Process for the preparation of 3-methylal-3-oxymethyl-n-pentane. The invention relates to a process for the production of the previously unknown 3-3fethylal-3-ogymethyl-n-pentane, which is characterized in that 3-methylal-n-pentane is condensed with formaldehyde.
The procedure here is that 3-methylal-n-pentane is mixed with formaldehyde and subjected to the action of one of the known substances that catalyze aldol condensation, for example sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, potash solution, etc. To improve the dissolution of an aqueous formaldehyde solution in 3-methylal-n-pentane, the addition of a solubilizer, for example methanol, is recommended.
In order to achieve a uniform course of the reaction, the temperature is expediently kept within certain limits, which can vary depending on the type of catalyst used; when using caustic soda, 8-12 have proven to be beneficial; another advantage can be achieved by using an excess of 3-methylal-n-pentane over formaldehyde; In contrast to formaldehyde, 3-methylaln-pentane is a relatively stable substance, so that the excess can be recovered unchanged without difficulty.
When using equi-molecular amounts for the aldehydes, a conversion of 54 / o of theory based on formaldehyde is achieved; on the other hand, if 2 moles of 3-methyl al-n-pentane are allowed to act on 1 mole of formaldehyde, the conversion, based on formaldehyde, increases to W / o the theory. The yield is as good as quantitative based on both formaldehyde and 3-methylal-n-petan. The compound obtained according to the invention serves as a valuable starting material for chemical syntheses and, above all, for the production of drugs.
Example: To 100 parts by weight of 3-methylal-n-pentane in 140 parts by weight of methanol, 54 parts by weight of a 28.5% strength formaldehyde solution and 13 parts by weight of a 24% strength caustic soda solution are added at 8-120% with stirring run in. After the reaction has ended, it is acidified and the 3-methylal-3-oxymethyl-n-pentane formed is isolated by distillation.
The pure product has a boiling point of 14 96 ', it is not miscible with water, after prolonged standing, polymerization and crystallization occur. The analysis provides exactly the right values for the body described: Calculated: C = 64.61% H = 10.78% Found:
0 = -64.81% H = 10.85% The conversion based on formaldehyde is 94% of theory. The yield based on formaldehyde and 3-methylal-n-pentane each is 980% of theory.
