Erhalten: 198 gr reinen Diäthyl- malonsäure-diäthylester, d. i.
92 0% d. Th., Kp. 12 : 100 0.
Process for the esterification of diethyl malonic acid with alcohols of the fatty series. The invention relates to a process for the esterification of diethyl malonic acid with alcohols of the fatty series. As is well known, diethyl malonic acid can only be esterified poorly and incompletely by the usual process. Diethyl malonic acid does not react with alcohol in the presence of mineral acid at room temperature, but at higher temperatures mainly diethyl acetic acid ethyl ester is formed (Beilstein 4.
Edition, e.g. Volume, supplementary work, page 285). A technically useful esterification with higher aliphatic alcohols appears to be even less feasible in view of the expected lower reactivity and the higher boiling points.
It has now been found that diethyl malonic acid can be esterified with any aliphatic alcohols relatively easily and with very good results if the esterification is carried out in the presence of a neutral substance as the solvent for the starting materials. Strangely enough, the splitting off of carbonic acid then takes place almost completely. Gasoline, benzene, chlorinated hydrocarbons, ethers, etc. can be used as neutral substances that serve as solvents.
The amount of solvent is expediently chosen to be of a similar order of magnitude as the amount of alcohol. A little more alcohol is generally sufficient, e.g. B. 20% more than is required according to theory. As the catalysts, known ones such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, sulfonic acids, acid sulfuric acid esters and the like can be used.
The process is expediently carried out in such a way that the starting materials are heated to the boil. The vapors are advantageously enriched in water in a column, condensed, the water is separated off, and the remaining distillate portions are then returned to the reaction vessel. When all of the acid has been esterified, the catalyst can be removed by washing or neutralization and the ester recovered in pure form by distillation.
Example 1: 160 gr diethyl malonic acid, 150 gr abs. Ethyl alcohol, 150 grams of benzene, 16 grams of concentrated sulfuric acid are distilled in a column until the calculated amount of water has separated, which takes about 24 hours. The temperature in the reaction liquid is between 70 and 80 '. The temperature of the steam is 63-65 0. After cooling, it is neutralized with soda and fractionated in a vacuum.
Received: 198 grams of pure diethyl malonic acid diethyl ester, d. i.
92 0% d. Th., Bp. 12: 100 0. Example 2: 160 grams of malonic acid, 175 grams of butanol, 150 grams of gasoline with a boiling point of 70-80 0.16 grams of concentrated sulfuric acid are distilled together. The temperature in the liquid is 80-100 °, that at the top of the column 67-70 °.
The calculated amount of water is distilled off within 10 hours. The piston residue is neutralized and fractionated against the Congo. Obtained: 2 "08 gr = 95% of theory. Dibutyl diethyl malonic acid, boiling point 12-143-146". Example 3:
According to example 2, butanol, sulfuric acid and gasoline are first boiled on their own, so that the sulfuric acid reacts with butanol to form butylsulfuric acid. Then diethyl malonic acid is added and the procedure is as indicated in Example 2.
