Clothes line. The object of the present invention is. a clothes line comprising a cord made up of at least two strands twisted one above the other and under tension.
Clotheslines are already known made of two or more strands of metal wire or of rope, twisted one over the other and held together under tension. These clotheslines have the advantage that one can. fix objects between the twisted strands without using pliers. laundry or other fixing devices. However, several drawbacks have limited its use on a large scale. For example, it should be possible to separate or spread the strands a small distance in the vicinity of a spacer device in order to be able to fix the objects on the rope or remove them.
The spacer device is subject to all weather conditions and must be designed so as not to present sources of mechanical failure for long periods. In addition, when an endless clothesline with twisted strands is mounted on and between two rotating pulleys, it is to be feared that the wind will strike the objects suspended from the horn by moving it, so that the strands move apart as they pass through the spacing device. and. let the ob jets come off. rope. Consequently, it is necessary to provide a braking device which, when the rope is loaded, prevents it from moving.
The clothes rack forming the object of the invention is characterized by a device for separating the strands, comprising a hollow cylindrical housing with open ends, in which a body is mounted so as to be able to turn freely, further characterized by by at least one journaling shaft in this body which it crosses and carrying at least one grooved pulley.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a clothesline comprising, an endless rope, made of two browns twisted onto each other of wire or rope under. tension and rise between two pulleys over which it passes.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a device used to separate or separate the strands of the rope.
Fig. 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of a variant of the device of FIG. 2.
Fig. â is a sectional view of a second variant of the device, mounted in a housing. Fig. 6 is an elevation view of a third variant, and FIG. 7 is a perspective view of a pulley with a braking device usable with an endless clothesline.
The clothesline of fig, 1 comprises a rope composed of their strands 10 and 10a, of metal wire or of rope, twisted one on the other, according to a relatively long pitch. This rope is of the endless type and passes over two pulleys 11 and 12 rotating. in frames 13, normally carried by posts or other support members.
The device for separating the strands, shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 comprises an open hollow cylindrical housing 15. at the ends and a hollow cylindrical body 16 carried by the housing and in which it rotates. A n shaft 17, passing through the body 16 in which it is journaled, carries grooved pulleys 18 and 18a .. The housing 15 is threaded, 2-0, so as to receive the arms 21 forming a yoke by means of which it is can fix the device on one or the other of the frames 13, as can be seen in FIG. 1.
An internal peripheral groove 22, formed in the internal wall of the front end. of the housing, is used to receive a ball bearing 23.
The rear end of the. body 16 journals in the front end of the housing. The rear end of the body has a shoulder. interior 2-1 in which is formed an outer peripheral groove 25 cooperating with the groove 22 of the housing to constitute the raceway of the ball bearing. The shaft 17, journaling: in the opposite sides of the front end ten bodies 16, is perpendicular to the major axis of the body.
The ends of the shaft 17 journal in small openings in alignment, formed in the internal wall of the body. A sleeve 17a. is mounted on the shaft.
The grooved pulleys 18 and 18a rotate on the sleeve 17a. These pulleys have grooves 19 over which the separate strands of the clothesline can pass, one strand not sant on each pulley. Ball bearings 26 are housed in a groove formed on the opposite faces of the bore of the pulley and. of the sleeve 17u, so as to allow the pulleys to rotate without friction on the shaft or the sleeve.
On the front end of the body 16 is mounted a closure cover 30 comprising, in alignment with the pulleys 18 and 18a, openings 31 through which the separated strands arrive at the pulleys 18 and 18a. A cover 32 is mounted in the rear end of the body 16. This cover also has openings for the separate strands of the rope. I l is. provided with a threaded rod 33 directed towards the rear. A felt washer 35 is inserted over the shank 33 to fit tightly, on the rear end of the body, against the cover 32.
This washer is also pierced with openers which are brought into alignment with the openings of the cover 32. This felt washer is held in place by a nut. 3.1 are screwed onto the rod 33. The covers 30 and 32 prevent dust and. moisture from entering the body 16. The 3'5 felt washer is used to clean the strands of the rope as they pass through it.
In the variant shown in FIG. 4, the rotating body is a disc 40, of which. some parts of the periphery are cut to allow the placement of four rollers 44 mounted on shafts 45 journaling. in the body of the disc. Parts of this disc body 40 are cut to allow placement of four grooved pulleys 42 mounted on shafts 43 passing through the disc body. The disc 40 is made of metal or some other material having. strength and rigidity sufficient to withstand the forces to which it is subjected.
In the variant shown in FIG. 5, the disc 40 is mounted in a housing 41. The diameter of this disc is a little smaller than the internal diameter of the housing 41 in which it is mounted and it has a sufficient thickness to be able to mount it. the different parts that it supports. Two grooved pulleys 42 for supporting the strands rotate., In the body of the disc, on shafts 43, the body presenting. cutouts intended for. the introduction of the shafts and the assembly of the pulleys. These are, in general, relatively small.
The pulleys with grooves 42 are. mounted so as to prevent twisting or wedging under the action of the forces exerted obliquely by the separate strands of the. Clothesline. The disc is mounted in the housing on rollers 44a mounted on shafts. These gaets can be small wheels or ball bearings rotating on journal shafts 47a. in the disk. These rollers are placed outside the disc 40 and in the vicinity of the periphery of the housing.
The disc 40 therefore serves as a mount for grooved pulleys 42, that is to say a grooved pulley for each end of the multi-strand clothesline. Fig. 4 shows a variant comprising four grooved pulleys for the ends of a four-strand rope, while FIG. 5 shows a variant a>, ant two grooved pulleys for the strands of a two-strand rope.
In the variant of FIG. 6, the rotating body is a disc of generally circular shape '50, parts of the periphery of which are cut to allow the placement of rollers 5,1 which are mounted on shafts 52 journaling in the body of the disc. Parts of the disc body are cut away to accommodate grooved pulleys 53 and 53a, placed one above the other and mounted on shafts 54 and 54a crossing the disc body.
Fig. 7 shows a braking device. A pulley 60 of a conventional type has a hub 61, fit spokes, a groove 63 and a pin 64 passing through the hub and pivoting on its ends, in the front ends of arm 65 forming a yoke 66. The end rear of the latter comprises a ring 67 in which is engaged a hook 63 itself fixed to an anchoring device such as a post 69.
The frame of the braking device comprises elements 70 mounted on the axis 64 and placed astride, in the form of a U, on the circumference of the pulley, at diametrically points. opposites. One side of the hub 61 carries teeth 71, of the gear type, re parts around the periphery of the hub and placed at the height of the spokes 62, between the latter and the inner face of the elements 70.
A pawl 72 pivots, at one end, on the interior face of the elements and is of sufficient length for its free end to engage the teeth 71. In one of its positions, the pawl 72 is held in alignment. of the element 70 by a lock 73-. In this position, it is away from the teeth 71 and the pulley can turn freely in either direction.
In the other position, the locked position, it passes over the teeth in the direction of rotation and engages them in the other direction to prevent the rope from moving. The pawl 72 can be conveniently actuated by means of a button 74 mounted outside the member 70.
