, this pusher carries a finger 23 engaged in a transverse groove 24 of the slide 7. The pad or comb 25 slides in a housing 26 fitted in the frame. A control finger 27 engaged in a housing 28 controls the displacements of the comb causing it to engage and disengage from the lead screw 10. This finger 27 is rigidly mounted on an axis 29 rotating in bearings arranged in the frame of the lathe.
The axis 29 also carries a lever 30, the free end of which cooperates with a cam 31 causing the engagement movements of the pad each time the carriage returns to the rest position. This cam 31 is integral with a shaft 32 driven in rotation by the motor M and by means of the gears 17, 15, 16, 33, 34 and a coupling 35. The release of the shoe is, on the other hand, caused by a hard-acting relay activated at the end of each working stroke of the tool. This relay is constituted by a spring 100 mounted on a rod 101 sliding in housings arranged in the frame and carrying a rack 102 and a pusher 103.
The rack 102 is engaged with a toothed sector 104 rigidly mounted on an axis 105 and comprising an arm. 106, the end of which cooperates with a finger 107. The latter is mounted on a pin 108 whose angular displacements are controlled, against the action of a return spring 109, by the displacements of the longitudinal slide 7.
A second toothed sector 110 fixed on the axis 105 is in engagement with a toothed sector 111 fixed on the shaft 29, and therefore mechanically connects the rod 101 to the finger 27 which controls the movements of the pad.
The pusher 106 is connected by chains of transmission members: 10 to a crank pin 60 for controlling the advance of the tool in depth between each pass; 20 to an oscillating finger 61 engaged in a groove 62 of the slide 41 and controlling the movements of the latter and therefore the withdrawal and engagement of the tool with the workpiece, machining at the end and at the start of each past.
The engaging and disengaging movements of the driving and driven parts of the coupling 35 are manually controlled. To this end, one of the parts of the coupling 35 is connected by means of transmission members to an operating member L.
The latter is further connected, by a chain of transmission members, to a socket 36 carrying a toothed sector 37 engaged with a rack 38 sliding in a guide 39 arranged in the transverse slide 6. The end 40 of this rack cooperates with. the lateral face of a slide rule 41, in a guide 42 of the slide 6. This guide 42 is made in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the guide 39 and a res out 43 tends to keep the lateral face of the slide in contact with the end 4û of the rack.
The operation of the member L therefore simultaneously causes: 10 — the engagement of the driven and driving parts of the coupling 35; 20 the setting in transverse position of the working start of the tool-holder carriage by the displacement of the transverse slide 6 against the action of its return spring 43 which tends to keep it in the rest position,
that is to say in engagement with a stopper 44 with adjustable positions. The bush 36 also carries a nose 45 co operating with two levers 46, 47 with a view to maintaining the transverse slide in the working position against the action of the return spring 43.
These levers therefore constitute with the nose 45 two locks, the opening of one of which is controlled at the end of each pass, while the opening of the other is controlled at the end of machining of the thread.
The levers 46, 47. Are pivoted on one of the arms of a lever 48 itself pivoted on a fixed axis 49. The other arm of this lever 48 carries a roller 50 -cooperative with a universal cam 51 mounted on an axis 52 rotating in bearings (not shown) arranged in the frame of the lathe. This axis 52 also carries, rigidly fixed to it, a ratchet wheel 53 and a toothed wheel 54.
An advance pawl 55 cooperates with the ratchet wheel 53 in order to cause, between each pass, an angular displacement of the universal cam 51, and by means of the lever 47 a displacement, in the direction of the workpiece. in machining, the transverse slide 6 of the tool carriage. This advance pawl 55 is articulated on a lever 57 pivoted idle on the axis 52 and is subjected to the action of a spring 56 which is intended to keep it in engagement with the teeth of the wheel 53. The lever 57 is connected by a rod 58 to the tool depth advance control crank. This consists of a disc 59 comprising a crank pin 60 with an adjustable radial position.
As indicated above, the disc 59 is mechanically connected by a chain of transmission members to the rod 101 subjected to the action of the spring 100.
A retaining pawl 63 integral with an axis 64 rotating in bearings arranged in the frame of the lathe, cooperates, under the influence of a return spring 65, with the ratchet wheel 53. This pawl 63 is intended to retain the rbue rbue 53 in angular position during the return stroke of the feed pawl 55. The release of this retaining pawl is caused by. end. machining by returning the transverse slide to the rest position.
