Process for the preparation of a dye of the anthracite series. It has been found that valuable condensation products are obtained if anthraquinones, the one -NH2 group or a -1 \ 'H-alkyl group in an alpha position and the one or more groups of the formula -NH-aryl-NH2 contained in another alpha position,
treated with halohydrins in the presence of acid-binding agents with or without the use of diluents or solvents at ordinary or elevated pressure. The halohydrin itself, which is used in excess in this case, can advantageously be used as diluent or solvent.
When using anthraquinone compounds which, in addition to the group in the alpha position, -NH-aryl-NH2, also contain an unsubstituted NH2 group in the core, 2 mol of the halohydrin can react with the anthraquinone compound containing two free amino groups. However, it is not entirely certain whether such double condensation always occurs. Apparently the result is different depending on the cooking time.
If, for example, 1-amino-4- (p'-aminophenyl -) - aminoanthraquinone is used, boiling with excess halohydrin for about 2 hours means that probably only the phenylamino group reacts, whereas when boiling for about 8 hours both amino groups probably react. The condensation products produced according to the present process are very soluble in organic solvents and have a surprisingly high affinity for cellulose esters, for example acetate silk.
In particular those dyes which, according to the present invention, are obtained by condensation of anthraquinones which are an amino or methylamino group in the 1-position and an NH in the 4-position. C6Hs-NH2 group, are obtainable with ethylene chlorohydrin, show the excellent affinity for cellulose esters,
which still exceeds that of the anthraquinone dyes used as starting materials.
The present patent relates to a process for the preparation of a dye of the Antrachirron series, which consists in that 1-methylamino-4- (p'-aminophenyl) aminoanthraquinone is heated with ethylene chlorohydrin in the presence of an acid-binding agent.
Examples: 1. 100 parts of 1-methylamino-4- (p'-aminophenyl) -aminoanthraehinone are added as a 10% paste in 500 parts of ethylene chlorohydrin, 35 parts of potassium acetate are added and the resultant thick porridge heated to boiling in an oil bath for half an hour. After stirring in water, the reaction product is filtered off with suction and washed. The dye obtained stains acetate silk in strong green tones.
2. 1000 parts of a 20% aqueous paste of 1-methylamino-4- (p'-aminophenyl) -aminoantbrachinon are heated with 1000 parts of 30% aqueous ethylene chlorohydrin and 80 parts of crystallized sodium acetate in an autoclave for 5 hours with stirring to 1200 and then poured the reaction mixture into water. It is then worked up as indicated in Example 1 and the same dye as in Example 1 is obtained.
