Counter-pedal braking mechanism fitted with an anti-theft device for cycles. The present invention relates to a back-pedaling braking mechanism provided with an anti-theft device for cycles.
This mechanism is characterized in that it comprises a member rotatably mounted in the pedal box and on which are fixed the control cables of the front and rear brakes, means. to drive this member from the crankshaft only during counter-pedaling, and in that the anti-theft device comprises-blocking means acting at-least on the aforesaid member.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the mechanism according to the invention, applied to a bicycles.
Fig. 1 is a cross section of the bottom bracket shell.
Fig. 2 is a section along the axis of the crankset.
Fig. 3 shows in section, on another scale, the front part of the frame with the steering tube. Fig. 4 shows ,. in section, the rear part of the frame.
Fig. 5 is a detail view.
In fig. 1 and 2, 1 designates the crankshaft on which the: cranks 2 and 3 and the chain wheel 4 are mounted, and with which the ratchet teeth 5 have been manufactured. Two pawls 7 and 8, subjected to the action of springs 9 and 10, are arranged in corresponding notches of a sleeve 6 and cooperate with the 8th teeth 5.
This sleeve 6 is mounted concentrically to the crankshaft so as to be able to rotate freely about its axis in the crank box 33 and cables 11 and 12 - for controlling the rear brakes, respectively before, are hooked. in two holes. drilled in the sleeve 6.
The cable 11 exits to the outside through a hole drilled in the tube 14 of the frame, very close to the bottom bracket, and goes to the rear brake, the length of cable between the mechanism and the brake being very short. The cable 12 passes through part of the tube 13 of the frame, exits to the outside through a hole drilled in this tube and is connected to the front brake.
As shown in the drawing, the latching 5, 6, 7 allows the rotation of the cranks 2 and 3 in the direction of advance of the. bicycle, this mechanism then functioning in free wheel. When the cranks are driven in the opposite direction during the counter-pedal, the sleeve 6 is locked on the shaft 1 by the pawls 7 and 8 and is driven in rotation, which has the effect of tensioning the cables 11 and 12 and of apply the brakes. When you pedal forward again, the sleeve 6 is released and opens the brakes.
Shaft 1, with the exception of its ceri- tra.le part, is hollow, as shown in dotted lines ii la. fi-. 2, and comprises a collar 25 and a sliding sleeve 26 both forming the raceways for the balls on which the sleeve 6 is mounted. The gearbox 33 is closed on the side of the chain wheel by a threaded plug 28 ', and at the other end by a threaded plug 27 and a clamping ring 28. Ball bearings are also provided for shaft 1.
To limit the rotation of the sleeve 6 when opening the brakes, this sleeve is provided with a tooth 26, cooperating with a stop screw 26 'screwed into the. box 33.
The crank 3 wedged on the shaft 1 is coupled with the chain wheel by means of a coupling allowing a small empty stroke of the. crank. As shown by fib. 2 and 5, this coupling comprises a part 32 integral with the. crank and having a flange 29 in which peripheral notches 29 'are formed, this flange being disposed between the chain wheel 4 and a cover 30. The cover 30 is fixed to the wheel 4 by means of screws 31, which pass through the peripheral notches 29 'of the flange 29.
Thanks to this coupling, after braking, the crank, before setting in motion. the chain wheel performs an empty stroke the amplitude of which depends on the width of the notches 29 'in which the screws 31 move, this empty stroke allowing. the opening. of the brakes. The chain wheel 4 and the crank 3 can still be connected together by a series of springs (not shown) arranged for example in a housing, and which tend to bring the crank back until it stops. it stops against screws 31.
The anti-theft device with which the braking mechanism is fitted. counter-pedaling described, comprises a balance 17, 18 pivoted at 19 and whose arm 17 constitutes a pawl intended to engage between teeth 6 'housed on a part of the periphery of the sleeve 6. At both ends of the balance 17, 18 are fixed two cables 16 and 20.
The cable 1.6 passes through the tube 1.4 of the frame and is connected to a lock 15, arranged below the saddle; the cable 20 passes through the tube 13 of the frame and is connected to a lock 22, movable in a guide 22 ', this lock being subjected to the action of a compression spring 21. The steering tube 23 has a hole 24 Arranged so that by rotating the steering until the front wheel is about 90 to the frame, the hole 24 comes in front of the lock 22 of the block cage.
The anti-theft device described operates from the. as follows: In the inoperative position of this device, the lock 15 keeps the cable 16 taut, the pawl of the arm 17 being lifted relative to the teeth 6 '. The cable 21) is also stretched, so that, even if, during an exceptional steering, the hole 24 were brought in front of the latch 22 retained by the cable 2 (), the latch 22 could not engage in hole 24. To lock the bicycle, it is closed with a special key. lock 15.
The cable 16 then relaxes and the pawl of the arm 17 of the balance engages between two of the teeth 6 'of the sleeve 6 which, thanks to the shape of these teeth, can rotate in the braking direction, but is blocked in the direction opposite. The crank is then rotated back to apply the brakes which are thus locked and the steering is rotated to bring the front wheel almost at right angles to the frame. At the moment when the hole 24, drilled in the steering tube 23, is in front of the lock 22, the latter, thanks to the relaxation of the cable and the action of the spring 21, enters the hole 24, as indicated. dotted on the wire-. 3.
The brakes and steering are thus locked and the bicycle is rendered unusable.
It is understood that certain details of the mechanism described could be modified, for example, one could provide a single pawl instead of -two pawls 7 and 8; the ba lancer 17, 18 could be arranged in any other way, for -example on a ring inserted into the tube 13 and provided with a cross. On the other hand, the lock 15 can be of any type and the mechanism described can be applied to any type of brake.
Instead of being snap-in, the freewheel mechanism could be of the expansion type, the characteristic noise of the snap-fit, when it runs idle, can thus be avoided.
