Process for the production of a condensation product. The present patent is a process for the preparation of a new condensation product by. Reaction of cyeloheganone with crotonaldehyde in the presence of an alkaline condensation agent, which is characterized in that the aldehyde is allowed to act on an excess of cycloheganone at low temperature to initiate the reaction.
After adjustment to pHS-7, the reaction mixture can then be heated to a higher temperature for some time, if necessary in vacuo or under pressure, where volatile components are removed. After neutralization, the condensation agent can also be removed by separating off the aqueous layer and then heating.
An aqueous or alcoholic solution of alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxides can be used as the condensing agent. carbonates or amine bases can be used. The product obtained, which is always a mixture composed of the same compounds, is a clear, linseed oil-like, air-drying oil with a weak odor, the color and viscosity of which vary depending on the conditions used in its manufacture.
Example: 980 parts by weight of cycloheganone are heated to 30 to 70 parts by weight of 7 to 15% sodium hydroxide solution and 700 parts by weight of crotonaldehyde are added to this mixture in the course of a few hours. The reaction mixture is adjusted to pHS-7, for example with sulfuric acid, and the crude oil layer which is deposited is optionally separated from the aqueous layer.
The volatile components are removed from the crude oil by heating to 100 to 300 in vacuo, whereupon the condensation product obtained is further heated, if necessary at increased pressure, until the desired viscosity level is reached.
