Apparatus for heat exchange. Since the production of honeycomb automobile radiators, continuous efforts have been made to obtain thermal appliances by means of temperature exchange elements formed according to the same design. The studies carried out on this subject have not given practical results allowing the various devices for transmitting heat or cold to be manufactured on an industrial scale according to the honeycomb principle.
The object of the present invention is an apparatus for heat exchange, characterized in that it has at least one bundle of tubes, at least the ends of which are of polygonal section.

Fig. 23 is a section taken along the line 31-N of FIG. 22.
Figs. 1 and 2 show a tube isolated from a bundle, of circular section and with polygonal ends 2. These ends can be concentric with respect to the tube 1, as shown, or eccentric. The ends of the tube of FIG. 3 are formed by cups 3 attached by welding to the tube 1. In the tube of FIG. 4, one of the sides of each of the polygonal ends has a notch 4 intended for the wise passage of a fluid when the tube is closed at both ends.
The corrugated tubes 5 according to FIG. 5 absorb the effect of expansion, which is particularly important for tubes of a certain length.
In fig. 6, the exchange surface of the tube is increased by helical fins 6 attached to the outside of the tube. In fig. 7, internal fins 7 form baffles creating a retarding action on the passage of the fluid circulating in the tube, forcing it to make a longer path, hence better temperature exchange. The tube 8 shown in FIGS. 8 and 9 contains tubes 9 parallel to each other and to the axis of the tube 8. These tubes 9 are fixed to the tube 8 and made closely integral with each other to thus increase the exchange surface.
The tube 54 re presented in FIG. 9a is of polygo nal section over its entire length and contains a cylindrical tube 55 in contact with the tube 54 by angles 56, which ensures a very large exchange surface for a minimum bulk.
The apparatus shown in fig. 10 and 11 consists of a tube bundle 10 formed by means of tubes such as that of FIG. 1, assembled next to each other by joining the polygonal ends along their contour, for example by welding. This bundle 10 is placed in a cylindrical shell 11, the edges 12 of which are joined by welding with the outline 13 of the ends of the bundle. tightly, by folding the edges of the ferrule over this contour. In the apparatus of FIGS. 12 and 13, the edges of the ferrule are not folded back, but a plate 16 is interposed between the ferrule and the outer sides of the polygons.
Plates 17 close off the two ends of the tubes which are of the type shown in FIG. 4, in order to communicate with each other by notches 4. The tubes thus united as surent a maximum surface in a very small volume. In addition, the small distance between the tubes increases the transmission between the fluid located inside and that located outside the tubes.
The cylindrical shell 11 comprises an inlet bulb 14 and an outlet nozzle 15. The plates 17 carry one an inlet port 18 and the other an outlet port 19. In the bundle, the fluid passes through the path. indicated by the arrows, which ensures the most efficient use of calories or frigories to be absorbed or transmitted.
Figs. 14 and 15 show an embodiment constituting a refrigerating appliance. It comprises a beam similar to that of the apparatus of FIGS. 10 and 11. The refrigerant fluid enters a shell through a tube 14 and leaves it through a tube 15. By circulating around the tubes of the bundle, it quickly and efficiently cools the fluid or the tube. air circulating in the tubes of the bundle. The fluid or the cooled air is conducted and then returned to its destination.
The apparatus of FIG. 16 constitutes a heating radiator having the elements described below. The exchange surface of this radiator consists of the entire outer casing 20 and the entire inner surface of the tubes of the bundle 20a in which the air to be heated circulates. This very large exchange surface in a reduced volume, reduces the size of the radiator in significant proportions. This assembly can be placed in the room to be heated or else to be cooled in the corner on a column 21 pierced at its base with openings 23 to allow the air to be cooled or heated to enter. The low pressure caused by the radiator causes the air to rise in the column, it passes and heats up in the interior of the tubes of the bundle and diffuses to the upper part.
All supply and return piping can be in the ceiling or in the cornice.
The apparatus shown in fig. 17 and 18 is a vertical boiler comprising a tube bundle formed by tubes such as those of FIG. 7, or with helical baffles 7. The polygonal ends of the tubes are not shown. The boiler comprises a base 24 having an opening 25 for the passage of the body of a burner, for example fuel oil. The upper part of the base is closed by a sheet which carries an opening 27 for the passage of the burner flame. Combustion takes place in a Water-Jacket 28 consisting of a double-walled envelope in which the water to be heated or vaporized circulates.
This casing is protected, in the part subjected to the strongest radiation from the burner flame, by a refractory part 30. An opening 31, at the lower part of the Water-Jacket, is closed on ignition and adjustment of the flame. This opening can be closed by a sheet metal buffer. The outer casing of the tube bundle constitutes the inner part of the Water-Jacket. Communication is effected by means of orifices 33 formed in this casing at the lower part of the tube bundle.
For the communication with the devices of use, orifices are formed, one 34 at the lower part of the Water Jacket, the other 35 at the upper part of the tube bundle. The outer casing of the tube bundle is extended in the form of a smoke box 37, provided with a cover 38 which allows easy access to the bundle for cleaning. A refractory part surrounds the tube bundle as well as the smoke box. The number of baffles 7 depends on the result to be obtained with respect to the depression at the chimney. The combustion gases, after licking the inner wall of the Water-Jacket, pass through the tube bundle under the action of the chimney depression.
