lllachine to bind. The present invention relates to a binding machine, comprising a mechanism for binding one with the other two previously juxtaposed parts of a link, and a gripping device mounted so as to be able to rotate about an axis. , intended to retain one of the ends of the link., and normally occupying at rest a position such that we can then introduce axially the end of the link: in this device in a direction inclined relative to that in which the 'longitudinal axis of the link:
is placed when it is in a suitable position for the binding operation, the gripping device being able to rotate by a sufficient angle so that when it is brought into the working position while retaining the end of the tie, the latter is not bent between this device and the mechanism performing the binding operation.
This binding machine is characterized by a spring acting on the gripping device and the sole function of which is to return this device to its normal rest position, this spring being soft enough so that the gripping device can easily pivot on its axis to be placed in the correct position for the binding operation when, the end of the link being introduced into this device, manual traction is exerted on this link in order to engage it with the mechanism performing the binding operation.
The machine according to the invention can very well be used with round metal wire or flat tape, but it is more particularly convenient to use in the case of wire of oval or flattened section, which is preferably very hard (weak tensile elongation) and which is not easily bent in the plane of its largest transverse axis (rather, it tends to twist when bending in the plane where the bending resistance is lowest).
In fact, in the machine according to the invention, the end of the link having <B>. </B> been introduced into the gripping device, this link can easily be brought into engagement by hand with the mechanism performing the operation. binding operation without it being necessary.; area to bend this tie.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine according to the invention.
The fi-. 1 is a front view of this machine; fig. 2 is a plan view; the fi-. 3 shows a detail in elevation with partial section along the line III-III of FIG. 2; the fi.g. 4 is a section taken along line IV-IV of the fia. 2, and fig. 5 is a section along the line V-V of the fia ,. 4; the fi-. 6 is a fragmentary side view of the grooved pinion used to twist the two juxtaposed parts of the wire and its control.
The machine shown has a pin with a groove of known construction, 1, for twisting the juxtaposed parts of the wire, a gripping device 2 for the free end of the wire, arranged on one side of the pinion (on the left in the Fig. 1), and a tensioning device .disposi tif on the other side of this pin gnon, a cleaver 3 being arranged between the pinion and the tensioning device.
The: fig. 6 shows the grooved pinion 1 with the two juxtaposed parts of the wire in position, this pinion being controlled by the toothed wheel 10'l mounted on a shaft 10l3 carrying a control handle 10W. This handle 103 drives the toothed wheel <B> 101 </B> by means of a pawl so that each complete stroke of this handle corresponds to three complete turns of the pinion 1, which is normal in these machines .
The gripping device 2, for gripping the free end of the wire, comprises a pivoting gripping or gane, having the form of a wheel 4, mounted eccentrically, having teeth at its periphery and subjected to the action of 'a spring so that it tends to pivot in the direction bringing it closer to an anvil 5.
The anvil 5 comes in one piece with a member 6 which is arranged so as to be able to pivot under the action of a spring at a certain angle about a vertical axis away from the pinion. The wheel 4 is mounted on the member 6 so that when the gripping device 2 is in the normal rest position indicated in FIG. 1 and in solid lines in FIG. 2, the end of the wire can be introduced axially between the wheel 4 and the anvil 5 from the front of the machine at an inclination of about 45 with respect to the axis of the pinion.
Fig. 3 shows the construction of the positive gripping device 2 in detail. As shown in this figure, the member 6 is pivoted on a bolt 7 and is biased towards its normal rest position by a spring 8 housed in an annular cavity 9 made in the or gane 6 and whose opposite ends are anchored respectively in holes in the channel 6 and in the base of the machine. The spring 8 is very weak and its only function is to return the gripping device 2 to its normal rest position.
The driving spring. the wheel 4 in the engaged position is shown at 10 with one of its ends fixed to the member 6 and the other fixed to an arm 1'1, directed towards the rear of a plate 12, which is attached to the front face of the wheel 4.
The plate 12 also has an operating or gane 13 and a smaller appendage 14 directed forward; it is between this appendage 14 and the anvil 5 which is passed the wire after having driven the package and before introducing it a second time into the groove of the twisting pinion.
The tensioning device comprises a neck full of gripping devices, one of which can slide away from the twisting pinion in the longitudinal direction of the wire to tension the latter, and the other of which is fixed and can grip the wire. to maintain voltage during the return flow of the mobile device. The movable gripping device com takes a movable member 15 sliding in a groove 16, the axis of which is slightly inclined upwards with respect to the axis of the twisting pin; a handle 17 moves the organ 1-5 against the action of a spring 18 tending to push this member towards the fixed gripping device.
The movable member 1,5 has upper and lower interior surfaces converging towards the end of the member adjacent to the fixed gripping device. Upper and lower jaws 19 and 20, having correspondingly inclined upper and lower surfaces, are arranged so as to slide: in contact with the internal surfaces of the member 15 and on each one supports a spring which urges it towards the device fixed grip; thus the jaws tend to close one on the other by sliding on said inclined surfaces. The edges of the jaws are provided with saw teeth.
The jaws are slightly bevelled so that a wire can easily be inserted between them if it is introduced transversely to the axis of the pinion tone deur through a slot 21 made on the front of the member 15 A cam 22 integral with a fixing plate 212a serves to facilitate the introduction of the wire between the jaws. Cam 22 is located behind the entry occupied by the wire. It is intended to engage between the jaws and to separate them from one another when the member 15 reaches the end of its stroke towards the fixed gripping device.
