Polierrad.
Fig. 1 ist ein Längsschnitt durch ein.
Polishing wheel. In practice, it is common practice for surface manufacturing work to grind the coarser surfaces of a workpiece with a grinding wheel: which is made with a flexible or soft core, the working surface of which is coated with a suitable abrasive. Up to now, such wheels have been made from leather, walrus skin, sheepskin, etc., the leather being wound in a spiral around a wooden hub for the production of a disc or cylinder.
Such wheels are expensive and over time will become too hard for practical use unless the wheels are frequently turned and the glue carrying the abrasive is removed from them. Some attempts have been made to substitute woven fabric for the leather making up the body of such wheels, but these attempts have failed because: the fabric was too easily impregnated or soaked with the glue that was not removed and so became too rough or rigid for this use. In addition, the woven fabric was subject to rapid disintegration due to the separation of the warp and weft threads under:
the attack of centrifugal force, so that .the yarns on the working surface of the wheel were cut or torn, caught on the workpiece or were thrown off.
The present invention relates to a polishing wheel, which is characterized in that it has a number of layers of .knitted fabric, which consists of fibrous threads, which are: so knitted that there are through openings in the fabric for receiving and retaining an abrasive and that they form a resilient body which is round in cross-section and which is free of transverse threads in that part of the same ben that comes into contact with the workpiece to be treated.
In the drawing, three exemplary embodiments of the subject matter of the invention are illustrated. Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through a. Polishing wheel for grinding or polishing the peripheral edge of a cylindrical body, e.g. B.
the edge of an open cooking vessel; Figure 2 is an end elevation of the polishing wheel of Figure 1; Fig. 3 is a partially sectioned side view of a disc-type polishing wheel with spindle and retaining flanges; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of an end grinding cylinder including its retaining liner; Fig. 5 is a cross section taken along line 5-5 of Fig. 4 through the polishing cylinder of Fig. 4 and illustrates the construction thereof.
The polishing wheel according to FIG. 1 has a cylindrical hub or a core 10 which is formed with an axial bore for receiving a shaft stub 11. The core is shown with depressions 12 for receiving the flange 13 BEZW. the nut 14 drilled open. The circumference of the core 10 is undercut over the greater part of its length in order to form shoulders or ribs 15 which are able to hold the material against longitudinal movement on the core.
The body of the buffing wheel is formed from a knitted fabric 16 which is wrapped around the core 10 and on itself to form a wall of suitable thickness, and so attach the wheel to the workpiece on which it is to be used to adapt. The knitted fabric 16 extends outwardly over the front and rear surfaces of the core to form a body or shell which yields under pressure on the working edges 16a of the cylinder. In the manufacture of the wheel, the core 10 is preferably first covered with glue or some other adhesive and then each turn of the material is glued onto the previous one.
Before the glue or the cement material has set, strands of wire or retractable clamps 17 are pulled around the fabric at the shoulders 15 in order to ensure that the fabric adheres or secures to the core.
In the manufacture of the fabric by means of a special flat-bed shuttle knitting machine designed by the applicant himself, the work is carried out in such a way that the stitches rub form ribs that cross with parallel cords in the fabric. The fabric produced in this way is arranged on the grinding cylinder in such a way that the ribs mentioned lie in planes perpendicular to the cylinder axis.
Since the cords therefore ge long with their Emden in contact with the workpiece, respectively. run at a right angle to the direction of the length of the ribs, there is no risk of the fabric separating on.
Thus, if during the working period the adhesive and the abrasive are removed by wear and tear and the cords are covered, there are no visual links or loose cords that can attach to the piece to be polished, as such cords, if. they are worn out, forming short, free-ended fibers like plush fabric.
The fabric is knitted from a relatively moderately hard or tightly twisted thread into stitches of ample size in order to create holes or spaces in the fabric for the admission of glue and emery in the working surfaces of the wheel.
Such a construction, which of course can be modified in its flexibility to adapt to special types of workpieces, allows the work surface and the tubular part of the fabric between the end of the core 10 and the work surface 1.6a of the polishing wheel can bend the circumference of the workpiece and follow it in a more effective manner than was previously feasible with the commercially known wheels of this type.
As shown, the fabric overhangs both ends of the core 1 () to form a double working surface on the cylinder so that the wheel can be turned in its longitudinal direction on the spindle when the abrasive fabric has worn out.
In the embodiment according to FIG. 3, the polishing wheel 20 contains a plurality of active ingredient disks 21, which are arranged on a spindle 22, which with flanges and lock nuts 23 respectively. 24 is provided, as is customary in 'discs of this type used for polishing wheels. In this embodiment, the peripheral edges of the disks are covered with glue and emery to provide a work surface 25.
In this embodiment, the fabric has cords which run radially and form the body of the fabric, which are crossed by rows of stitches that form ribs and run in the circumferential direction of the disk. Since these radially extending cords are arranged with their ends facing the workpiece or at a right angle to the direction in which the fabric can be separated, there is no possibility if the wear has advanced that the circumference or working surface of the Wheel form loose cord ends that could get caught on the workpiece.
Thus, when the adhesive and abrasive on the surface of the wheel are worn out so that the material is covered, and this is also worn, the knots and loops on the circumferential edge only fray and look like bristles on a brush . A risk of getting caught on the workpiece is thus excluded.
The embodiment of Figures 4 and 5 includes a cylinder 30 of fabric which is helically wrapped around itself to form a full cylinder body where the fabric in this form is bound and supported by a socket present an end wall as a work surface for the workpiece.
The, version can. consist of a tubular body 31 with jaws 32 and a clamping nut 33, the nut being able to press the jaws inwards and against. In this embodiment, the adhesive and abrasive are applied to the free end 34 of the cylinder and, if desired, the opposite end as well, to provide an easily accessible fresh work surface on the grinding wheel.
In this embodiment, the material is formed like that according to FIG. Obviously, the work surface 34 can be designed in any suitable shape, and the wheel can be adapted to the scope of the work piece on which the polishing wheel is to be used. For example, the surface 34 can be conical, concave, or both, or in any shape corresponding to the pattern or the shape and shape of the workpiece.
