Process for the production of chrome leather.
It has been found that solutions of the readily soluble chromium formate are more suitable for tanning hides than the previously used salts of chromium, e.g. B. Chrome alum. The advantages of using chromium formate solutions are that tanning takes place more quickly than with the old method and that the addition of alkali during the tanning process is not necessary. This results in chrome leather with consistently constant, excellent properties.
To carry out the tanning process, a solution of pure chromium formate can be used, represented by double conversion of concentrated chromium sulfate solution and sodium formate and removal of the precipitated Glauber's salt by centrifugation, or directly the reaction product diluted with water, which is created by adding a concentrated chromium sulfate solution with solid sodium formate. One can start from a neutral or basic chromium sulphate solution.
The success of the present process compared to the known processes is based on the fact that the tanning process does not release mineral acid, but rather formic acid. The presence of sodium formate in the chrome tanning liquor has already been mentioned in British patent specification No. 14293/1896. According to the tests, sodium formate does not settle in dilute solution with ('chromium sulfate or
Chromium chloride with the formation of chromium formate and even in the event that the total amount of the sodium formate in solution according to the above-mentioned English patent would react with chromium sulfate or chloride, the amount of formic acid would only be sufficient, about a fifth! of the chromium, so that, according to the method of the patent specification mentioned, the (tanning process is primarily carried out with a chromium sulfate or chromium chloride solution. As a result, the aforementioned procedures are not achieved.
EMI1.1
The finishing of the leather tanned in this way is the one otherwise used for chrome leather.
Example: 2.
42 parts by weight of solid sodium formate are stirred into 100 parts by weight of chromium sulfate solution with a chromium oxide content of 15% or 28 parts by weight of solid sodium formate are stirred into 100 parts by weight of basic chromium - # - sulfate solution. After standing for about two hours, the mixture is diluted with five to ten times the amount of water and the pelt is treated with this tanning liquor as indicated in Example 1.
