Description

4]a0 + Si = 2]a0 . Si0z -I- 2Ba.

Process for the production of metallic barium by thermal] reduction of starting materials containing barium oxide. As reducing agents for the thermal extraction of barium on a laboratory scale from raw materials containing darium oxide, aluminum or silicon in particular have been suggested, while coal has not proven itself due to the risk of reoxidation of the barium formed by the carbon oxide formed.

In the main patent, a method is now described, according to which in the thermal reduction of barium oxide-containing starting materials with the help of aluminum starting mixtures are used in which the molar ratio of barium oxide: aluminum is about 4: 2.

Even the reduction with silicon does not proceed, as might initially be assumed, according to equation 2] a0 -f- Si = @ Si02 + 2Ba, but, as was found, proceeds roughly according to the following equation:

4] a0 + Si = 2] a0. Si0z -I- 2Ba. For this reason, it is necessary for full utilization of the reducing agent to apply the barium oxide in an excess over the amount equivalent to the reducing agent and previously assumed to be sufficient. According to the last-mentioned equation, the composition of the reaction mixtures is therefore chosen so that when silicon is used, the molar ratio of barium oxide to silicon is about 4: 1.

The reaction rate of the mixtures can be increased considerably by adding alkali or alkaline earth fluorides, in particular barium fluoride, in amounts between 0.5 and 5 percent by weight, preferably 2 percent by weight, to the reaction mixture.

Example: A pressed mixture of 640 parts by weight of barium oxide (96%), 30 parts by weight of ferrosilicon (containing 93% Si) and 10 parts by weight of barium fluoride was placed in a tube furnace and in a vacuum at <B> 1300 'left to react for two hours. The liquid-condensed barium metal was then removed from the furnace by passing a stream of hydrogen over it.
