proceed to the production of a Lenkotriarylmethanfarstoffes. It has been found that a new, valuable leukotriarylmethane dye is obtained if 2-oxy-3-methyl-5-aldehydobenzene-1-carboxylic acid is reacted with β- (2-methylpheniTl-amino) ethanesulphonic acid.
The reaction can be carried out by heating the starting materials in a weakly acidic aqueous solution, or in an organic solvent, for example in an alcoholic solution, in the presence of zinc chloride, or by heating in sulfuric acid. The resulting leukotriarylmethane dye is a light gray powder that dissolves easily in alkalis and acids and is drawn onto wool.
The leuco dye can be used in the usual way by treatment with oxidizing agents, eg. B. with lead dioxide, convert into a triaryl methane dye. The dyestuff produced in this way can be converted into the corresponding complex metal compounds as such or after it has been dyed on the fiber.
The complex chromium compound produced in substance is easily soluble and provides very uniform red-violet dyeings, especially on animal fibers such as wool, silk or leather. It can also be used to dye paper. Chromation on the fiber also gives very real, red-violet colors. The oxidation of the leukotriarylmethane dye can also be carried out simultaneously with the chromation.
If necessary, the dye produced from the leuco compound can be converted into paints by reacting with calcium or barium salts. If the dye is treated with Phosphorwolf ram or molybdenum compounds, particularly lightfast colored lakes are obtained. Example: A mixture of 18 parts of 2-oxy-3-methyl-5-aldehydobenzene-1-carboxylic acid and 42.8 parts of ss- (2-methylphenylamino) ethane sulfonic acid in 250 parts of water is boiled under reflux until the aldehyde used is consumed.
After cooling, the leukotriarylmethane dye which has crystallized out is filtered off, washed and dried. It is a light gray powder that is easily soluble in alkalis and acids and pulls on wool.
One can have the leuco connection with. Oxidize lead dioxide in an acidic aqueous solution and convert the resulting dye into a chromium complex compound by boiling it with Chromforinia.tlösung, which dyes wool and leather in very even red-violet tones.
The leuco compound can be oxidized directly to the chromium-containing dye on the fiber by oxidation with bichromate. Very even, beautiful, pure red-violet tones are obtained on wool, which are particularly washable and lightfast.
