Process for the preparation of N-yinyl arbazole. It has been found that the addition of acetylene to carbazole for the purpose of forming N-vinylcarbazole can be accelerated particularly sharply if a strongly alkaline compound is used as a catalyst together with a heterocyclic compound which contains nitrogen in a tertiary bond, used.
Such heterocyclic compounds are above all pyridine, quinoline, isoquinoline or their derivatives. The heterocyclic bases that are formed when ammonia is added to the reaction mixture are also suitable. Often, even small amounts of the substances mentioned are sufficient to accelerate the addition of acetylene to carbazole significantly.
If, for example, carbazole is purified by recrystallization from pyridine and the resulting carbazole, to which pyridine residues still adhere, is subjected to treatment with acetylene in the presence of strong alkali, these relatively small amounts of pyridine already cause a significantly accelerated uptake of acetylene. However, the accelerating substances can also be added in larger amounts so that they also serve as a solvent for the carbazole in the treatment with acetylene.
In this way, it is not only possible to produce significantly larger quantities of N-vinylcarbazole in one plant at the same time, i.e. to make better use of the plant, but the addition of acetylene is also much more complete, as has been shown in the presence of the substances mentioned, compared to working without their addition.
The following experiments clearly show the particular value and technical advantage of the present process: 50 g of carbazole, 50 cm of cyelohexane and 2 g of potassium hydroxide, purified by sublimation, are poured into three identical pressure vessels with a volume of about 250 cm. The first vessel does not receive any further addition; 2 g of pyridine are added to the second.
After flushing out and injecting nitrogen to 3 a1-, after heating to <B> 180 '</B> C, acetylene is injected up to 20 to \? 5 a1-, while the di-uek vessels are constantly shaken. In the third pressure vessel, ammonia gas is used instead of nitrogen to dilute the acetylene. After the acetylene uptake has ended, the content of the <RTI
