Process for the preparation of an azo dye. It has been found that a new, valuable azo dye is obtained when ethyloxethylaminobenzene, the diazo compound of 1-aminfo-4-nitrobenzene and oxalic acid, act on one another in such a way that
that the acidic oxalic acid ester of the ethyloxyethyl amino group is formed and the diazo radical occurs in the 4-position to the tertiary amino group.
The dye obtained in this way forms a dark powder which dissolves in water with a scarlet color and dyes the acetate artificial silk from an aqueous solution in sharp, laurel shades.
Example: 138 parts of 1-amino-4-nitrobenzene are diazotized as usual. The diazo solution is allowed to flow into an aqueous, ice-cold solution of the acidic oxalic acid ester of ethyloxethylaminobenzene with stirring.
The oxalic acid ester is prepared by treating 165 parts of ethyloxethylaminobenzene with 135 parts of anhydrous oxalic acid in boiling toluene, the water that forms being distilled off during the esterification, then the toluene is distilled off and the remaining ester in 2000 Parts of water added.
After the diazo solution has flowed into this aqueous solution of the oxalic acid ester, 600 parts of sodium acetate are added and the dye formed is filtered off. It is then stirred with 1000 parts of water, neutralized with ammonia and filtered off. When dry it forms a dark powder, which dissolves in water with a scarlet red color, and dyes the acetate silk from aqueous solution in the same shade.
