Description

Process for the thermal extraction of the alkaline earth metals calcium, strontium and barium.
In the thermal extraction of the alkaline earth metals calcium, strontium and barium from raw materials containing alkaline earth oxide with the help of silicon and / or aluminum at temperatures below the melting point of the reaction residues, be it under normal pressure in a hydrogen atmosphere or in a vacuum, u. In particular, if the reaction mixture is in the form of pressed molded bodies, it has been observed that the reaction does not proceed at a uniform rate, but rather slows down more and more over time.
Even an increase in the temperature of the reaction mixture in the later stages of the reaction cannot accelerate it significantly and entails the risk that parts of the reaction mixture or the residue may melt, which is undesirable.
It has now been found that the addition of fluorides of the alkali or alkaline earth metals to the reduction mixture in small amounts contributes to a considerable acceleration of the reaction rate, in particular in the more advanced reaction sections. The amount of fluoride

best results can be achieved with a fluoride addition of around 2%.
The fluoride of the alkaline earth metal occurring in the reaction mixture is expediently used in each case as an additive.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A process for the thermal recovery of the alkaline earth metals calcium, strontium and barium with the aid of silicon and / or aluminum, characterized in that alkali or alkaline earth fluorides are added to the reaction mixture in amounts of 0-5 to 5 percent by weight, preferably 2 percent by weight.
