Vehicle operated by pedals. The present invention relates to a vehicle actuated by pedals, such as a bicycle because, for example, which differs from known vehicles in that the change in the direction of travel of the vehicle is caused by the angular displacements of the vehicle. a frame which carries a front drive wheel, its actuating pedals, a seat for the driver, as well as a steering control member; this frame being itself pivoted on an axis integral with the chassis of the vehicle and arranged in a vertical plane perpendicular to the rolling axis of the driving wheel, the direction of the axis of the frame passing outside the axis of wheel bearing.
The drawings show, by way of example, some embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a partial elevational view of a bicycle according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of FIG. 1. Fig. 3- represents a detail of the steering control mechanism.
Fig. 4 shows, in elevation, a véllocar to which a construction variant of the steering control mechanism has been applied (FIG. 1).
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the steering control mechanism, shown separately.
Fig. 6, shows, in elevation, the front part of a bicycle comprising a variant embodiment of the. direction (fig. 1).
Fig. 7 is a plan view of FIG. 6.
In the bicycle shown in fig. 1 and 2, the frame 1 to receive the seat box 20 rests on the two rear wheels 2 and 2 '. It extends forward and ends with the main upright S, with end journals 4 and 5 located on the same line of substantially vertical axis X-X.
These journals 4 and 5 rotate in bearings 6 and 7 carried by the frame or front end casing 8 which carries the front wheel 9, the actuating pedals, the driver's seat 15 as well as the steering wheel 10. direction control, so that this frame 8 can undergo angular displacements around this axis X -X, which is disposed in a vertical plane perpendicular to the axis of the wheel 9, the direction of this axis XX passing in outside the axis of this wheel 9. The frame 1 and the main upright 3 are linked to form a rigid assembly by means of the two tie rods. 19.
The steering is controlled by actuating a member .de manceuvre 10 (fig. 1 and 3), which carries, wedged on a tube 10 ', a small pinion I1 which meshes with a larger pinion 12, which is wedged on the main upright 3 via the upper pin 5.
The connection between the steering tube 10 'and the upper journal 5 of the main upright 3 could also be ensured by any other rigid connection system with associated reverse movements. However, the pair of gears 1'1-12 has the advantage of providing a geared steering, in a smaller space.
The operation of this device is as follows: A rotation of the actuator 10 in a direction fi corresponds to a stress in the opposite direction f .; on the journal 5 of the main upright 3 of the chassis 1. However, the chassis 1 cannot slide to the side, forms, on the contrary, a fixed reaction fulcrum and it is the entire front axle, carried by the housing 8, which will describe either in the direction of arrow f ,, or in the direction of arrow f., an arc of a circle having its center on the journal axis 5.
It follows that, in a bend, the actuator 10 and the upright 3, linked together, impart to the driving wheel 9 an angular displacement, around the journal 5, which displacement is a function of that imparted to the device. of maneuver 10 - of the direction.
The stability of the device is evidenced in fig. 2 which shows, by way of example, the vehicle in the right-turn position. Note that the driver's seat 15 is located inside the support triangle, the vertices of which are respectively 16, 17 and 18 which are the points of contact of the three wheels 9, 2 and? ' with the ground.
In the vélocar that represents the fi. 4, the, rear part 1 of the frame resting on the rear -wheels 2, ends at the front by an amount. 3 with end journals 4 and 5 around which pivot bearings 6 and 7 carried by the subframe or secondary frame 8 of the front end, which also carries the seat 15, the aetration pedals, the control gui 10 steering wheel and rests on the front wheel 9.
On the steering tube l0 'carrying the maneuvering organ 10 is wedged a crank 2 2 linked, by a connecting rod 21, to a second m level 2'3 wedged on the journal to. My levels 2'2 and 23 are reversed in rotation. The operation is identical to. that described above, the frame 8 also undergoing angular displacements around the axis of the journals 4, 5, this axis being arranged in a vertical plane perpendicular to. the axis of the driving wheel 9, the direction of this axis passing outside this wheel 9.
In the bike that represent. figs. 6 and 7, the rear end 1 ends with a socket 3 'in which the saddle tube 15' is directly engaged 15. This tube 15 'is integral with the frame or secondary frame 8 of the front end, carrying the . front drive wheel 9, the actuating pedals, the driver's seat 15 and the steering wheel 10 for steering control. The steering tube 11 'for the handwheel 10 rotates on a central axis 24, located at the front of the frame 8.
The connection between the tube 10 ′ and the rear end bush 3 ′ is made by a set of reversing gears 11 ′ and 12 ′ and by a direct, non-inverted connection, constituted by side links 21 ′.
In the embodiment of fi- ,. 6 and 7, the gear 11 'is constituted by a pinion, wedged on the tube (the direction 10', while the gear 12 'is formed by a toothed sector carrying the pins 25 on which are attached the rods 21' which, preferably adjustable in length, are coupled, by their other ends, to pins 26 carried by a plate 27 forming the lateral extension of the rear end socket 3 '.
A rotation of the flywheel 10 in the direction f, corresponds to a stress in the direction f 2 on the sector 12 'and, by the play of the connecting rods? L', a stress in direction f1. on the 3 'rear end socket. But the latter then constituting a fulcrum, it is the frame or secondary frame .d'front end 8 which, finally, describes, in the direction f3, an arc of a circle having its center on the axis of the sleeve 3 '.
In other words, the frame 8 will undergo angular displacements around the axis of the sleeve 3; this axis, which is arranged in a vertical plane perpendicular to the axis of the driving wheel 9, being inclined so as to pass outside the axis of said wheel 9.
