High sensitivity fuze for artillery and aviation projectiles. In patent no. 100498 and in additional patent no. 114618, various embodiments of a rocket for artillery and aircraft projectiles have been described and shown.
In the rockets which are the subject of the main and additional patents mentioned above, the applicant had endeavored to produce a sensitive and instantaneous functioning rocket comprising for this purpose a mobile crew containing the whole of the percussion mechanism (firing pin and primer) the striker or .element prior being integral with the envelope of said crew, while the primer was independent.
The operation of this rocket took place by driving the crew into the rocket body, in contact with an obstacle, even weakly resistant, this depression of the moving crew being made possible by the removal of a device which immobilized. said crew until they meet the obstacle. The firing is done by inertia, due to the continuation of the movement of the projectile and the primer, the latter coming into contact with the striker which, with the envelope of the crew, has received a relative displacement. relative to the projectile.
The device for immobilizing the crew before encountering the obstacle was, in a large number of embodiments described, constituted by a pin passing through the head of the crew.
The applicant has endeavored to reduce all together the weight of the mobile equipment and to make the immobilization device easier and less resistant, which at the same time allows a reduction in the mass and an increase in the sensitivity of the arti fice.
It is, in this order of ideas, that the mandator proposed, in the additional patent nc 114618, referred to above, the use of an extremely light crew, the immobilization device being constituted by a plastic material or elastic such as felt or cork on which rests the head of the crew. If this latter means makes it possible to produce an extraordinarily sensitive rocket, it nevertheless presents, as the applicant's experiments have made it possible to control it, certain drawbacks.
The immobilization until encountering the obstacle is not complete, since it -is carried out by a flexible support, it can happen that the crew accidentally, excessively, into the body rocket, while the pro jectile is in the bore of the barrel or near the muzzle.
Moreover, it can be seen that the mobile equipment being supported, by its head, on an elastic support which constitutes the only means of immobilization before impact, it is absolutely necessary that the head by which the crew s support has a suitable resistance.
It is also necessary that the tail of the team on which the primer rests resist the inertia of the primer at the start of the stroke, which implies, in total, the need to give to the envelope of the crew,, attached to the firing pin, a non-negligible resistance and weight.
The applicant had foreseen the. possibility of providing the crew with flexible support, by placing it on taut wires. But this device was recognized as incapable of properly immobilizing the crew - and of absorbing the inertia of the latter at the start of the blow as appropriate: and above all the wires, by breaking, did not dampen the inertia. of the primer, so that a violent relative recoil of the latter risked producing an explosion.
The present invention makes it possible to produce an extremely sensitive rocket of the type that is the subject of additional patent No. 114618, but with the elimination of the disadvantages which have just been recalled. The rocket according to the invention is characterized by a device for retaining against the reentry movements of the mobile crew at the start of the blow, this device being constituted by a perforated bottom thimble secured to the rocket body and placed with the bottom of the crew wrap on the primer recoil path.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of the upper part of a rocket body provided with the movable assembly comprising the elements of the firing mechanism (striker and primer) a die forming a damping member and support for the bottom of the team envelope being disposed entirely outside the latter; Figs. 2 and 3, are respectively a plan view and a section of a member for guiding and retaining the mobile assembly:
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a variant of the guiding and retaining member shown in FIGS. 2, and 3; Fig. 5 shows, in sectional elevation, the upper part of a variant of the rocket body in which the die is housed inside the crew casing -and forms a direct support for the primer, the pin associated with the die securing the latter, at the same time as the casing, on the rocket body.
In fig. 1 and 2 of the drawing, a designates the main element of a rocket body, in which is mounted the mobile assembly consisting of a casing b open at its front end - and crimped on the open head ë of a striker c, e @. The longitudinal walls; s of this envelope b are, as is known, pierced with windows b '.
In the example of FIG. 1, the crew casing b rests on a die, pierced with a central hole ci, and which is secured to the rocket body a, by a pin g. < / I> The rear base b2 of the envelope rests directly on the bottom of the die, and the primer f thus meets, on its retreat path, said base b2 and the die e itself resting on the pin g.
The mobile assembly is completed by a washer h comprising tabs 1c which, by folding, can be engaged through the windows b1, to form normally retaining members preventing any movement of the primer towards the outside. The washer is retained between the front edge of the rocket body and a removable cap a 'forming a front element of the rocket body screwed onto the rocket body proper a.
As we see, at rest, the crew leans on the die, so that at the start of the blow the inertia of the primer finds, as resistance against any untimely re-entry of the latter, not only the bottom. b2 of the envelope, but also the die and the pin g. It follows that it is no longer necessary to provide for the crew casing a resistance capable of retaining the primer on its own. On the other hand, as, in the fuse described, no support is necessary for the head of the crew and the expansion of the striker, this crew head just like the striker can be lightened to the extreme.
The rocket works exactly like the rockets described in. previous patents mentioned above. At the start of the blow, as we have just seen, any untimely reentry of the extremely light crew is prevented by the pinned thimble and the overall support provided to. the primer. When encountering an obstacle, even an extra ordinarily light one, the crew immediately has a tendency to reenter the rocket body and although it is itself of very low resistance, the impact exerted on the the head of said crew is transmitted to the looted thimble, by compression.
As the pin, for its part, is itself of low strength, its shear is ensured before any deformation of the crew casing, which works in compression, that is: in favorable conditions for very low thickness metal drawn and drawn.
The crew envelope moves, through the windows b ', on the tabs hl, -and the primer retains its position due to its independence from the crew -and its live force, so that a percussion takes place between the firing pin e and the primer, for the transmission of fire. Instead of a washer such as that of Figs. 2 and 3, one could use.
in the manner known from the prior patents recalled above, a washer h (FIG. 4), of small diameter, with two fins h2 which will then play the role of the tongues 1a 'of FIGS. 2 and 3.
In the example of fi-. 5, the die e es-1 placed at the bottom of the envelope (the crew b , so that the primer f rests on the bottom of said die, itself resting on the bottom b 2 of the casing The pin g passes through the longitudinal walls of the die and those of the casing all together. Here also, it is understood that the pinned die is located, together with the bottom b2 of the crew casing, on the untimely recoil path of the primer and constitutes a shock absorber, under the same conditions as in the previous example.
In the example of FIG. 1. it is possible, by unscrewing the removable cap a1, which, by its front part retains the washer h and at the same time forms a guide chamber for the firing pin head c ', remove the entire percussion device, that is to say that is to say the mobile equipment b, c, f, h-, which constitutes a great advantage, the whole of the percussion mechanism being able at any moment, before the use of the rocket, be visited and re-assembled, without the need to destroy any organ.
Therefore, in some respects this embodiment is preferable to that of the. fig. 5, however, the disassembly of the cap ai still allows the examination and inspection of the main elements of the percussion device.
