Verfahren zur Darstellung eines gerbenden Stoffes. Das im Hauptpatent Nr.<B>156126</B> beschrie bene saure Kondensationsverfahren gibt in solchen Fällen unbefriedigende Ergebnisse, wo das angewandte Dioxydiphenylsulfon oder die verwendete aromatische Sulfosäure durch entsprechende Substitution zu reaktionsträge geworden sind; auch kann die Schwerlöslich keit bestimmter Dioxydipheny lsulfone einem guten Reaktionsverlauf hinderlich sein.
Es wurde nun gefunden, dass man dieser Schwierigkeit begegnen kann, wenn man die durch , alkalische -Kondensation aus Dioxy- diphenylsulfonen und Formaldehyd erhaltenen Reaktionsprodukte nachträglich mit aroma tischen Sulfosäuren in saurer Lösung erhitzt.
Gemäss dem den Gegenstand dieses Pa tentes bildenden Verfahren kann ein in Wasser in jedem Verhältnis klar lösliches und zum Gerben wertvolles Produkt erhalten werden, wenn man 4,4'-Dioxydiphenylsulfon in kon zentrierter, ätzalkalischer Lösung mit Form aldehyd kondensiert, dann ansäuert und mit Diphenylglykoläther-p-sulfosäure der Formel

in stark saurer Lösung weiter erhitzt. Der neue Gerbstoff liefert nach der Gerbung her vorragend gefüllte Leder von vorzüglicher Lichtechtheit. In verdünnten, wässerigen Lö sungen wird durch Ferrichlorid ein blauvio letter Niederschlag erzeugt.
<I>Beispiel:</I> 120 Teile des 4,4' - Dioxydiphenylsulfon- 5-carbinols, erhalten durch 24stündiges Be handeln von 100 Teilen 4,4'-Dioxydiphenyl- sulfon mit 80 Teilen 40 0%iger Natronlauge, 80 Teilen Wasser und 48 Teilen Formalde hyd 50 0 und nachfolgendes vorsichtiges Aus fällen mit Salzsäure,
werden mit 100 Teilen Diphenylglykoläther - p - sulfosäure (erhalten durch 11/2stündiges Erhitzen von 100 Teilen Diphenylglykoläther mit 110 Teilen 93 %iger Schwefelsäure bei 110 0 bis zur Wasserlös lichkeit) und 50 Teilen Wasser 11/4 - 11/2 Stunden auf 106-110' erhitzt.
Nach erfolg- ter Kondensation ist das Produkt leicht in Wasser löslich und wird zu Gerbzwecken zuerst durch Anneutralisieren so eingestellt, dass die Brühe eben kongoneutral reagiert.
Process for the preparation of a tanning substance. The acidic condensation process described in main patent no. 156126 gives unsatisfactory results in cases where the dioxydiphenyl sulfone or the aromatic sulfonic acid used have become too inert due to appropriate substitution; the poor solubility of certain dioxydiphenyl sulfones can also prevent the reaction from proceeding well.
It has now been found that this difficulty can be countered if the reaction products obtained by alkaline condensation from dioxydiphenyl sulfones and formaldehyde are subsequently heated with aromatic sulfonic acids in acidic solution.
According to the process forming the subject of this patent, a product which is clearly soluble in water in any ratio and valuable for tanning can be obtained if 4,4'-dioxydiphenylsulfone is condensed in concentrated, caustic alkaline solution with formaldehyde, then acidified and with diphenyl glycol ether -p-sulfonic acid of the formula

further heated in strongly acidic solution. After tanning, the new tanning agent produces leathers with excellent fillings and excellent lightfastness. In dilute, aqueous solutions, ferric chloride produces a blue-violet precipitate.

After condensation, the product is easily soluble in water and, for tanning purposes, is first adjusted by neutralizing it so that the broth reacts in a Congo-neutral manner.