For this purpose, the slide 6 carries a control ramp 76 cooperating with a finger 77 which is associated with the axis 64. One 46 of the bolts is released from the nose 45 at the end of each return stroke. rest position, of the longitudinal slide, that is to say after each pass, by means of a pusher 66.
This latter is mechanically connected to a finger 67 guided in a bore made in the transverse smooth neck 6 and cooperating, under the action of a spring 68, with a ramp 69 integral with the longitudinal slide 7.
The second latch 47 is released from the nose 45 at the end of the travel of the transverse slide 6, that is to say during the last advance in depth of this slide. To this end, this lock is actuated by a pusher 70 actuated by a rack 71, subjected to the action of a return spring 72. The crankshaft is actuated, against the action of its spring, by the toothed wheel 54 which is engaged with a pinion 73 itself engaged with the rack 71.
The rest or starting position of the rack is fixed by a stop 74 with an adjustable position by means of the screw 75. The rack being demodically connected to the universal cam 51, this stop 74 also fixes the starting angular position of the rack. : said cam.
When the roller 50 reaches the top of the cam 51, the rack 71 causes the release of the lever 47 from the nose 45 by means of a chain of transmission members.
The longitudinal slide 7 is provided of sufficient length to allow the fixing on its upper face of several tool holders 78. Each of the latter is provided to receive a tool 79 intended for cutting a thread.
The operation of the automatic threading lathe is, as can be appreciated from the foregoing, similar to that of known lathes of this type.
When the lathe is at rest, the lever 106 is released from the finger 107, the coupling 35 is in the disengaged position, the transverse and longitudinal slides rest on their respective stops 9 and 44. The rack 71 is also on its stop 74, the lock 46 is released as well as the lock 47, finally, the end 40 of the pusher 38 is housed in a recess 80 of the strip 41.
With the motor M under tension, the lathe is started up by maneuvering the manual device L, clockwise, to bring it to the position shown in the drawing. .
This maneuver causes: the engagement of the driving and driven parts of the coupling 35; 2o the actuation of the transverse slide 6 out of its rest position, against the action of its return spring, into its advanced position for which the tool is not yet engaged with the part 4; 30 the engagement of the lever 47 with the nose 45 under the action of a spring.
This position of the transverse slide is fixed by the position of the stop 74 which defines the starting angular position of the universal cam 51.
During this movement of the slide 6, the ramp 76 has, in fact, left the finger 77, so that the retaining pawl engages with the ratchet wheel under the action of the return spring 65.
When the coupling 35 is in the engaged position, the shaft 32 rotates the cam 31 which causes angular displacement of the arm 30, the end of which rests on its profile.
This angular displacement of the arm 30 causes: 10 the oscillation of the finger 27 and the engagement of the comb 25 with the threads of the lead screw 10; 20 by means of the toothed sectors 111, 110, 104 and of the rack 102, the displacement to the right of the design of the rod 101 and the compression of the spring 100;
The angular displacement of the arm 106 as far as the position shown in the drawing, for which the finger 107 cooperating with the end of said arm prevents any displacement of the rod 101 under the action of the res out 100;
40 by means of the pusher 103, the oscillation of the finger 61 and the displacement of the strip towards the left of the drawing into the position shown. For this position of the strip, the end 40 of the mesh 38 has come out of the recess 80 and caused a transverse advance of the smooth neck 6 bringing the tip of the tool flush with the surface. the workpiece;
50 by means of pusher 103, the clockwise rotation of the depth advance control crankpin.
This angular displacement of the crankpin 60 causes the anti-clockwise oscillation of the lever 5 i and the actuation in this same direction of the ratchet wheel 53 by means of the feed pawl. 55;
60 the angular displacement of the universal cam 51 integral with the ratchet wheel 53, -displacement which causes, by the in @ ermdiaixe of the roller 50, the levers 47, 48, the nose 45, the toothed sector 37 in taken with the chainring 38, a displacement of the latter which activates the transverse slide 6,
against the action of its return spring, and causes the tool to advance in depth and engage the latter with the part being machined.
The lead screw being in rotation and the comb engaged, the latter undergoes an axial displacement towards the line of the drawing. It drives the slide 7 in its movement, so that the part 4 is rotated. by motor M, tool 79 cuts a thread.
At the end of the working stroke, a stop 81 activates a pusher 82 against the action of the spring 109 and causes the release of the latch 107, 106 which maintains the relay in the armed position (position shown).
