Device for measuring the consistency of paints and varnishes.
The processability of paints and paints depends on their E = onsisteaz; In particular, the consistency at the temperature of use is of interest, as it is significantly influenced by the temperature, and on the other hand, a certain degree of fluidity is the prerequisite for paints and varnishes to be processed appropriately, i.e. technically flawless and thus at the same time economical.
For: Determining the consistency of paints and varnishes, simple devices are already in use that can also be operated by unskilled people. These devices consist of a vessel with a certain capacity, which has an outlet nozzle at the bottom. The flow time of all or part of the test material in the vessel is measured, either at the normal temperature of 200 C or preferably at the brewing list temperature. This can be relatively low in winter, with hot spray paints it is noticeably above room temperature.
So far, the devices mentioned were made of metal (sheet iron, brass, light metal).
In the case of consistency measurements, however, the measurement accuracy often left a lot to be desired, the measurement results were not easily reproducible and did not correspond to the conditions of use. Investigations have now shown that the poor reproducibility of the measurement results was due, among other things, to the good thermal conductivity of the metals, which made it very difficult to maintain the desired temperature; Even the warmth of the hand was annoying when using the metal measuring devices, because the consistency of the test item is so strongly temperature-dependent. The easy deformability of the metals proved to be a further source of errors.
In workshops, factories, etc. that process lacquers and paints, the measuring instruments must be treated with little care, sometimes rough, under all circumstances, and in such operations it is unavoidable that the instruments fall on the floor. The result was denting of the vessel.
The subject matter of the present invention is a device for measuring the consistency of paints and varnishes, characterized by a vessel made of thermally hardened phenolic resin and a nozzle arranged at the lower end of the vessel.
The hardened phenolic resin has the advantage over metals that it conducts heat poorly and does not permanently deform in the event of impacts. Either the shape is completely retained or the vessel breaks, so that unnoticed changes in the capacity of the vessel and the resulting incorrect measurements are excluded.
The phenolic resin also has the advantage that it is processed correctly, especially well hardened - to be insensitive to water and all laughing solvents and, if processed as a "high-grade synthetic resin" without filler, to let the light through and thus the observation of the material to be measured Another advantage is that a very large number of vessels can be produced with one and the same mold, which guarantees that all the dimensions of the vessels are identical.
The vessel is expediently designed with an overflow rim and an annular channel adjoining this, which facilitates complete filling of the vessel without loss of test material.
The vessel is expediently cylindrical or slightly conical at the top (so that it can be lifted off the mold more easily) and conical at the bottom with a wall that advantageously has a slope of about 450 or less.
The outlet nozzle can either be pressed in when the vessel is manufactured or it can be screwed in to be exchangeable. It is best to place the nozzle, which is worked with high precision, sunk from the outside so that it cannot be damaged when the device is set up.
It is advantageously made of rustproof steel, since its dimensional accuracy is not jeopardized by corrosion.
The invention will be explained in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows an embodiment of the subject matter of the invention.
The vessel 1 with the part la, the inner surface of which is slightly conical, that is to say has an angle of at most α0 between the longitudinal axis and the generatrix. and the conical part lb adjoining it has the overflow edge 2 and the annular channel 3 with the outer edge 5 lying somewhat lower than the overflow edge at the top. This structure is made of a thermally cured phenolic resin, which preferably does not contain any filler, so that the light can pass unhindered.
The wall of the conical lower part of the vessel 1b has a nozzle 4 at the lower end which is made of stainless steel. The slope of the cone wall is about 45.0 to the perpendicular.
The vessel is expediently hot-pressed in one piece in the usual way, with the nozzle 4 also being pressed in.
Of course, this can also be screwed onto the bottom opening or screwed into the cone 1b with a thread. In any case, it is advisable to mount the nozzle countersunk in the base part, seen from the outside, so that it is protected from mechanical damage as far as possible.
The vessel can be closed by placing a plate after it has been filled with the nozzle closed - the nozzle is conveniently closed with the finger. If the plate is pulled sideways, the process of leakage begins; Depending on the consistency, the flow time of the entire test material or a certain proportion is measured.