The purpose of this cam is to slide the jaws relative to the inclined internal surfaces of the member 15 against the action of their respective springs by a sufficient space to spread them apart just enough so that the larger gauge of the wire to be used can be introduced between them. Preferably, the edges of the jaws facing the fixed gripping device are bevelled so as to facilitate the engagement of the cam between these jaws.
The fixed gripping device comprises a fixed member 23 similar to the member 15 of the movable gripping device and having upper and lower internal surfaces 24 and 25 converging towards the twisting gear; upper and lower jaws 26 and 27 with edges provided with saw teeth, and between which the wire is engaged transversely with respect to the axis of the tor deur pinion thanks to a slot 28 made on the front of the member 23, are arranged to slide against converging interior surfaces of the member 2 <B>, 3 </B> as in the case of the mobile gripping device.
On these jaws support springs 29 and 30, so that they tend. To approach one another.
The ends of the jaws facing the twisting gear are inclined in plan as shown in the. fig. 5. The springs 29 and 3-0 normally push the jaws against the inclined surface of a plunger 31 mounted in a housing 32 formed in the bottom wall of the space where the jaws move. This plunger is spring-loaded so as to be pushed back normally towards the front of the machine to be placed on the path of the jaws.
The arrangement is such that the jaws are normally held by the plunger in such positions relative to surfaces 24 and 2) that their engaging surfaces are spaced apart by a space greater than the maximum wire gauge.
To use the machine, the operator inserts the end of a wire unwinding from a spool axially into the gripping device 2, by rotating the wheel 4 until: this end of the wire is stopped by a stop 46, part by the member 6 of: device '2.
The end of the wire is then gripped by the positive gripping device 2, any tendency for the wire to exit forcing the wheel 4 to pivot in order to grip it more closely; the operator places the next part of the wire in the groove 48 of the sprocket wheel and passes the wire through. through a guide slot 47. The spring 8-is suf ficiently soft so that, during this positioning: of the wire, the weak traction exerted on it during this op6ratig4 is sufficient for lice to pivot the gripping device 2 and the 'bring them to their working position.
When this gripping device 2 is in the working position (dotted in Fig. 2), the gripped wire comes in line with the groove 48 of the pinion and passes from this gripping device 2 to the pinion h without being bent. The arrangement is such that, when the gripping device is in this position, the outer face, that is to say the front, of the wheel 4 is situated substantially in a vertical plane passing through the axis of the pinion; from which it follows that a properly gripped wire is correctly placed in the groove of the idler gear, that is to say immediately behind the pinion axis.
In addition, the free end of the part of the wire which is gripped takes the correct position to determine the end of the link, that is to say it is placed as to the left of the pinion as the guide slot 47 which determines the other end of the link is to its right. The pivoting arrangement on the vertical axis of the gripping device 2 not only facilitates the introduction of the wire, but also allows the wire to be introduced, without damaging it, axially in this gripping device.
After having been inserted into the guide slot 47, the wire is passed under the members 15 and 23 of the tensioning device, around the package and between the anvil 5 and the appendix 14 of the plate 121 which form a guide slot , to be introduced a second time into the groove of the knotter pinion and into the guide slot 47.
The part of the wire going from the slot 47 to the spool is then introduced transversely to the axis of the pinion through the slots 28 and 21 of the members 23: and 15; the pressure exerted by the wire on the plunger 31 pushes the latter and moves it away from the path of the jaws <B> 26 </B> and 2: 7 which can therefore slide along the inclined surfaces under the action of their springs to grip the yarn strongly and prevent backward movement of the yarn during the return stroke of the movable gripper of the tensioning device.
The first part of the wire being already in place between the member 4 and the anvil 5 before the operator inserts the second part under the appendage 14, the latter is held at a suitable height above the anvil 5 for allow to introduce this second part in the. simply pushing across to. its longitudinal axis.
The cleaver 3 comprises a blade arranged transversely to that of the two parts of the thread which pass. in the slot 47, which is on the outside. This blade is screwed to a sliding support a which, under the action of a spring, occupies the upper position of the fi-. 1. During the last part of the twisting movement, a stopper b (fig. 1 and 2) rotating with the handle 103 actuates the head of the support a and the blade cuts the part of the outer thread since this blade is beyond the pinion axis.
As the appliance can move by sliding lightly on the surface of the box or bundle to be tied, a thread guide hook 33, which prevents the position of the machine from being changed in relation to the thread, is mounted between the fixed and mobile gripping devices for the tensioning device; this thread guide has an inclined surface on which the thread acts when pushed aside to introduce it into the slots 21 and 28; it is thus obliged to pivot around the horizontal screw 33, a to. against the action of a spring indicated in dotted lines at 34 in fig. _) to allow the thread to pass behind its. hooked part.
When the thread is sufficient. tensioned, the handle 103 is turned 180 so that the pinion 1 does exactly. three full turns, which allows it to reverse the value of the excess twist. During the last part of the race. handle, the blade cuts the thread coming from the spool.
To complete the operation, when the thread has been cut, the end of the thread coming from the spool can be easily removed from the machine without the need to raise the thread guide, by pulling this thread towards the box. bine as soon as it can slide freely between the jaws of the mobile and fixed gripping devices of the tensioning device. The end of the wire will not have suffered any serious damage from the tensioning device and will be ready to be introduced into the pivoting gripping device for the start of a new operation.