Consequently, the relay constituted by the spring 100 is put into action and causes: the sudden and rapid recoil of the comb; 20 the movement to the right of the drawing of the strip 41 until the recess, 80 is opposite the end 40 of the mesh 38. the spring 43 causes the slide 6 to retreat as well as the disengagement of the tool from the workpiece; 30 clockwise actuation of pawl 55.
The comb being released from the lead screw, the spring 8 pushed the longitudinal slide 7 back to its rest position; defined by the stop 9. At the end of the return stroke, the ramp 69 actuates the finger 67 against the action of its spring 68 and causes the lever 46 to disengage from the nose. 45 (position shown in the drawing).
The shaft 32 continuing to rotate, the cam 31 again actuates the lever 30 and the same cycle of movement is performed a second time.
However, in order to prevent the cam 31 from being able to actuate the lever 30 at the instant of the opening of the latch 107, 106, which would prevent the removal of the pad, a servicing device is provided. This device prohibits the actuation of the lever 30 by the. cam 31 as long as the latch 83-84 is in the position shown in the drawing, that is to say in the closed position.
This device consists of a latch 83-84 held in the closed position (position shown) by a spring, not shown. One 83 of the parts of this lock, carried by a lever 88 and pivoted at 85, is actuated against the action of the return spring, at the end of the return stroke of the longitudinal slide. To this end, the pusher 19 carries a drive finger 86 intended to cooperate with a lug 87 integral with the lever 88.
The second part 84 of the lock is constituted by a solid arm of a sleeve 90 mounted loose on the shaft 29. This sleeve carries a second arm 91 carrying a lug 92 intended to cooperate with a ramp 93 integral with the cam 31 The latter cooperating with the lever 30 causes the resetting of the lock 83-84. This cam 31 slides on the axis 32 and a spring 89 tends to keep it out of reach of the lever 30, so that it cannot cause the latter to oscillate as long as the bolt 106-107 is in the lock. position re presented.
When the latch 83-84 is open, the arm 91 oscillates and the lug 92 cooperating with the ramp 92 moves the rod 81, against the action of its spring 89, by an amount sufficient for it to cooperate. with lever 30.
Thus, it is only when the longitudinal slide is in the machining start position that the cam 31 can cause: 10 the engagement of the pad with the lead screw; The re-arming of the relay constituted by the spring 100; The depth advance of the tool, by actuation of the ratchet wheel 53; 40 the working position of the tool by actuating the slide 41. Thus, operating safety is complete and no control error can occur, whatever the speed of rotation of the spindle.
During each working stroke, the tool cuts the thread in part 4 always deeper. Finally, during the last depth advance controlled by the universal cam 51, the rack 71 actuated by the shaft 52 acts, through the intermediary of the chain of transmission members, on the lever 47, and causes a sufficient displacement of the latter to carry it out of engagement with the nose 45.
After the execution of the last working stroke, when the slide 7 moves back to its starting position, the ramp 69 actuates the push button 67 which causes the release of the lever 46 from the arm 45, as described. upper. Now, the lever 47 is now also out of reach of the nose 45, the transverse slide 6 is fully released and returns, under the action of its spring 43, to the rest position defined by the stop 44.
During this movement, the ramp 76 actuates the finger 77 which causes the release of the retaining pawl 63. The latter causes the advance pawl 55 in its displacement through the intermediary of a nose 99. The wheel ratchet 53 is then fully released and returns, under the action of spring 72, to its rest position defined by stop 74.
The retreat of the smooth neck 6 further causes the actuation of the pusher 82 against the action of the spring 109, so as to maintain the two parts of the red worm 106-107 in the released position.
From the foregoing, it can be seen that the longitudinal slide must obligatorily perform the same movements as the lead screw, which ensures the precision of the thread pitch on part 4, the clearances being easily reduced to a minimum. minimum and, on the other hand, the thrusts always acting in the same direction, these clearances are practically eliminated. In addition,
the release of the comb is controlled by a snap-action relay activated by the displacements. of the longitudinal slide, so that this release is always controlled with precision at the desired instants, on the one hand, and is carried out, on the other hand, by a sudden and rapid movement of the comb 25 under the action of the relay, which as far as possible avoids wear of the pad and local wear of the lead screw.
Finally, thanks to the fact that the tool-holder carriage comprises a transverse lower slide carrying an upper longitudinal slide, this lathe has various other important technical advantages.
First, the .length of the smooth neck intended to receive the tool holders is no longer limited by the dimensions of the lathe, that is to say by the distance separating the spindle from the tailstock. It is therefore possible to fix a number of tool holders corresponding to the number of threads having the same pitch that the part to be machined has.