The helical device, formed by the baffles 7 gives the gases a gyrating movement and increases the distance to be covered, which results in a remarkable reduction in the temperature of the exhaust fumes. The boiler thus formed can be used both for the production of hot water and for steam. In the first case, it works as a thermosiphon or with active circulation.
The circulation in the thermo-siphon is as follows: Water inlet through port 34 at the bottom of the Water-Jacket, passage through the boiler body through openings 33 and outlet to the use devices through the outlet pipe 35. In the case of an activated circulation, the hot water circulates against the current, that is to say that it arrives at the upper part of the boiler, goes down into the Water-Jacket through holes 33 and exits to the user devices through orifice 34 in the lower part of the boiler.
For the steam, the circulation is the same as that of the thermo-siphon. The use of the boiler as a vaporization device is very advantageous, the steam chamber being crossed by the tubes of the bundle and the distance between these tubes being very small, the steam is superheated.
The apparatus shown in fig. 19 is a horizontal boiler which is an improvement of that shown in FIG. 17 and con runs to the same goal, but with a better yield, due to the double path of the gases which allows a better stripping of these. This boiler is to be recommended in places where the available height is limited. The combustion chamber has the same characteristics as that of fig. 17, the tubes with polygonal ends are as appeared in a tubular bundle placed in the extension of the ferrule forming the hearth.
The assembly of the bundle with the outer cylinder of the boiler is made by a circular plate 39 cut to the template of the outer pro wire of the polygonal ends of the tubes not shown. This first bundle is joined, at its end, to a circular-rimmed plate 40, cut out at its center to the outer template of the bundle. The pla that 40 carries, on a peripherical annular part, a series of polygonal openings for fixing the ends of the tubes forming the second path. These tubes of the second path are longer than those of the first path, over the entire length of the hearth, and are fixed in a third plate 41 of annular shape, the outer edge of which is welded to the shell 42. The fixing of the tubes in the plates 39, 40 and 41 is done by tight and homogeneous hard sou.
The smoke box is formed by two concentric shells 44 and 45 closed, on the one hand, by the third plate 41 up to where the tubes of the second path bring the combustion gases and, on the other hand, by a solid bottom 46 ring-shaped. The central part of the interior vi role is free and serves as a housing for the burner nozzle. This boiler presents an improvement over that shown in FIG. 17, for the following reason: To reach its point of use at the nose of the burner, the air heats up on contact with the inner shell of the smoke box, resulting in a significant improvement in the efficiency of the boiler.
The use and circulation are the same as those listed for the boiler according to fig. 17.
The embodiment shown in FIGS. 20 and 21 is a boiler intended for continuous fire heating: This boiler differs from those of figs. 17, 18 and 19 by the combustion mode used. For the boilers according to fig. 1.7, 18 and 19, the fuel is heavy oil, for the boiler according to fig. 20 and 21, the fuel used is coal. The construction of this boiler is similar to that of fig. 19, with the difference that the focus tube 47 and the tube bundle 48 of the first path are eccentric and that the tubes of the second path are placed concentrically to the tube 47 constituting the focus.
The advantage of this boiler over those currently in use is as follows: Smaller footprint for a larger heat exchange surface, resulting in significantly higher efficiency thanks to the high transmission coefficient, solidity and therefore longer duration than for cast iron boilers intended for the same use. It will be noted that we have not represented the polygonal ends of the tubes in the two bundles.
The tubular bundle shown in Figs. 22 and 23 is formed of tubes such as those shown in FIG. 1. The number of tubes will vary depending on the polygonal shape of the end of the tubes. This bundle forms part of a locomotive boiler constituting an embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention. The two ends 50 of the bundle are extended by sleeves 51 of circular section which encompass the polygonal shape of all the tubes, by a suitable constriction, the intimate and tight connection being ensured by welding. The length of the sleeves is variable.
The bundles thus obtained are fixed, by the sleeves 51, by mandrelling in plates 52.1a, the length of the sleeves depending, in this case, on the length of the spindle of the device to be mandrel. It is of course possible to choose another method of fixing the bundles, for example by providing a frustoconical ring on the sleeves, the fixing in the plates 52 then taking place by conical fitting, metal to metal, of the Berendorff type. The length of the sleeves will be a function, on the one hand, of the length reserved for the constriction on the polygonal shape and, on the other hand, of the width of the conical section ring.
The locomotive boiler constructed by means of these bundles has the advantages of a very high heat transfer coefficient and a maximum heating surface with minimum space requirement.
If we examine the tube bundle described above, from the point of view of its resistance to pressure, we see that this pressure acts on the parts 53 forming a solution of continuity between the cylindrical part and the polygonal part of each of the bundle tubes. The whole of the beam being constituted by juxtaposition and welding of the flat parts of the polygonal ends of each tube, this makes it possible to eliminate the use of the tube plate and the work of the pressure is entirely absorbed by the tube itself. -even. The tubes being joined by their welded ends, adjusted to a tenth of a millimeter, it can be considered that the welding work is zero.
With the same exchange surface, the locomotive boiler shown partially in fig. 22 and 23 weigh much less and are more affordable for higher efficiency than a single tube boiler.
