Process for the production of a carbon dioxide product. The subject of the present patent is a process for the preparation of a new condensation product by reacting acetone with acetaldehyde and crotonaldehyde in the presence of an alkaline condensation agent, characterized in that the aldehydes are allowed to act on an excess of acetone to initiate the reaction.
The product obtained, which is always a mixture composed of the same compounds, is a clear, linseed oil, air-drying oil, the color and viscosity of which vary depending on the working conditions used in its manufacture.
After the reaction has ended, the reaction mixture can be washed out with water, volatile constituents can be distilled off and the alkaline condensing agent can be removed by stripping off the aqueous solution. Washing and distillation can also be carried out in reverse order. The reaction product formed can also be removed from the reaction mixture using suitable solvents.
Since the action of oxygen during the reaction influences the color of the oils obtained, it is advisable to work with letter oxygen closure to achieve a light product.
The viscosity of the product can be regulated within wide limits by conducting the reaction; for example, by maintaining a certain reaction temperature and also by varying the amount of reactants, practically any degree of viscosity can be obtained. The yields vary depending on the reaction conditions, but the qualitative composition of the condensation product always remains the same.
The initiation of the reaction of the aldehydes with acetone can be achieved by adding dropwise the former to the mixture of the latter with the condensing agent at a higher or lower temperature. In the latter case, subsequent heating is required to carry out the reaction.
Examples:. 735 parts by volume of acetone are heated with 300 parts by volume of 5% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution; 650 parts by volume of a mixture of 400 parts by volume of acetaldehyde and 250 parts by volume of crotonaldehyde are then added over the course of a few hours. After the aqueous layer has been separated off and neutralized, the volatile constituents are removed from the crude oil - finally in a vacuum.
2. 735 parts by volume of acetone are mixed with 250 parts by volume of 2N sodium hydroxide solution and heated to the boil. -With stirring, a mixture of 285 parts by volume of acetaldehyde and 420 parts by volume of crotonaldehyde is added dropwise. The excess caustic soda is separated from the separated crude oil and the latter is washed with water. After the volatile constituents have been distilled off, a clear, pale oil with good drying properties remains.
3. A mixture of 170 parts by volume of acetaldehyde and 580 parts by volume of crotonaldehyde is allowed to flow into a mixture of 735 parts by volume of acetone and 300 parts by volume of 8% strength aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The reaction product is etherified and, after evaporation of the solvent, volatile components are removed in vacuo.