In addition, the entire device for controlling the movements of the cross slides of the tool carriage can be fixed to the frame of the lathe, so that the carriage is lightened by all the weight thereof. This results in greater stability of this moving part and therefore greater machining precision. The inertia of the moving parts being less, the wear of the lathe is reduced accordingly.
The upper slide effecting a longitudinal displacement, the construction of the tool holder is simplified, since the dimensions of the latter must be provided only to allow the attachment of the tool holder and no longer to receive it. transverse slide as in the known towers. In a construction as described, the tools are therefore much more stable, the guiding of the parts which carry them can be dimensioned so as to avoid any excessive wear.
Another advantage of the lathe described lies in the fact that the depth advancement cam 51 can be constituted by a universal cam, which avoids the making of a special cam for each part to be threaded. These cams are, in fact, very expensive, the machining of their ramp having to be very precise. And meet very strict conditions.
Thanks to the stop 74 with adjustable position making it possible to fix the rest position of the rack and therefore the starting angular position of the cam 51, on the one hand, and to the adjusting screw 75 making it possible to fix the position of the rack 71 -and therefore to fix the position @of the cam 51 for which the latch 41-45 is released with a view to releasing the rack 38 and returning to the rest position of the transverse slide 7, on the other hand go,
it is possible to choose the sector of the profile of the cam 51 to be used in each specific case so as to obtain the desired decreasing advance of the tools.
Finally, the transverse slide returning to the rest position on its stop 44, - automatically causes the return to the starting position of the cam 51 by simultaneous release of the pawls 63 and 55 from the ratchet wheel; release caused by the ramp 76 acting on the finger 77.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 2, the threading lathe has a device-for controlling the movements of the smooth necks of the tool-holder carriage which corresponds at all points to that described with reference to FIG. 1, except for the automatic shut-off device.
In. this fig. 2, the or ganes corresponding to those of FIG. 1 are designated by the same reference numbers. The return of the longitudinal slide after each working stroke is controlled in exactly the same way as in the embodiment according to fig. 1;
the same is true of the advance in depth of the transverse slide after each pass. Note, however, that the nose 45 cooperates with the single lever 47. The release ment of this lever from the nose 45, instead of being carried out gradually under the action of successive movements of the rack 71, is caused by energizing an electromagnetic relay 115.
The supply circuit of the winding 116 of this relay is controlled by a sudden closing switch 117 whose closing is caused by the movements of the mesh 71. Thus, in this second form of 'execution, the closing of the switch 117 and therefore the release of the lever 47 from the stop 45 is caused by an additional advance of the rack 71 controlled by the return of the longitudinal slide to its rest position after the execution of the last pass.
This second embodiment has certain advantages over that of the fie. 1. In fact, during the last passes the advance of the tool in depth must be very low and even zero if one wishes to obtain a clean thread. It follows that the movements of the rack are small, and in the case of the fie. 1, the lever 47 is not. engaged under the nose 45 only very weakly. The nose and the end of the lever 47 deform rapidly, so that it is necessary to provide a ramp on the end of the lever 46 to allow its engagement.
It is clear that such a ramp makes any precision illusory.
As we can see, in the execution according to the fie. 2, the lever 47 always remains fully engaged with the nose 45, the relay causing its sudden release after the last pass, during the last return of the longitudinal slide to the rest position.
It can be seen that even when the last part of the profile of the cam 51 is circular, so as to obtain the desired precision and cleanliness of the thread, the displacement of the rack being independent of the profile of the cam 51, the abrupt closing of the The switch 117 and therefore the energization of the relay 115 are always ensured with precision.
It is obvious that the relay 115 could be constituted in an alternative embodiment by any other snap-action relay, such as a spring held in the loaded position by a lock, pneumatic or hydraulic relay.
Two embodiments of the automatic threading lathe have been described here by way of example and with reference to the appended schematic drawing, but it is obvious that all of the organs and devices described can be replaced by their equivalents. Thus, the relay 100 could consist of an electromagnet energized by a contact actuated by the longitudinal slide, for example.
Likewise, the device for controlling the engagement of the pad could be constituted by an electromagnet energized by a contact actuated by the movements of the longitudinal slide.
The pad could also be mounted on a shaft and perform an oscillating movement in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the spindle.
Finally, the lead screw could, as in the known lathes, be mounted on a rotary axis and the pad be mounted on an oscillating and sliding sleeve.
