Man erhält 10 Teile (90% Aus beute) 1:1'-Dimercapto-3:3'-bis-iso-indo- lenyliden.
Process for the preparation of a new indolenylidene. The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a new indolenylidene, namely 1: t'-dimercapto-3: 3'-bis: iso-indolenylidene of the formula
EMI0001.0008
This compound of the formula mentioned can be addressed as dithio-ss-isoindigo.
The designations: dithiodiphthalimide and (in analogy with the known compound m-indolone, see Liebermann and Bistrycki, Ber. Der Deutschen chem. Ges. 1893, 26, 531) bis-m-indothione can also be used.
Another designation that could also be used is bis (3: 4-benzo) -2-pyrrolethione. The applicant prefers the designation 1: 1'-Dimercapto-3: 3'-bis-iso-ixrdolenylidene. 1: 1 '-Dimercapto - 3: 3' -bis-iso-indolenyl- idene sometimes behaves as if it were the formula
EMI0001.0027
possessed, d. H. it seems tautomeric.
When this compound has the second formula, in which case it will be called bis-m-indole-ethione, it also falls within the scope of the present invention.
According to the invention, the 1: 1'-dimercapto-3: 3'-bis-indolenylidene is obtained by treating phthalonitrile in a hydroxyl-containing solvent with hydrogen sulfide or a water-soluble salt thereof. Water-soluble salts of hydrogen sulfide include the alkali metal sulfides (including the sulfides of ammonia) and the alkaline earth metal sulfides, for example: sulfur ammonium, sodium salt hydrate, barium sulfhydrate.
The ammonium sulfur can also be used in the reaction medium either from Am monia and hydrogen sulfide or from an alkali metal sulfide and an Am monium salt of a strong acid, eg. B. chlorine ammonium can be obtained.
The alkali metal sulfides or alkaline earth metal sulfides can also be obtained from the corresponding alkali metal or alkaline earth metal carbonate or hydroxide and hydrogen sulfide.
Is the alkali of a caustic nature, e.g. B. caustic soda, it is preferably only used in limited amounts, at least with the proviso that the hydrosulfide, z. B. Sodium hydrosulfide is formed during the reaction.
It can be assumed that the ammonia has a catalytic effect rather than a direct one. The reaction will apparently proceed according to an equation which, for example, shows the following picture for the process involved in the reaction of phthalonitrile (i.e. phthalonitrile) with hydrogen sulfide:
EMI0002.0017
You can see that free sulfur is produced by looking through the examples described below.
It has been found that, if hydrogen sulfide is used without ammonia, the reaction is facilitated if an alkali other than ammonia is present, without this needing to be in a stoichiometric ratio, as mentioned.
Water and ethyl alcohol are examples of the hydroxyl-containing solvent.
The following examples, which are parts by weight, illustrate the invention without restricting it. Example 1: 20 parts of phthalonitrile are dissolved in 160 parts of warm alcohol, and 18 parts of aqueous ammonia (specific weight 0.88) are added. The mixture is cooled and hydrogen sulfide is introduced into the same. : As soon as dark-colored, plate-shaped crystals appear, the mixture is heated and the introduction of hydrogen sulfide is continued until an excess is present.
The mixture is then boiled until no more ammonia or hydrogen sulfide is evolved, filtered, washed, dried and extracted with carbon disulfide to remove the free sulfur. The small amount of remaining impurities can then be leached out using hot nitrobenzene. The yield is almost quantitative.
The product obtained consists of purple-black crystals of 1: 1'-dimeroapto-3: 3'-bis-iso-indolenylidene. It dissolves in hot pyridine with an intense red color and is slightly soluble in aqueous ammonia and in aqueous sodium carbonate. Example 2: 5 parts of phthalonitrile are dissolved in 50 parts of boiling ethyl alcohol. The mixture is cooled and bubbled into the same hydrogen sulfide for about 30 minutes.
The mixture is then boiled and the introduction of hydrogen sulfide continued for 8 hours, during which ammonia is evolved and a reddish-brown precipitate is formed. After further boiling until no more ammonia or hydrogen sulfide is evolved, the mixture is filtered and the residue washed and extracted with carbon disulfide or aqueous cyan sodium to remove free sulfur. The product obtained is 1: 1'-dimercapto-3: 3'-bis-iso-indolenylidene.
Example 3 Hydrogen sulfide is passed into 68 parts of 24% ammonia until the weight has increased to 95 parts. 20 parts of phthalonitrile are dissolved in 60 parts of boiling ethyl alcohol. This solution is then cooled and stirred with the other solution for 3 hours. Dark blue, needle-like crystals form. These are filtered, washed and extracted with carbon disulfide and then with acetone. The product is 1: 1'-dimercapto-3: 3'-bis-iso-indolenylidene.
Example 5 parts of phthalonitrile are dissolved in 40 parts of boiling ethyl alcohol. The solution is then cooled and stirred with a solution of 14 parts of chlorammonium and 30 parts of sulfur sodium crystals in 30 parts of water for 18 hours at 20 C. The mixture is then boiled for 3 hours, cooled, and the precipitate is filtered off, extracted with carbon disulfide and washed with acetone. The product obtained is 1: 1'-dimercapto-3: 3'-bis-iso-indolenylidene.
Example 5: 4 parts of sodium hydroxide are dissolved in 10 parts of water, and 100 parts of ethyl alcohol are added. Then hydrogen sulphide is passed in for about one hour until the solution is saturated. 6.4 parts of powdered phthalonitrile are then added at room temperature and hydrogen sulfide is bubbled into the stirred mixture over 3 hours. The mixture is then boiled and hydrogen sulfide is passed in for three more hours, after which the boiling is continued until no more ammonia or hydrogen sulfide is evolved.
The solution thus obtained is diluted with water and made acidic with hydrochloric acid, whereupon the filtered brown precipitate is filtered off, washed and dried. It is then extracted with boiling carbon disulfide to remove the sulfur. The product obtained is 1: 1'-dimercapto-3: 3'-bis-iso-indolenylidene. Example 6: 6.4 parts of phthalonitrile are dissolved in 80 parts of boiling ethyl alcohol. The solution is then cooled and treated with a solution of 10.6 parts of anhydrous sodium carbonate in 30 parts of water.
Hydrogen sulphide is then passed into the mixture, which has been cooled to 0 C., for 1 hour and then for a further 3 hours, during which the mixture is boiled. After further boiling, until no more ammonia or hydrogen sulfide escapes, the precipitate is filtered off and extracted with carbon sulphide. The product obtained is 1: 1'-dimercapto-3: 3'-bis-iso-indolenylidene.
Example 7: 10 parts of phthalonitrile are added to a warm, saturated solution of barium hydroxide in 70 parts of ethyl alcohol. When the nitrile has dissolved, the solution is heated in a reflux condenser on a steam bath and hydrogen sulfide is introduced into it. A brown precipitate begins to precipitate almost immediately. The introduction of hydrogen sulfide is continued for 1 hour, then interrupted while the mixture is refluxed for 15 minutes in order to remove hydrogen sulfide and ammonia.
After cooling, the mixture is filtered and the precipitate is washed with ethyl alcohol. It is then leached with carbon disulfide and dried. 10 parts (90% of yield) 1: 1'-dimercapto-3: 3'-bis-iso-indolenylidene are obtained.
